Synonymous sites are generally considered to be functionally neutral. However, there are recent contradictory findings suggesting that synonymous alleles might have functional roles in various molecular aspects. For instance, a recent study demonstrated that synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms have a similar effect size as nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms in human disease association studies. Researchers have recognized synonymous codon usage bias (SCUB) in the genomes of almost all species and have investigated whether SCUB is due to random nucleotide compositional bias or to natural selection of any functional exposure generated by synonymous mutations. One of the most prominent observations on the non-neutrality of synonymous codons is the correlation between SCUB and levels of gene expression, such that highly expressed genes tend to have a higher preference toward so-called optimal codons than lowly expressed genes. In relation, it is known that amounts of cognate tRNAs that bind to optimal codons are significantly higher than the amounts of cognate tRNAs that bind to non-optimal codons in genomes. In the present paper, we review various functions that synonymous codons might have other than regulating expression levels.
The original RRT is iteratively expanded by applying control inputs that drive the system slightly toward randomly-selected states, as opposed to requiring point-to-point convergence, as in the probabilistic roadmap approach. It is generally known that the performance of RRTs can be improved depending on the selection of the metrics in choosing the nearest vertex and bias techniques in choosing random states. We designed a path planning algorithm based on the RRT method for a remote-controlled mobile robot. First, we considered a bias technique that is goal-biased Gaussian random distribution along the command directions. Secondly, we selected the metric based on a weighted Euclidean distance of random states and a weighted distance from the goal region. It can save the effort to explore the unnecessary regions and help the mobile robot to find a feasible trajectory as fast as possible. Finally, the constraints of the actuator should be considered to apply the algorithm to physical mobile robots, so we select control inputs distributed with commanded inputs and constrained by the maximum rate of input change instead of random inputs. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is significantly more efficient for planning than a basic RRT planner. It reduces the computational time needed to find a feasible trajectory and can be practically implemented in a remote-controlled mobile robot.
The propensity score matching method is a statistical method used to reduce selection bias in observational studies and to show effects similar to random allocation. There are many observational studies in dentistry research, and differences in baseline covariates between the control and case groups affect the outcome. In order to reduce the bias due to confounding variables, the propensity scores are used by equating groups based on the baseline covariates. This method is effective, especially when there are many covariates or the sample size is small. In this paper, the propensity score matching method was explained in a simple way with a dental example by using R software. This simulated data were obtained from one of retrospective study. The control group and the case group were matched according to the propensity score and compared before and after treatment. The propensity score matching method could be an alternative to compensate for the disadvantage of the observation study by reducing the bias based on the covariates with the propensity score.
Objectives : The study was done to verify the relation between early-onset androgenetic alopecia(AGA) and metabolic syndrome(MetS). Methods : Data were collected through electronic database including KoreaMed, National Assembly Library, KMBASE, NDSL, KCI, KERIS, Google Scholar, Pubmed, Cochrane CENTRAL and EBSCO MEDLINE. A total of 13 case-control studies related to the MetS of early-onset alopecia patients were used for the systematic review and meta-analysis. Risk of bias of included studies were assessed by RoBANS tool. RevMan5.3, CMA3 were used for the meta-analysis. Results : In 13 evaluated articles, most frequent bias was the participant selection bias that was found in 10 articles. Significant association between early-onset AGA and MetS was found in 10(76.9%) out of 13 articles in the systematic review. In meta-analysis, early-onset male AGA was associated with increased risk of metabolic syndrome(OR: 3.73, 95% CI:2.49 -5.61). Conclusions : AGA, particularly early -onset male AGA, is significantly associated with MetS. Therefore all patients with early onset male AGA should be suggested to take preventive treatment to reduce the risk of MetS and various problems associated with it.
Objective: Falling is one of main accident to facilitate the physical injuries in order adults. The purpose of the systematic review was to determine the effects of postural balance training whether the recovery of falls in elderly with normal physical function or not throughout summing the selected studies quantitatively. Design: A systematic review Methods: MEDLINE and other four databases were searched up to April 20, 2021 and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating postural balance approaches on fall risks in elderly. The researched studies excluded the double studies, titles and abstract, and finally full-reported study. The selected RCTs studies were extracted characteristics of the studies and summary of results based on PICOS-SD (population, intervention, comparison, outcomes, and setting- study design) model to synthesize the papers qualitatively. Results: The review involved 22 RCT reports with 4,847 community older adults aged 65 years or over. Nineteen of the selected RCT studies reported dual or multimodal exercises show the beneficial effect for older adults compared to one-type treatment or no intervention. All of selected showed low risk in the selection, attrition, and reporting bias. However, detection bias showed low risk at 75% records of the involved RCTs and performance bias was low risk at only three records. Conclusions: The results of the systematic review propose that a standardized therapeutic approach and the intensity are needed for improving risk of falls in older adults.
In this work, analytical bias arising from the gas chromatographic determination of sulfur compounds was evaluated by the application of direct loop injection method to the GC/PFPD detection of four sulfur compounds including H$_{2}$S, CH$_{3}$SH, DMS, and DMDS. For the proper evaluation of analytical uncertainties involved in GC calibration, we employed two comparative techniques of calibration at fxed concentration injection (CFCI) vs calibration at fixed volume injection (CFVI) method. The results of our study indicate that CFCI method exhibits very poor sensitivity due to the matrix effect with varying injection volumes. On the other hand, as CFVI method overcomes such limitation, it can be used to obtain very accurate quantification of S compounds at their high concentration levels above a few to a few tens ppb.

Basu et al. (1998) proposed a new density-based estimator, called the minimum density power divergence estimator (MDPDE), which avoid the use of nonparametric density estimation and associated complication such as bandwidth selection. Woodward et al. (1995) examined the minimum Hellinger distance estimator (MHDE), proposed by Beran (1977), in the case of estimation of the mixture proportion in the mixture of two normals. In this article, we introduce the MDPDE for a mixture proportion, and show that both the MDPDE and the MHDE have the same asymptotic distribution at a model. Simulation study identifies some cases where the MHDE is consistently better than the MDPDE in terms of bias.
LIDAH data often include systematic errors, which should be removed by a calibration process. This paper proposes a robust approach to calibrating LIDAR data using natural surfaces as reference data. The uniqueness of this approach is to employ a sophisticated selection scheme so that only a portion of LIDAR points can be used to estimate the bias parameters generating the systematic errors. This approach was applied to calibrating simulated LIDAR data. The results show that the approach can successfully recover the bias parameters and calibrate the data with acceptable RMS errors. Particularly, the parameter recovery model can be easily extended to register image data with LIDAR data.

The main goal of a case-control study is to learn the association between various risk factors and a primary outcome (e.g., disease status). Particularly recently, it is also quite common to perform secondary analyses of the case-control data in order to understand certain associations between the risk factors of the primary outcome. It has been repeatedly documented with case-control data, association studies of the risk factors that ignore the case-control sampling scheme can produce highly biased estimates of the population effects. In this article, we review the issues of the naive secondary analyses that do not account for the biased sampling scheme, and also the various methods that have been proposed to account for the case-control ascertainment. We additionally compare the results of many of the discussed methods in an example examining the association of a particular genetic variant with smoking behavior, where the data were obtained from a lung cancer case-control study.
Although it has been confirmed that excessive body fat increases health risks and all-cause mortality, several epidemiological studies have reported that overweight or obesity in patients with chronic diseases and in older adults is advantageous with respect to mortality. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the biological basis of this obesity paradox. The marked heterogeneity of findings observed across studies and the possibility of systematic errors in these studies have cast doubt on the actual existence of the obesity paradox. However, the obesity paradox questioned the validity of body mass index as the best indicator for obesity in terms of predicting its comorbidities and urges clinicians to focus more on changes in body composition and related metabolic derangements, rather than body weight per se.
