One of the characteristics of the hearing impaired is that their frequency selectivity is poorer than that of the normal hearing. To compensate this, formant enhancement algorithms and spectral contrast enhancement algorithms have been developed. However in some cases, these algorithms fail to improve the frequency selectivity of the hearing impaired. One of the reasons is the acoustic masking among enhanced formants. In this study, we tried to enhance the formants based on the individual masking characteristic of each subject. The masking characteristic used in this study was minimum level difference (MLD) between the first formant to the second formant while acoustic masking was occurred. If the level difference between the two formants in each frame is larger than the MLD, the gain of the first formant was decreased to reduce the acoustic masking that occurred among formants. As a result of the speech discrimination test, using formant enhanced speeches, speech discrimination score (SDS) of the speeches having differently enhanced formants was significantly superior to SDS of the speeches having equally enhanced formants. It means that suppression of the acoustic masking among formants improve frequency selectivity of the hearing impaired.

The mesh selectivity of drum net traps for Buccinum opisoplectum Dall caught in the eastern sea of Korea was described. Several experiments were conducted between July 2003 and March 2004 and the data obtained from the experiment was fitted by SELECT (Share Each Length class's Catch Total) model with unequal fishing and sampling efforts. The selection curve was determined to be 'estimated fishing efficiency' by model deviance rather than AIC. However the fishing efficiency between 20mm and 35mm mesh size did not seem to be different. The $L_{50}$ lengths of the selectivity for the 55mm and 75mm mesh size were 65.4mm and 96.0mm, respectively.

A simple colorimetric and fluorescent anion sensor 1 based on salicylimine showed a high selectivity and sensitivity for detection of cyanide in aqueous solution. The receptor 1 showed high selectivity toward $CN^-$ ions in a 1:1 stoichiometric manner, which induces a fast color change from colorless to orange and a dramatic enhancement in fluorescence intensity selectively for cyanide anions over other anions. Such selectivity resulted from the nucleophilic addition of $CN^-$ to the carbon atom of an electron-deficient imine group. The sensitivity of the fluorescence-based assay (0.06 ${\mu}M$) is below the 1.9 ${\mu}M$ suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the maximum allowable cyanide concentration in drinking water, capable of being a practical system for the monitoring of $CN^-$ concentrations in aqueous samples.

Hydraulic transport of fines up to the surface of flotation cell was supposed to be a mechanism of fines fractionation through the froth-flotation. Efficient fractionation of fines means efficient skimming out of flotation rejects as much as possible with least long fiber loss. The selectivity of fines fractionation was found to be mainly affected by long fibers flocculation degree in this study. Lack of sufficient flocculation of long fibers could lead to extensive loss of long fibers. It was also found that higher flotation flux caused higher flotation reject as well as the increase of long fiber loss, but did not affect the fine content ratio in the flotation reject. We controlled the flotation flux and the stock consistency, and chose a cationic polymer to maximize the flocculation of long fibers and to increase the amount of flotation reject. The highest efficiency of fines fractionation was obtained at 1.3% of stock consistency and at 100L/min of flotation flux in our experimental set up. The cationaic polymer we chose was found to be very effective in fiber flocculation and flotation froth stabilization. New definitions of fractionation efficiency were introduced in this study to compare the results more clearly.
The use of ionic liquids as reaction media can confer many advantages upon catalytic reactions over reactions in organic solvents. In ionic liquids, catalysts having polar or ionic character can easily be immobilized without additional structural modification and thus the ionic solutions containing the catalyst can easily be separated from the reagents and reaction products, and then, be reused. More interestingly, switching from an organic solvent to an ionic liquid often results in a significant improvement in catalytic performance (e.g., rate acceleration, (enantio)selectivity improvement and an increase in catalyst stability). In this review, some recent interesting results which can nicely demonstrate these positive “ionic liquid effect” on catalysis are discussed.
The Sn $O_2$-based gas sensors can detect inflammable and toxic gases of low concentration by the modulation of surface resistance, but they lack in selectivity on the whole. To give selectivity to the Sn $O_2$-based gas sensors, studies on the sensing mechanism, selective gas sensing materials and signal processing techniques are demanded. Ethanol (C$_2$$H_{5}$OH) and acetonitrile ($CH_3$CN) were confirmed to undergo catalytic oxidation on Sn $O_2$ by gas chromatography. PdCl$_2$-doped Sn $O_2$ showed excellent sensitivity to ethanol and acetonitrile, while La$_2$$O_3$-doped Sn $O_2$ showed excellent sensitivity to ethanol, but poor sensitivity to acetonitrile. Using these two sensors and pattern recognition, the selectivity to acetonitrile is greatly enhanced. The minimum detection level of acetonitrile was 15 ppm in air and 20 to 100 ppm when exposed to interfering gases together with acetonitrile.
Improvement of the selectivity of nonenzymatic glucose based on mesoporous platinum ($H_1$-ePt) by using A.C. impedance is reported. The idea of the present work is based on the novel effect of the mesoporous electrode that the apparent exchange current due to glucose oxidation remarkably grows although the reaction kinetics on the surface is still sluggish. It is expected that the enlarged apparent exchange current on the mesoporous electrode can raise the sensitivity of admittance in A.C. impedance to glucose concentration. At a low frequency, A.C. impedance could become more powerful. The admittance at 0.01 Hz is even more sensitive to glucose than to ascorbic acid while amperometry exhibits the inverse order of sensitivity. This is the unique behavior that is neither observed by A.C. impedance on flat platinum electrode nor obtained by amperometry. The study shows how the combination of A.C. impedance and nano-structured surface can be applied to the detection of sluggish reaction such as electrochemical oxidation of glucose.
Ultrafiltration has been performed to separate proteins, which is almost unique method of protein separation in mass production scale. The problems of its low selectivity and decline in permeation flux resulted from gel formation on the membrane surface have been greatly improved by an applied electric field across the membrane. The applied electric field promoted or hindered the permeation of protein through membranes depending on the electric charge of protein molecules in aqueous solution. With the effects of electric field, the permeation flux and the selectivity of the ultrafiltration could be improved significantly.
