Experimental Study on the Velocity Structure of 2-D Density Current Induced by Selective Withdrawal (선택취수에 의한 2차원 밀도류의 흐름특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • A series of laboratory experiments has been performed to investigate the flow characteristics of 2-dimensional density currents induced by selective withdrawal, which is commonly suggested as a measure for removal of high turbid water from reservoirs. Saltwater has been used to simulate the density stratification over depth and PIV(Particel Image Velocimetry) for observing the velocity structure. Experimental conditions have been established according to Richardson number, which is the dimensionless number that expresses the ratio of potential to kinetic energy. From the experiments, the patterns of longitudinal decay of centerline axial velocity induced by the withdrawal have been distinguished from other experimental cases. The rate of longitudinal decay increase as the Richardson number increases. The variations of volumetric and momentum flux along the longitudinal axis have also shown to be dependent on Richardson number.

  • Nitrate-selective ion exchange resin which have bulky tertiary amine as functional group have been synthesized by the reaction of chloromethylated polystyrene-divinylbenzene copolymer and the corresponding tertiary amine [$NR_3=NE_{t3} 1, N{(C_2 H_4 H_3)}_32]$in ethanol, while commercial resin has $NMe_3$ as functional group. The fundamental properties such as bulk density, water content, appearance index, exchange capacity, effective size, uniformity coefficient of synthesized anion exchange resin (1) have been measured. The ion exchange resin (1) and (2) exhibited the better selectivity for nitrate than sulfate in both batch and continuous column experiments.

  • The exhaust gas from electric power stations, incinerators and industrial boilers contains considerable amount of harmful nitric oxide which causes air pollution. Selective catalytic reduction system with ammonia as a reductant(NH$_{3}$ SCR) have been applied to remove NOx since 1970. it is widely accepted that the NH$_{3}$ SCR process is the best method for the removal of NOx. In this paper the design of SCR reactor based on the NOx displacement is considered and the design program of SCR reactor is developed. The newly developed design program for de-NOx system maybe used in practice.

Laser Direct Patterning of Carbon Nanotube Film

  • The SWCNTs network are formed on various plastic substrates such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polyimide (PI) and soda lime glass using roll-to-roll printing and spray process. Selective patterning of carbon nanotubes film on transparent substrates was performed using a femtosecond laser. This process has many advantages because it is performed without chemicals and is easily applied to large-area patterning. It could also control the transparency and conductivity of CNT film by selective removal of CNTs. Furthermore, selective cutting of carbon nanotube using a femtosecond laser does not cause any phase change in the CNTs, as usually shown in focused ion beam irradiation of the CNTs. The patterned SWCNT films on transparent substrate can be used electrode layer for touch panels of flexible or flat panel display instead indium tin oxide (ITO) film.

  • Fine dust in air pollutants is recognized as one of the most serious social environmental problems. Most of the NOx is generated in a combustion process such as that of a coal-fired power plant, and therefore efficient elimination of the NOx from the coal-fired power plants is needed. This study investigates the removal efficiency of using $TiO_2$, a photocatalyst, to remove NOx by Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). To evaluate the NOx removal efficiency, $TiO_2$ catalyst and phosphate binder were mixed on the surface of the $Al_2O_3$ substrate with the exothermic agent, and the substrate was heat-treated. The NOx removal efficiency of the catalysts was evaluated according to the temperature, and XRD, SEM, TG-DTA and BET analyzes were performed to investigate the physicochemical properties of the catalysts. NOx removal efficiency was 58.7%~65.9% at 20min, 63.7~66.0% at 30min with temperature change according to time($250^{\circ}C{\sim}500^{\circ}C$). The $TiO_2$ used in the SCR for NOx removal is judged to have the most efficient removal efficiency at $300^{\circ}C$.

Application of Ferrate (VI) for Selective Removal of Cyanide from Plated Wastewater (도금폐수 중 시안(CN)의 선택적 제거를 위한 Ferrate (VI) 적용)

  • The treatment of plated wastewater is subject to various and complex processes depending on the pH, heavy metal, and cyanide content of the wastewater. Alkali chlorine treatment using NaOCl is commonly used for cyanide treatment. However, if ammonia and cyanide are present simultaneously, NaOCl is consumed excessively to treat ammonia. To solve this problem, this study investigated 1) the consumption of NaOCl according to ammonia concentration in the alkaline chlorine method and 2) whether ferrate (VI) could selectively treat the cyanide. Experiments using simulated wastewater showed that the higher the ammonia concentration, the lower the cyanide removal rate, and the linear increase in NaOCl consumption according to the ammonia concentration. Removal of cyanide using ferrate (VI) confirmed the removal of cyanide regardless of ammonia concentration. Moreover, the removal rate of ammonia was low, so it was confirmed that the ferrate (VI) selectively eliminated the cyanide. The cyanide removal efficiency of ferrate (VI) was higher with lower pH and showed more than 99% regardless of the ferrate (VI) injection amount. The actual application to plated wastewater showed a high removal ratio of over 99% when the input mole ratio of ferrate (VI) and cyanide was 1:1, consistent with the molarity of the stoichiometry reaction method, which selectively removes cyanide from actual wastewater containing ammonia and other pollutants like the result of simulated wastewater.

  • 2-Epideoxymannojirimycin 1 and (2R,3R,4R,5R)-3,4,5-trihydroxypipecolic acid 2 were prepared starting from D-glucosamic acid as a chiral educt. Key transformations were selective removal of the terminal isopropylidene group and intramolecular cyclization by SN2 reaction.
