  • Post-earthquake damages investigation in past and recent earthquakes has illustrated that the ground motion spatial variation plays an important role in the structural response of long span bridges. For the structural control of seismic-induced vibrations of cable-stayed bridges, it is extremely important to include the effects of the ground motion spatial variation in the analysis for design of an effective control system. The feasibility and efficiency of different vibration control strategies for the cable-stayed bridge under multiple support excitations have been examined to enhance a structure's ability to withstand earthquake excitations. Comparison of the response due to non-uniform input ground motion with that due to uniform input demonstrates the importance of accounting for spatial variability of excitations. The performance of the optimized designed control systems for uniform input excitations gets worse dramatically over almost all of the evaluation criteria under multiple-support excitations.

  • The Theory of Plastic Mechanism Control (TPMC) has been recently extended to the case of Eccentrically Braced Frames (EBFs) with inverted Y-scheme, i.e., EBFs with vertical links. In this paper a further validation of the design procedure, based on TPMC, is provided by means of Incremental Dynamic Analyses (IDA) pointing out the fulfilment of the design goal, i.e., the development of a pattern of yielding consistent with the collapse mechanism of global type where all the links are yielded and all the beams are yielded at their ends while all the columns and the diagonal braces remain in elastic range with the only exception of the base sections of first storey columns. In particular, a study case is designed according to both TPMC and Eurocode 8 provisions and the corresponding seismic performances are investigated by both push-over and IDA analyses. The results show the different performances obtained in terms of pattern of yielding, maximum interstorey drift, link plastic rotation demand and sharing of the seismic base shear between the moment-resisting part and the bracing part of the structural system. The seismic performance improvement obtained by means of TPMC, compared to Eurocode 8 provisions, is pointed out.

  • In this paper, a new system of seismic isolation for buildings - called suspended columns - is introduced. In this method, the building columns are placed on the hinged cradle seats instead of direct connection to the foundation. In this system, each of the columns is put on a seat hung from its surrounding area by a number of cables, for which cavities are created inside the foundation around the columns. Inside these cavities, the tensile cables are hung. Because of the flexibility of the cables, the suspended seats vibrate during an earthquake and as a result, there is less acceleration in the structure than the foundation. A Matlab code was written to analyze and investigate the response of the system against the earthquake excitations. The findings showed that if this system is used in a building, it results in a significant reduction in the acceleration applied to the structure. A shear key system was used to control the structure for service and lateral weak loads. Moreover, the effect of vertical acceleration on the seismic behavior of the system was also investigated. Effect of the earthquake characteristic period on the system performance was studied and the optimum length of the suspension cables for a variety of the period ranges was suggested. In addition, measures have been taken for long-term functioning of the system and some practical feasibility features were also discussed. Finally, the advantages and limitations of the system were discussed and compared with the other common methods of seismic isolation.

  • When an unexpected excessive seismic load is applied to the base isolation of arch structure, the seismic displacement of the base isolation may be very large beyond the limit displacement of base isolation. These excessive displacement of the base isolation causes a large displacement in the upper structure and large displacement of upper structure causes structural damage. Therefore, in order to limit the seismic displacement response of the base isolation, it is necessary to install an additional device such as an anti-uplift device to the base isolation. In this study, the installation direction of the base isolation and the control performance of the base isolation installed anti-uplift device were investigated. The installation direction of the base isolation of the arch structure is determined by considering the horizontal and vertical reaction forces of the arch structure. In addition, the separation distance of the anti-uplift device is determined in consideration of the design displacement of the base isolation and the displacement of the arch structure.

  • Collapse of bridges in recent earthquakes demonstrates the need to deepen the understanding of the behaviour of these structures against seismic actions. This paper presents a highly detailed numerical model of an actual bridge subjected to extreme seismic action which results in its collapse. Normally, nonlinear numerical models have high difficulties to achieve convergence when reinforced concrete is intended to be represented. The main objective of this work is to determine the efficiency of different passive control strategies to prevent the structural collapse of an existing bridge. Metallic dampers and seismic isolation by decoupling the mass were evaluated. The response is evaluated not only in terms of reduction of displacements, but also in increasing of shear force and axial force in key elements, which can be a negative characteristic of the systems studied. It can be concluded that the use of a metallic damper significantly reduces the horizontal displacements and ensures the integrity of the structure from extreme seismic actions. Moreover, the isolation of the deck, which in principle seems to be the most effective solution to protect existing bridges, proves inadequate for the case analysed due to its dynamic characteristics and its particular geometry and an unpredictable type of axial pounding in the columns. This unexpected effect on the isolation system would have been impossible to identify with simplified models.

  • The semi-active TLCD system is investigated for control of responses of 3D irregular buildings under seismic excitations. The TLCD system is a special type of TMD system providing a performance similar to a TMD system but offers a number of practical advantages over the traditional TMD system. The equations of motion for the combined building and TLCD system are derived for multistory building structures with rigid floors and plan and elevation irregularities. Simulation results for control of two multistory moment-resisting space structures with vertical and plan irregularities show clearly that the semi-active TLCD control system reduces the responses of 3D irregular buildings subjected to earthquake ground motions efficiently.

  • This paper describes a large tuned mass damper (TMD) developed as an effective seismic control device for an existing highrise building. To realize this system, two challenges needed to be overcome. One was how to support a huge mass that has to move in any direction, and the second was how to control mass displacement that reaches up to two meters. A simple pendulum mechanism with strong wires was adopted to solve the first problem. As a solution to the important latter problem, we developed a high-function oil damper with a unique hydraulic circuit. When the mass velocity reaches a certain value, which was predetermined by considering the permissible displacement, the damper automatically and drastically increases its damping coefficient and limits the mass velocity. This velocity limit function can effectively and stably control the mass displacement without any external power. This paper first examines the requirements of the TMD using a simple model and clarifies the constitution of the actual TMD system. Then the seismic upgrading project of an existing high-rise building is outlined, and the developed TMD system and the results of performance tests are described. Finally, control effects for design earthquakes are demonstrated through response analyses and construction progress is introduced.
