  • To improve the seismic performance of suspended ceiling structures, various vibration-damping devices have been developed. However, the devices made of metals have a limit in that they cause large deformation and seriously damages the exterior of the suspended ceiling structure from the wall. As a results, their strengthening effect of the suspended ceiling structure was minimal. Thus, this study employed a spring and vibration-proof rubber effectively controlled vibrations without increasing horizontal seismic loads on the ceiling to enhance the seismic resistance of suspended ceiling structures. The objective of the study is to examine the dynamic properties of a seismic damping-isolation unit (SDI) with various details developed. The developed SDI was composed of a spring, embossed rubbers, and prestressed bolts, which were the main factors enhancing the damping effect. The shaking table tests were performed on eight SDI specimens produced with the number of layers of embossed rubber (ns), presence or absence of a spring, prestressed force magnitude introduced in bolts (fps), and mass weight (Wm) as the main parameters. To identify the enhancement effect of the SDI, the dynamic properties of the control specimen with a conventional hanger bolt were compared to those of the SDI specimens. The SDI specimens were effective in reducing the maximum acceleration (Ac max), acceleration amplification factor (αp), relative displacement (δR), and increasing the damping ratio (ξ) when compared to the control specimen. The Ac max, αp, and δR of the SDI specimens with two rubbers, spring, and fps of 0.1fby, where fby is the yielding strength of the screw bolt were 57.8%, 58.0%, and 61.9% lower than those of the conventional hanger bolt specimens, respectively, resulting in the highest ξ (=0.127). In addition, the αp of the SDI specimens was 50.8% lower than those specified in ASCE 7 and FEMA 356. Consequently, to accurately estimate the αp of the SDI specimens, a simple model was proposed based on the functions of fps, stiffness constant of the spring (K), Wm, and ns.

  • This paper introduces a novel, rigorous, and efficient probabilistic methodology for the performance-based optimal design (PBOD) of semi-active tuned mass damper (SATMD) for seismically excited nonlinear structures. The proposed methodology is consistent with the modern performance-based earthquake engineering framework and aims to design reliable control systems. To this end, an optimization problem has been defined which considers the parameters of control systems as design variables and minimization of the probability of exceeding a targeted structural performance level during the lifetime as an objective function with a constraint on the failure probability of stroke length damage state associated with mass damper mechanism. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is illustrated through a numerical example of performance analysis of an eight-story nonlinear shear building frame with hysteretic bilinear behavior. The SATMD with variable stiffness and damping have been designed separately with different mass ratios. Their performance has been compared with that of uncontrolled structure and the structure controlled with passive TMD in terms of probabilistic demand curves, response hazard curves, fragility curves, and exceedance probability of performance levels during the lifetime. Numerical results show the effectiveness, simplicity, and reliability of the proposed PBOD method in designing SATMD with variable stiffness and damping for the nonlinear frames where they have reduced the exceedance probability of the structure up to 49% and 44%, respectively.

  • Monitoring the performance and estimating the remaining useful life of aging civil infrastructure in the United States has been identified as a major objective in the civil engineering community. Structural health monitoring has emerged as a central tool to fulfill this objective. This paper presents a review of the major structural monitoring programs that have been recently implemented in the United States, focusing on the integrity and performance assessment of large-scale structural systems. Applications where response data from a monitoring program have been used to detect and correct structural deficiencies are highlighted. These applications include (but are not limited to): i) Post-earthquake damage assessment of buildings and bridges; ii) Monitoring of cables vibration in cable-stayed bridges; iii) Evaluation of the effectiveness of technologies for retrofit and seismic protection, such as base isolation systems; and iv) Structural damage assessment of bridges after impact loads resulting from ship collisions. These and many other applications show that a structural health monitoring program is a powerful tool for structural damage and condition assessment, that can be used as part of a comprehensive decision-making process about possible actions that can be undertaken in a large-scale civil infrastructure system after potentially damaging events.

  • A shared tuned mass damper (STMD) was proposed in previous research for reduction of dynamic responses of the adjacent buildings subjected to earthquake loads. A single STMD can provide similar control performance in comparison with two traditional TMDs. In previous research, a passive damper was used to connect the STMD with adjacent buildings. In this study, a smart magnetorheological (MR) damper was used instead of a passive damper to compose an adaptive smart STMD (ASTMD). Control performance of the ASTMD was investigated by numerical analyses. For this purpose, two 8-story buildings were used as example structures. Multi-input multi-output (MIMO) fuzzy logic controller (FLC) was used to control the command voltages sent to two MR dampers. The MIMO FLC was optimized by a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Numerical analyses showed that the ASTMD can effectively control dynamic responses of adjacent buildings subjected to earthquake excitations in comparison with a passive STMD.

  • In the last decades, valuable results have been reported regarding conventional passive, active, semi-active, and hybrid structural control systems on two-dimensional and a few three-dimensional shear buildings. In this research, using a three-dimensional finite element model of high-rise concrete structures, designed by performance based plastic design method, it was attempted to construct a relatively close to reality model of concrete structures equipped with Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) by considering the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI), torsion effect, hysteresis behavior and cracking effect of concrete. In contrast to previous studies which have focused mainly on linearly designed structures, in this study, using performance-based plastic design (PBPD) design approach, nonlinear behavior of the structures was considered from the beginning of the design stage. Inelastic time history analysis on a detailed model of twenty-story concrete structure was performed under a far-field ground motion record set. The seismic responses of the structure by considering SSI effect are studied by eight main objective functions that are related to the performance of the structure, containing: lateral displacement, acceleration, inter-story drift, plastic energy dissipation, shear force, number of plastic hinges, local plastic energy and rotation of plastic hinges. The tuning problem of TMD based on tuned mass spectra is set by considering five of the eight previously described functions. Results reveal that the structural damage distribution range is retracted and inter-story drift distribution in height of the structure is more uniform. It is strongly suggested to consider the effect of SSI in structural design and analysis.

  • R/C columns, one of the main structural members of reinforced concrete structures, usually sustain the axial forces of combined dead loads and live loads. When subjected to lateral loads, however, they are repeatedly subjected to bending moment, shearing forces and brittle failure such as shear failure can occur. This failure mode is not desirable and extra reinforcement is usually needed to induce a ductile failure. The design equation which is used to evaluate the maximum shear strength of a R/C column is still unsatisfactory. The objective of this study was, therefore, to evaluate the hysteretic strengthening effect and the maximum shear strength of R/C columns strengthened using carbon fibers on the seismic performance of the R/C columns under anti-symmetrical by acting moment. According to this study, it may be suggested that the shear of the strengthened R/C column were adequate to induce ductile failures.

  • The primary objective of this study is to make a contribution to the construction of 40~60 story R/C high rise building by developing the reinforcing details which can improve the seismic performance of high-strength (f'c=700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, fy=4000, 8000kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) R/C beam-column joints. And the purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of load history on the total energy dissipation capacity of reinforced concrete flexural members. The reinforcing details which can make beam plastic hinging zones moved and spreaded from the column face is proposed to insure the ductile behavior of high-strength RC beam-column joints. The intermediate reinforcement which is horizontally anchored by interlinking each intermediate reinforcements is proposed and tested to examine the mechanical performance of proposed details. Main variables are the shape of the intermediate reinforcements and yield strength of rebars. From the test results, the newly proposed intermediate reinforcement details can move and spread the beam plastic hinging zone about 1.0d from the column face.

  • The compression toe of structural wall is designed to resist the axial compression and shear force caused by wind or earthquake. The performance of shear wall used in tall building is highly influenced by combined shear and axial force. For this reason, it is possible to result in local brittle failure because of concentrated damage in the potential plastic hinge region under severe earthquake. Thus, it is necessary to establish the lateral confinement details at the plastic hinge of shear wall so that shear wall can behave a ductile manner, The objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of L-shaped walls with different confinement details. For this purpose, three wall specimens were tested experimentally and also analyzed using Nonlinear FEM package.

  • Structural walls have been favored for the design of reinforced concrete buildings in seismic zone areas because they provide an efficient bracing system and offer great potential for lateral load resistance and drift control. Loads on structures due to earthquakes are not unlikely to reach, if not exceed, the design load levels. Hence, structural damage to walls is inevitable, and it is necessary to repair this damaged walls. Yet, information on repair method and data related to the strength and deformation characteristics of repaired walls is limited. In this study, specimens which have their aspect ratios of about 1 to 3 will be repaired. For the repairing the damaged walls, new concrete and new reinforcing bar are replaced with cracked concrete and the buckled reinforcing bar, respectively. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the repaired structural walls in the capacity of strength, stiffness, and maximum deformation comparing with the undamaged walls.
