  • In this paper, a interdigital microstrip bandpass filter is designed. A interdigital microstrip bandpass filter has many advantages such as insertion return loss, lower return loss, higher frequency selectivity and smaller in size in comparison with the conventional coupled line filter. A interdigital microstrip bandpass filter consists of quasi TEM-mode strip line resonators between parallel ground plant. Each resonator element is a quarter wavelength long of the center frequency and is short circuited at one end and open circuited at the other end. In the filter design, Ensemble software is used. Experimental results show that the bandwidth of interdigital microstrip bandpass filter is 2.52GHz, insertion loss is -1.8dB and return loss is -17.0dB at 11.20Hz.

  • A microstrip band-pass filter using cross-coupled resonators is designed and studied experimentally. The cross-coupled microstrip hairpin resonator filters exhibit ripples in both passband and stopband. These ripples can improve both frequency selectivity and insertion loss. The cross-coupled filters are not only simple and compact in configuration, but also have great flexibility to form filters into a variety of size. In this paper, a microstrip band-pass filter using cross-coupled resonators is designed at the center frequency of 1.8GHz with bandwidth of 5.0% using Ensemble software. The experimental results show that the bandwidth is about 4.53% at 1.8GHz.

  • This paper introduces a 5GHz FIR filter low noise amplifier (LNA) based on a distributed amplifier and analyzes the its characteristics. The proposed FIR filter-LNA has the MA(moving average) filter characteristic which improves the frequency selectivity of the amplifier. Proto-type circuits with FR4 and ${\varepsilon}_r=10.2$ PCB have been realized and simulated using ADS (Advanced Design System). The simulation results verified that the designed LNA had a gain of about 10dB and the frequency characteristic of the MA FIR filter. It is expected that the proposed FIR filter LNA can be applicable to the various applications using an amplifier and a filter in RF systems.

  • In OFDMA or SC-FDMA systems one can generate time varying channels or frequency selective channels using multiple transmit antennas to achieve diversity without special space-time processing at the receivers. While low channel coding rate needs to be used for distributed-allocation SC-FDMA systems with a phase rolling technique to produce time fluctuation, relatively high channel coding rate can be used when cyclic delay diversity is used to increase frequency selectivity assuming quasi-static channel. On the other hand, for block-hopping SC-FDMA systems there is no significant difference between two diversity techniques in terms of optimal channel coding rates.

  • In very shallow water acoustic communication channel, underwater acoustic (UWA) communication signal is observed as frequency selective fading signal due to time-varying multipath. This induces a time and frequency dependent inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and degrades the UWA system performance. There is no study about how the performances of the error correction codes are related to a multipath fading statistics in very shallow water. In this study, the characteristics of very shallow water multipath fading channel is analyzed and the performances of two different forward error correction (FEC) codes are compared. The convolution code (CC) and Reed-Solomon (RS) code are adopted. Sea experimental results show that RS code is better choice than CC in frequency selective channel with fading.

  • Lasers for optical broadband communication systems should have excellent frequency selectivity and modal stability. DFB(Distributed Feedback) lasers have low lasing frequency shift during high speed current modulation. In this paper, I have developed a simulation software and analysed threshold gain and lasing frequency of a lasing mode in longitudinal direction of an 1.55um DFB laser with two mirrors and without anti-reflection coatings, that have both an index- and gain-gratings. The grating phase on a left mirror face is fixed as π/2 and the grating phase on a right mirror face is varied. As the phases of the index and gain gratings on the right mirror facet are π and 0, κL should be in the range of 2~6 in order to enhance the frequency stability. In order to reduce the threshold current of a lasing mode, κL should be greater than 8, regardless of the grating phases on the mirror faces.

  • This Electromagnetic metal piece detection sensor, having high sensitivity even under high humidity and dust density, using LVDT was investigated. Metal detection characteristics using phase detection method, for 3 frequencies covering ELF and LF band, were experimentally measured. It was found that the sensitivity for metal and animal food, in which metal piece was included, was exponentially increased as frequency increased. Reducing cutoff frequency of LPF after PD was found to be effective to proportionally increase sensitivity. Also the sensitivity of metal piece detection was enhanced by optimizing BPF bandwidth and SNR. Metal piece detection limit using available ferrous test samples was found to be 0.7mm diameter from the experiment using 50kHz, in ELF band, which was known to have better selectivity to animal food. is an example of ABSTRACT format.

  • Methods used for exploring marine resources and spaces include positioning a probe under water and then recalling it after a specified time. Hydro-acoustic Releasers are commonly used for positioning and retrieving of such exploration equipment. The most important factor in this kind of system is the reliability for recalling the instruments. The frequently used ultrasonic signal detection method can detect ultrasonic signals using a fixed comparator, but because of increased rates of errors due to outside interferences, information is repetitively acquired. This study presents an effective ultrasonic signal detection algorithm using the characteristics of a resonance and adaptive comparator Combined with the FSK+ASK modulator. As a result, approximately 8.8% of ultrasonic wave communication errors caused by background noise and transmission losses were reduced for effectively detecting ultrasonic waves. Furthermore, the resonance circuit's quality factor was enhanced (Q = 120 to 160). As such, the bias voltage of the transistor (Vb= 3.3 to 6.8V) was increased thereby enhancing the frequency's selectivity.

  • We present a mathematical method for calculation of transmission zero locations, determining a filtering characteristics of two-port systems. By adjusting element values based on the zero locations, the frequency-selectivity is characterized. The characteristic polynomial of ladder networks in externally-loaded feed-forward systems is considered by adopting chain matrices for subsystems. This method can be extended to other types of lumped systems with cross-coupled sections. We find out the zeros by solving characteristics polynomials of closed-form expressions in terms of Laplace impedances of elements. The pairs of complex zeros are shown to be solely from the cross-coupled portion of the system.

  • In this research project, two aspects of small signal stability are studied: improvement in Hessenberg method to compute the dominant electromechanical oscillation modes and siting FACTS devices to damp the low frequency oscillation. Fourier transform of transient stability simulation results identifies the frequencies of the dominant oscillation modes accurately. Inverse transformation of the state matrix with complex shift equal to the angular speed determined by Fourier transform enhances the ability of Hessenberg method to compute the dominant modes with good selectivity and small size of Hessenberg matrix. Any specified convergence tolerance is achieved using the iterative scheme of Hessenberg method. Siting FACTS devices such as SVC, STACOM, TCSC, TCPR and UPFC has been studied using the eigen-sensitivity theory of augmented matrix. Application results of the improved Hessenberg method and eigen-sensitivity to New England 10-machine 39-bus and KEPCO systems are presented.
