We investigated the surface structure and wetting behavior of octaneselenolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) formed in a 50 ${\mu}M$ ethanol solution according to immersion time, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and an automatic contact angle (CA) goniometer. Closely-packed, well-ordered alkanethiol SAMs would form as the immersion time increased; unexpectedly, however, we observed the structural transition of octaneselenolate SAMs from a molecular row phase with a long-range order to a disordered phase with a high density of vacancy islands (VIs). Molecularly resolved STM imaging revealed that the missing-row ordered phase of the SAMs could be assigned as a $(6{\times}{\surd}3)R30^{\circ}$ superlattice containing three molecules in the rectangular unit cell. In addition, CA measurements showed that the structural order and defect density of VIs are closely related to the wetting behaviors of octaneselenolate SAMs on gold. In this study, we clearly demonstrate that interactions between the headgroups and gold surfaces play an important role in determining the physical properties and surface structure of SAMs.

Crystallization has become the most popular technique for the separation of enantiomers since the Pasteur's discovery. To investigate mechanism of crystallization of chiral molecules, it is necessary to study self-assembled structures on two-dimensional surface. Here, we have studied two-dimensional self-assembled structures of an unnatural amino acid, (S)-${\beta}$-methyl naphthalen-1-${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (${\gamma}^2$-1-naphthylalanine) on Au(111) surface at 150 K using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). At initial stage, we found two chiral honeycomb structures which are counter-clockwise and clockwise configurations in one domain. The molecules are arranged around molecular vacancies, dark hole. By further increasing the amounts of adsorbed ${\gamma}^2$-1-naphthylalanine, a well-ordered square packed structure was observed. In addition, we found the other structure that molecules were trapped in the pore of the hexagonal molecular assembly.

The one of important requisites for fabricating molecular electronic device is the single crystal direction of bottom substrate nowadays. [1,2]. We obtain the optimum SAM result when the Au crystal is <111> structure for Self-Assembled molecular. To get the <111> crystal Au, we generally repeat heating and cooling course after evaporating Au [3]. However, we can fabricate <111> crystal Av thin film except post treatment because we simultaneously evaporate and anneal using Effusion Cell. In this paper, we study on thin film growth of <111> crystal Au as bottom electrode which is essential for Self-Assembled molecular by Effusion Cell and analyze crystal structure, thickness, surface conductivity and so on as each process condition.

The fine-tuned dendrons provide unique supramolecular self-assemblies in various environments such as in water, organic media, and solid-liquid interfaces. They form nanotubes, vesicles, thin films, columns, lamellar nanoribbons depending on the condition of self-assembly process. Unique characteristics of self-assembly of the amide dendrons are described. In addition, elucidation of the structural correlation between the building blocks and the assemblies, stabilization of assembled structure, and transformation of supramolecular assemblies by using external stimuli. Particular emphasis is placed on the formation of cyclodextrin-covered organic nanotubes derived from self-assembly of amide dendrons and their supramolecular transformation. Finally, unique biosensory characteristics of the self-assembled nanotubes will be discussed.

Nanostuctures such as nanodot and nanowire have been extensively studied as building blocks for nanoscale devices. However, the direct growth of the nanostuctures at the desired position is one of the most important requirements for realization of the practical devices with high integrity. Self-assembled nanotemplate is one of viable methods to produce highly-ordered nanostructures because it exhibits the highly ordered nanometer-sized pattern without resorting to lithography techniques. And selective epitaxial growth (SEG) can be a proper method for nanostructure fabrication because selective growth on the patterned openings obtained from nanotemplate can be a proper direction to achieve high level of control and reproducibility of nanostructucture fabrication. Especially, SiGe has led to the development of semiconductor devices in which the band structure is varied by the composition and strain distribution, and nanostructures of SiGe has represented new class of devices such nanowire metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors and photovoltaics. So, in this study, various shaped SiGe nanostructures were selectively grown on Si substrate through ultrahigh vacuum chemical vapor deposition (UHV-CVD) of SiGe on the hexagonally arranged Si openings obtained using nanotemplates. We adopted two types of nanotemplates in this study; anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) and diblock copolymer of PS-b-PMMA. Well ordered and various shaped nanostructure of SiGe, nanodots and nanowire, were fabricated on Si openings by combining SEG of SiGe to self-assembled nanotemplates. Nanostructure fabrication method adopted in this study will open up the easy way to produce the integrated nanoelectronic device arrays using the well ordered nano-building blocks obtained from the combination of SEG and self-assembled nanotemplates.

In this study, a poly (amino acid)s derivative grafted with retinoic acids, which could form self-assemblies in an aqueous solution, was successfully synthesized. The synthesized amphiphilic poly (amino acid)s were controlled with 5, 10, 30 mol% substitution of retinoic acid. Then, the amphiphilic poly (amino acid)s were self-assembled by inter/intra molecular stacking of retinoic acids in an aqueous solution. Also, the increasing the degree of substitution (DS) of retinoic acids decreased the size of self-assembled nanoparticles and induced structural transition to bilayer structure from spherical structure. The retinol was stably encapsulated into a core of self-assembled nanoparticle with 10 mol% of DS. This strategy to prepare the self-assemblies of amphiphilic polyaspartamide will serve to improve the efficiency of targeted delivery for a functional cosmetic with various biological modalities.

Using both experimentaland theoretical methods, we have investigated the structural and electronic properties of self-assembled two-dimensional organic molecule (hexaaza-triphenylene-hexacarbonitrile, HATCN), which is used as an efficient OLED hole injection material, on Au(111) surfaces. Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) measurements revealed that self-assembled linear and hexagonal porous structures are formed at atomic steps and terraces of Au(111), respectively. We also found that the hexagonal porous structure have chirality and forms only small (<1,000 nm2) phase-separated chiral domains that can easily change their chiral phase in subsequence STM images at 80 K. To explain these observations, we calculated the molecular-molecular and molecule-surface interaction energies by using first-principles density functional theory method. We found that the change of their chiral phase resulted from the competition between the two energies. These results have not only verified our experimental observations, but also revealed the delicate balance between different interactions that caused the self-assembed structures at the surface.
This cycloaddition of [70]fullerene with methyl azidoacetate in benzene under ultrasonic irradiated condition afforded the closed [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene derivative, which was unusual product of cycloaddition to the 5,6-junction of fullerene. Its structure was determined by FAB-MS, UV-vis, $^1H-$ and $^{13}C$-NMR spectral data. The closed [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene-functionalized gold nanoparticle films were self-assembled using the layer-by-layer method on the reactive of glass slides functionalized with 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane. The functionalized glass slides were alternately soaked in the solution containing closed the [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene and 4-aminothiophenoxide/hexanethiolate-protected gold nanoparticles. The closed [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene-functionalized gold nanoparticle films have grown up to 5 layers depending on the immersion time. The self-assembled nanoparticle multilayer films were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy showed that the surface plasmon band of gold at 527 nm gradually became more evident as successive layers were added to the films.
Self-assembled (SA) and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of arachidic acid on silver surfaces have been investigated by a reflection-absorption Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Arachidic acid was adsorbed on silver as carboxylate with its two oxygen atoms bound symmetrically to the surface. Although both the SA and LB monolayers consisted of fully extended trans zigzag carbon chains, a closer examination indicated that the SA monotayers should possess a more ordered crystalline structure than the LB monolayers. The infrared spectral data dictated that the extent of methyl group exposure at the air-film interface was greater in the SA monolayers than the LB monolayers, in agreement with the contact angle measurement. From a theoretical analysis, the alkyl chains in each monolayers seemed to be tilted away from the surface normal by less than $3.5^{\circ}$, but in opposite directions. Arachidic acid monolayers were concluded to have same structure as stearic acid monolayers.

Nanostructures, with a diversity of shapes, built on substrates have been developed within many research areas. Lithography is one powerful, but complex, technique to make structures at the nanometer scale, such as platinum nanowires for studying CO catalytic reactions [1], or aluminum nanodisks for studying the plasmon effect [2]. In this work, we approach a facile method to construct nanostructures using noble metals on a titania thin film by using self-assembled structures as a pattern. Here, a large-scale silica monolayer is transferred to the titania thin film substrates using a Langmuir-Blodgett trough, followed by the deposition of a thin transition metal layer. Owing to the hexagonal close-packed structure of the silica monolayer, we would obtain a metal nanostructure that includes separated metallic triangles (islands) after removing the patterning silica beads. This nanostructure can be employed to investigate the role of metal-oxide interfaces in CO catalytic reactions by changing the patterning silica particles with different sizes or by replacing the oxide support. The morphology and chemical composition of the structure can be characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, we modify these islands to a connected island structure by reducing the silica size of the patterning monolayer, which is utilized to generating hot electron flow based on the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of the metal nanostructures.
