Growth of a-Se:Te thick films for Hybrid X-ray sensor technology (Hybrid 형 X선 Sensor 기술을 위한 a-Se:Te 필름의 성장)

  • a-Se film is known as promising medical X-ray detector material but a-Se as dopanted Tellurium is not available in X-ray detectors. a-Se thick film was grown by vacuum thermal evaporator to $3{\mu}m$ thickness. The characteristics of thick films were analyzed by XRD, U-V Meter, and SEM measurements. Te composition is 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7g. This paper is fundmental data for phosphor layer's essential parameter that selenium have absorption wavelength along to various Te concentration rate.

The Antioxidative Effects of the Water-Soluble Extracts of Plants Used as Tea Materials (다류원료 식물류 물 추출물의 항산화 효과)

  • The water-soluble extracts of plants used as tea materials were investigated for their antioxidant activities and active components(total phenolics, ascorbate and selenium). Antioxidant activities of the plant extracts were determined by measuring the changes in both peroxide values(POV method) during storage(36 day, $55^{\circ}C$) and conductivity of soybean oil at $110^{\circ}C$(Rancimat method). Soybean oil without any additive was used as a control. Soybean oil treated with 0.02% BHT was used as a positive control. The test samples were prepared by mixing the plant extracts with soybean oil in 0.02% concentration by weight. The water-soluble extracts of lycii fructus(23 d), oolong tea(23 d), orange peel(23 d), citron(22 d), and apricot(22 d) showed longer induction periods, compared to control(21 d) and BHT(21 d) by POV method. Also water-soluble extracts of oolong tea(12 h), instant coffee(11 h), citron(10 h), cinnamomi cortex(10 h), schizandrae fructus(10 h), lycii fructus(10 h) and apricot(10 h) demonstrated longer induction periods, compared to control(8 h) and BHT(8 h) by Rancimat method. The contents of total phenolic compounds were observed to be high in water-soluble extracts of oolong tea, green tea, black tea, coffee, cinnamomi cortex, and cassiae semen. Ascorbate contents were found to be high in coffee, eucommiae cortex, black tea, ganoderma, cinnamomi cortex, persimmon leaf, chicory, green tea and oolong tea extracts. The selenium contents were not detected in all the extracts. The antioxidative effects of some plant extacts were seemed to be the combined effects of various antioxidant components such as phenolics and ascorbate.

Effect of Surfactant Addition on Se Absorption and Growth of Pak-choi and Leaf Lettuce in Hydroponics (수경 재배 시 계면 활성제 첨가가 상추와 청경채의 생육과 Se 흡수에 미치는 영향)

  • Surfactant polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-95) 1, 2, 4mg. $L^{-1}$ and calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) 5, 25, 50, 100mg. $L^{-1}$ were treated to the nutrient solution containing 1.0mg. $L^{-1}$ selenium (Se) to evaluate Se absorption effect using small DFT apparatus. The growth of leaf lettuce and pak-choi did not show unique significance by surfactant kinds and concentration in the tested range and physiological disorder. Vitamin C in leaves of two leafy vegetables was not significantly affected by surfactants also. Among major cations K content in pak-choi was highest in Se I+PVA-95 4mg. $L^{-1}$ treatment, and high in Se I+CLS 5 mg. $L^{-1}$ treatment. Ca content in two leafy vegetables showed increasing pattern by the two kinds of surfactants. Mg content was high in Se I+CLS 25mg. $L^{-1}$ treatment compared to control. Pak-choi absorbed Se about 10 times higher than leafy lettuce. Se content in leaves of two leafy vegetables increased by the treatment of two kinds of surfactants with the exception of CLS 100mg. $L^{-1}$ treatment.

Dietary Intakes, Serum Concentrations, and Urinary Excretions of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Se, Mo, and Cr of Korean Young Adult Women (일부 젊은 성인여자의 Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Se, Mo 및 Cr의 식사섭취, 혈청농도 및 소변배설)

  • This study was conducted to investigate dietary intakes, serum concentrations, and urinary excretions of iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), and chromium (Cr) of Korean young adult women. A total of 19 apparently healthy young adult women aged in their twenties or thirties participated voluntarily. One-tenth of all foods they consumed for 3 consecutive days were collected, all urine excreted for the same 3 days was gathered, and fasting venous blood was withdrawn for the trace mineral analyses. Of the food, blood, and urine samples, the contents of Zn, Cu, Mn, Se, Mo, and Cr were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and that of Fe by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) after wet digestion. The intake of Fe, $6.94{\pm}2.18mg$, did not meet the estimated average requirement (EAR) for Korean women aged 20-29 years old. On the contrary, the intakes of Zn ($9.35{\pm}4.95mg$), Cu ($1.18{\pm}0.26mg$), and Mn ($3.69{\pm}0.69mg$) were sufficient for each respective EAR. However, some of the subjects did not take the EAR for Zn. The Se intake, $41.93{\pm}9.28{\mu}g$, however, was almost similar to the EAR for Se. Although there are no references for Mo and Cr, the intakes of these minerals ($134.0{\pm}49.1\;and\;136.5{\pm}147.9{\mu}g$, respectively) seemed to be excessively sufficient. Serum Fe concentration, $88.7{\pm}36.8{\mu}g/dL$, seemed to be a little bit lower than its reference median but within its normal range. Approximately one-fourth of the subjects were in anemic determined by Hb and Hct and below the deficiency serum level of Fe, $60{\mu}g/dL$. In addition, serum Se concentration, $3.73{\pm}0.60{\mu}g/dL$, was also below its reference median and normal range. However, serum concentrations of Zn ($99.6{\pm}30.6{\mu}g/dL$) and Mo ($0.25{\pm}0.10{\mu}g/dL$) were fairly good compared to each reference median. The status of Cu could be determined as good although its serum concentration ($91.6{\pm}14.6{\mu}g/dL$) was slightly below its reference median. Since there are no decisive reference values, it was not easy to evaluate serum concentrations of Mn ($0.93{\pm}0.85{\mu}g/dL$) and Cr ($8.60{\pm}7.25{\mu}g/dL$). But Mn and Cr status seemed to be adequate. Urinary Fe excretion, $4.48{\pm}1.98{\mu}g/dL$, was pretty much lower than its reference and that of Se, $2.45{\pm}1.17{\mu}g/dL$, was also lower than its average. On the other hand, those of Zn ($42.95{\pm}20.47{\mu}g/dL$) and Cu ($5.68{\pm}1.50{\mu}g/dL$) were flirty good. In case of Mn, urinary excretion, $0.31{\pm}0.09{\mu}g/dL$, was much greater than its reference. Urinary excretions of Mo ($7.48{\pm}2.95{\mu}g/dL$) and Cr ($1.37{\pm}0.41{\mu}g/dL$) were very higher compared to each reference. The results of this study revealed that Korean young adult women were considerably poor in Fe status, a bit inadequate in Se status, partly inadequate in Zn status, and flirty good in Cu, Mn, Mo and Cr status. However, there was a problem of excessive intakes of Mo and Cr. It, therefore, should be concerned to increase the intakes of Fe, Se and Zn but to decrease Mo and Cr consumption for young adult women.

Changes of Blood Chemical Values and Vit. E Concentration in Calves Born from Hanwoo Dams Administrated Se and Vit. E at Late Pregnancying Periods (임신말기에 Se과 Vit. E 투여 후 태어난 한우 송아지의 혈액성분과 Vit. E 농도의 변화)

  • The objective of this study were to investigate the effects of Se and Vit. E administration on blood chemical values and Vit. E concentrations of serum in calves born from Hanwoo dams injected Se and Vit. E at late pregnancying periods. The effects of Se and Vit. E administration of blood chemical values in calves born from Hanwoo dams injected Se and Vit. E at the last month of pregnancying periods were examined. In albumin concentration of blood, the Vit. E 2000IU group were slightly higher than other groups and the cholesterol concentrations were also higher in Vit. E 15001u group than other groups. But, another components examined of blood chemical values were not significantly different in all experimental groups. The blood chemical values in calves born from Hanwoo dams administrated Se and Vit. E at two months before parturition were examined. However, there were not significantly different in all experimental groups in concentrations of albumin, cholesterol, BUN, creatinine, glucose, inorganic phosphorous, calcium, total protein and triglycerides. The concentrations of serum Vit. E in calves born from Hanwoo dams administrated Se and Vit. E at 30 and 15 days before parturition were examined. The concentrations of Vit. E in serum were higher in treatment groups than in control group(P>0.05). The concentrations of serum Vit. E in calves born from Hanwoo dams administrated Se and Vit. E at 60 days before parturition were examined, the concentrations of Vit. E in serum were slightly higher in groups administrated than in control group(P>0.05), but there were not significantly difference in all experimental groups.

Analysis of the General and Mineral Compositions of Kamut Powder and Effect of Kamut(Triticum turanicum Jakubz) Powder and Its Effect on Blood Parameters in Mice Fed a High-Fat Diet Supplement (카무트 분말가루의 영양성분 분석 및 고지방식이 섭취 시 카무트 분말가루의 첨가가 흰쥐 체내에서 혈중 대사 인자에 미치는 영향)

  • This study, analyzed the general and minerals composition of kamut and investigated its effect on blood components in mice fed a high fat diet. The content of each general component of kamut was as follows: $11.02{\pm}0.75%$ water, $13.16{\pm}1.28%$ crude protein, $1.85{\pm}0.19%$ crude fat, and $1.97{\pm}0.13%$ ash. The leptin level was the highest in the HF group($30.00{\pm}0.00ng/mL$) when compared to the control group. There was a significant decrease of $23.65{\pm}5.54ng/mL$ in the HFK group when compared to the HF group (p<0.05). The blood LDL-cholesterol concentration was the lowest in the control group at $10.00{\pm}2.00mg/dL$. The level was highest in the HF group at $28.00{\pm}0.00mg/dL$ when compared with the other groups (p<0.05). The aspartate transaminase (AST) level was significantly higher in the HFK group ($179.33{\pm}173.88U/L$) than in the control ($61.00{\pm}12.73U/L$) and HF groups ($132.00{\pm}0.00U/L$). According to the results of this study, the consumption of kamut lowers the blood LDL-cholesterol level more than the consumption of wheat flour. Additionally, kamut contains antioxidant substances such as selenium and zinc, which are thought to contribute to vascular health and thus aid in maintaining good health. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a variety of health foods using kamut; it should be used as a functional food for the maintenance of good health.

Trace metals and selenium in organs and tissues of the striped field mice, Apodemus agratius, collected from Korea (한국산 등줄쥐 각 조직에 분포하는 미량금속류 및 셀레늄에 관한 연구)

  • Nine trace metals (Zn, Fe, Al, Pb, Mn, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Cd) and Se concentrations were determined in organs and tissues(muscle, bone, kidney, liver and skin) of the striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius collected at Daejeo-dong, Pusan city and the Sorak Mt., Kangwon Province. All the trate elements were detected from all the mice examined. As for the metal concentrations in the mice from Daejeo-dong, Zn, Fe, Al, Mn, Ni and Cr were significantly higher than those in Sorak Mt.(p<0.05), suggesting that pesticides including Zn and factory wastes containing several metals might contaminated the environment of Daejeo-dong. As regards the element concentrations in each organ and tissue, Fe, Al, Pb, Mn, Cu, Cr and Cd concentrations were high in liver or kidney; Zn in skin and bone; Ni in bone, skin and kidney; and Se in muscle, liver and skin in all the mice examined. There were significant differences(p<0.05) between juveniles and adults in average concentration of metals(Zn, Fe, Pb, Mn, Ni, and Cd) in every organs and tissues of mice collected at Daejeo-dong. Much higher average levels of metals in juveniles indicate that considerable burdens fo metals might be transferred through the placenta. However, there were no significant differences between males and females, and between young and old adults in average metal concentrations, which suggests that the mice might accumulate the metals during their life time, although they might excrete the metals not only through reproductive activities, such as parturition, lactation and ejaculation of semen, but also through molting, judging from higher accumulating ratios of most metals in skin of adults than of juveniles.

Nutritional and antioxidant status by skin types among female adults

  • This study was performed to analyze the relationship among sebum hydration content of the skin and nutritional intake, serum antioxidant minerals and antioxidant enzymes, and lipid peroxide concentration in 50 female subjects in their 20s. The skin type was divided into Dry Skin, Mixed Skin, and Oily Skin, and the dry skin group was 14%, the mixed skin group was 56%, and the oily skin group was 30% of all subjects. The average age of the subjects was $20.54{\pm}1.43$ years and BMI was 20.66. The average sebum content in each group was in the order of T-zone>forehead>chin>cheek. In case of the T-zone, a significant difference between the dry skin group and the oily skin group was observed, suggesting that the area is most sensitive to sebum content by skin type. Significant differences were not observed in energy and nutrient intakes by skin type. Serum concentrations of antioxidant minerals such as copper, manganese, zinc and selenium were not significantly different among the groups, but the dry skin group tended to be higher than the oily skin group. Serum catalase was significantly higher in the oily skin group (P < 0.05), and MDA was significantly higher in the mixed skin group (P < 0.05). The hydration of the cheek and serum zinc showed a negative correlation, and the sebum content of the cheek and GPx showed a significant negative correlation. The hydration of the forehead and serum copper showed a significant negative correlation, and the hydration of the forehead and GPx showed a significant positive correlation. The hydration of the chin and serum SOD showed a significant positive correlation. With these results, it is considered that the basic condition of nutritional status can affect the skin health.

Hg(II) ion- Selective Electrodes with Neutral Carriers of Macrocycles (거대고리 중성 운반체를 갖는 Hg(II)이온 선택성 전극)

  • New thin-and diselena-crown ethers containing two suffer and selenium donor atoms have been prepared. And then, mercury ($Hg^{2+}$) ion-selective electrodes with PVC-plasticizer (STPB) based on some macrocycles as neutral carriers were also made. The electrochemical selectivities for various ions, and the effects for macrocycles, matrix of membranes, ratio of plasticizer to macrowcles, concentration and pH of test solution were investigated on the $Hg^{2+}$ ion-selective electrodes. The 1, 10-diselena-18-crown-6-PVC-STPB (sodium tetraphenylborate) exhibited good linear responses of ${28.2}\pm{0.6}$ decade-1 for $Hg^{2+}$ ion in the conientration ranges of $10^{-2}~10^{-6}$ M $Hg^{2+}$ ion. This electrode exhibited comparatively good selectivities for $Hg^{2+}$ ion in comparison with alkali and alkaline earth metal ions, some heavy metal ions and rare earth metal ion in the range of pH 2.5~6.0. In addition, this electrode was applied as a sensor in the titration of $Hg^{2+}$ ion with $1^-$ ion in water.

An Effective Antidandruff Agent-IPBC

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of IPBC(3-lodo-2-propynylbutylcarbamate) on dandruff caused by the anthropophilic fungus Malassezia furfur. The effects of IPBC on dandruff were examined by evaluating (a) the MIC value of IPBC using broth dilution method; (b) the remnant antimicrobial activity of IPBC containing shampoo on skin disc; (c) the antidandruff efficacy of 1.0 % IPBC containing shampoo in double blind clinical trial. To investigate the remnant antimicrobial activity of IPBC against Malassezia furfur, guinea pig-skin disc was washed with antidandruff shampoo and then the diameter of inhibition zone per disc was measured. For clinical trial, thirty healthy volunteers, aged 25-35, participated in 4 week study. At 0, 2, 4 weeks, examinations of scaling, itching on scalp were carried out. The MIC(Minimun Inhibition Concentration) values of IPBC range from 0.10 to 1.00${\mu}g/ml$ and it seems that IPBC is more effective in the MIC values than zinc pyrithione, selenium disulphide, piroctone olamine and comparable to ketoconazole, climbazole. When the remnant antimicrobial activity of IPBC shampoo on skin disc was determined, 0.5% IPBC shampoo and 2.0% Ketoconazole shampoo resulted in similar antimicrobial effect. In addition, 1.0%, 2.0% IPBC shampoo was more effective than 2.0% ketoconazole shampoo. After two and four-weeks of 1.0% IPBC shampoo treatment, there was significant reduction of scaling, itching in test group compared to control group. On the basis of these results, it can be concluded that 1.0% IPBC is more effective than 2.0% Ketoconazole in reducing dandruff. It seems that strong capacity of drug binding to the stratum corneum plays a role in its antidandruff effect since adsorption of active ingredients on scalp is very important factor in reducing dandruff.
