  • The characteristics of selective oxidation prior to hot-dip galvanizing with the annealing atmosphere dew point and chemical composition in dual-phase steels and their effect on the inhibition layer formation relevant to coating adhesion have been studied using a combination of electron microscopic and surface analytical techniques. The annealed and also galvanized samples of 3 kinds of Si/Mn ratios with varied amounts of Si addition were prepared by galvanizing simulator. The dew point was controlled at soaking temperature $800^{\circ}C$ in 15%$H_2$ -85%$N_2$ atmosphere. It was shown that good adhesion factors were mainly uniformity of oxide particle distribution of low number density and low Si/Mn ratio prior to hot-dip galvanizing. Their effect was the greatly reduced coating bare spots and the formation of uniform inhibition layer leading to good adhesion of Zn overlay. The mechanism of good adhesion is suggested by two processes: the formation of inhibition layer on the oxide free surface uncovered with no $SiO_2$-containing particles in particular, and the inhibition layer bridging of oxide particles. The growth of inhibition layer was enhanced markedly by the delayed reaction of Fe and Al with the increase of Si/Mn ratio.

  • The high capacity audio watermarking algorithms are facing a main challenge in satisfying the robustness against attacks especially on de-synchronization attacks. In this paper, a robust and a high capacity algorithm is proposed using segment selection, Stationary Wavelet Transform (SWT) and the Quantization Index Modulation (QIM) techniques along with new synchronization mechanism. The proposed algorithm provides enhanced trade-off between robustness, imperceptibility, and capacity. The achieved watermarking improves the reliability of the available watermarking methods and shows high robustness towards signal processing (manipulating) attacks especially the de-synchronization attacks such as cropping, jittering, and zero inserting attacks. For imperceptibility evaluation, high signal to noise ratio values of above 22 dB has been achieved. Also subjective test with volunteer listeners shows that the proposed method has high imperceptibility with Subjective Difference Grade (SDG) of 4.76. Meanwhile, high rational capacity up to 176.4 bps is also achieved.

  • The Sb-doped $SnO_2$ nanowire network sensors were prepared by thermal evaporation of the mixtures between tin and antimony powders. Pure $SnO_2$ nanowire networks showed high sensor resistance in air ($99M{\Omega}$), similar gas responses to 4 diffferent gases (5 ppm $C_2H_5OH$, CO, $H_2$, and trimethylamine), and very sluggish recovery speed (90% recovery time > 800 s). In contrast, 2 wt% Sb-doped $SnO_2$ showed the selective detection toward $C_2H_5OH$ and trimethylamine, relatively low resistance ($176k{\Omega}$) for facile measurement, and ultrafast recovery speed (90% recovery times: 6 - 18 s). The change of gas sensing charactersitics by Sb doping was discussed in relation to gas sensing mechanism.

  • The present study was aimed to explore pathophysiological implications of nitric oxide in the development of left and right ventricular hypertrophy. To induce selective left and right ventricular hypertrophy, rats were made two-kidney, one clip (2K1C) hypertensive and treated with monocrotaline (MCT), respectively. Six weeks later, the hearts were taken and their ventricular tissue mRNA and protein expression of endothelial constitutive isoform of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) were determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis, respectively. In 2K1C hypertensive rats, the expression of NOS mRNA was increased in parallel with its proteins in the left ventricle, but not in the right ventricle. In MCT-treated rats, the expression of NOS mRNA and proteins were proportionally increased in the right ventricle, but not in the left ventricle. These results suggest that the expression of NOS is specifically increased in association with the ventricular hypertrophy, which may be a mechanism counteracting the hypertrophy.

  • Handling paging mechanism at the IP layer (i.e., IP paging) makes it possible to support heterogeneous wireless access technologies, providing energy-saving and reduced location registration signaling overhead over IP-based mobile networks. However, IP paging may rather cause adverse effects under active communication environments because of significant paging signaling overhead and frequent paging delay. Therefore, in order to solve these problems, a cost-effective IP paging scheme is proposed in this paper, which enables a mobile node to perform selective registration and paging based on its profile information. Numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme has apparent potential to mitigate considerable paging signaling overhead and frequent paging delay in IP-based hierarchical mobile networks.

  • Ethanol extract of Gastrodia elata fermented with Lactobacillus brevis was highly effective on the duration of pentobarbital hypnosis in mice. Pretreatment of mice with ethanol extract of the fermented Gastrodia elata (200 mg/kg, p.o.) prolonged markedly the duration of pentobarbital sleeping time and reduced the sleep latency. The mechanism of the extract of the fermented Gastrodia elata was investigated to inhibit the binding of $^3H$-Flumazenil, a selective benzodiazepine receptor antagonist, to benzodiazepine receptor of mice cortices. $IC_{50}$ value from displacement of $^3H$-Flumazenil binding was 62 ${\mu}g/mL$ at the treatment of the fermented Gastrodia elata. Therefore, these finding, such as increase of sleeping time and reduction of sleep latency, was examined by elevated concentration of GABA and parishin C, which were increased by Lactobacillus brevis.

  • True aneurysm of the brachial artery is a rare disease entity. The mechanism of aneurysm formation is considered to be compression of the arterial wall, producing contusion of the media and subsequent weakness of the wall and fusiform dilatation. It can be caused by arteriosclerotic, congenital, and metabolic disorders, and can be associated with diseases such as Kawasaki's disease. Doppler ultrasonography, computed tomography, arteriography, and selective upper extremity angiography may be performed for establishing the diagnosis of aneurysm. The best therapeutic option is operative repair, and it should be performed without any delay, in order to prevent upper extremity ischemic or thrombotic sequelae. Here, we report a case of recurrent brachial artery aneurysm with review of the literature.

  • Ability to transport extracted carriers from NQDs is essential for the development of most NQD based applications. Strategies to facilitate carrier transport while preserving NQDs' optical characteristics include: 1) Fabricating neat films of NQDs with modified surfaces either by adapting series of ligands with certain limitations or by applying physical processes such as heat annealing 2) Coupling of NQDs to one-dimensional nanostructures such as single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) or various types of nanowires. NQD-nanowire hybrid nanostructures are expected to facilitate selective wavelength absorption, charge transfer to 1-D nanostructures, and efficient carrier transport. Even with the vast interests in using NQD-SWNT hybrid materials in optoelectric applications, still, no reports so far have clearly elucidated the optoelectric behavior when they were assembled on the FET mainly because the complexity involving in both components in their preparation and characterization. We have monitored the optical properties of both components (NQDs, SWNTs) from the synthesis, to the assembly, and to the device. More importantly, by using pyridine molecules as a linker to non-covalently attach NQDs to SWNTs, we were able to assemble NQDs on SWNTs with precise density control without harming their electronic structures. Furthermore, by measuring electrical signals from the fabricated aligned SWNTs-FET using dielectrophoresis (DEP), we were able to elucidate the charge transfer mechanism.

  • Ion-exchange technology is one of the best for removing nitrate from drinking water. However, problems related to the disposal of spent brine from regeneration of exhausted resins must be overcome so that ion exchange can be applied more widely and economically, especially in small communities. In this background, a combined bio-regeneration and ion-exchange system was operated in order to prove that nitrate-laden resins could be bio-regenerated through direct contact with denitrifying bacteria. A nitrate-selective A520E resin was successfully regenerated by denitrifying bacteria. The bio-regeneration efficiency of nitrate-laden resins increased with the amount of flow passed through the ion-exchange column. When the fully exhausted resin was bio-regenerated for 5 days at the flowrate of 30 BV/hr and MLSS concentration of $125{\pm}25mg/L$, 97.5% of ion-exchange capacity was recovered. Measurement of nitrate concentrations in the column effluents also revealed that less than 5% of nitrate was eluted from the resin during 5 days of bio-regeneration. This result indicates that the main mechanism of bio-regeneration is the direct reduction of nitrate by denitrifying bacteria on the resin.

  • Fluoxetine (FLX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant, exhibits various other mechanisms of action in numerous cell types and has been shown to induce cell death in cancer cells, paving the way for its potential use in cancer therapy. The aim of this study was to determine the off-target effects of the anti-depressant drug FLX, on the human ovarian granulosa tumor COV434 cells stimulated by forskolin (FSK), by measuring the real-time kinetics of intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP), ATP level, cytoplasmic calcium ([Ca2+]cyt) and survival of COV434 cells. We show that incubating COV434 cells with FLX (between 0.6 and 10 μM) induces a decrease in intracellular cAMP response to FSK, a drop in ATP content and stimulates cytoplasmic Ca2+ accumulation in COV434 cells. Only the highest concentrations of FLX (5-10 μM) diminished cell viability. The present report is the first to identify an action mechanism of FLX in human tumor ovarian cells COV434 cells and thus opening the way to potential use of fluoxetine as a complementary tool, in granulosa tumor treatments.
