  • Recently, GRS (Geosynthetic Retaining Segmental) wall has been widely used as a method to replace concrete retaining wall because of its excellent structural stability and economic efficiency. It has been variously applied for foundation, slope, road as well as retaining wall. The GRS wall system, however, has a weak point that is serious crack of wall due to stress concentration at curved part of it. In this study, therefore, behaviour of GRS wall according to shape of it, shich has convex and concave, are analysed and compared using Finite Element analysis as the fundamental study for design optimization. Results including lateral deflection, settlements of ground surface and wall obtained from 2D FE analysis are compared between straight and curved parts from 3D FE analysis.

  • Technical improvement and the growth of the Internet environment make the market segmental of the manufacturing industry. These social trends have had an effect on the housing market, and the housing market changed from the supplier-oriented to the consumer-oriented. In recent years the occupants' needs for the apartment is diversified and complicated. But the existing mass housing supply method has many problems. It couldn't satisfy the dwellers' various needs and couldn't reflect overall expected life span either. In order to realize the sustainable building & environment, the research for the open housing system is actively performed. Finally the custom-built apartment which imported the concept of the open housing is constructed. But after running the custom-built apartment, several problems are revealed. Therefore the purpose of this study is to analyze the problems and then suggest the improving methods for a custom-built apartment.

  • As survival rate of patients in osteosarcoma improves, both patients and surgeons are increasingly interested in long-term functional outcome. For resection and reconstruction of tumors on either side of knee joint, if feasible, conservation of normal joint apparatus seems preferable method over use of tumor prosthesis. However, we should not trade off the sound surgical margin with expected functional gain. We report one case of osteosarcoma who was treated by wide, intercalary resection and reconstruction with autogenous pasteurized bone but, showed local recurrence at 44 months postoperatively.

  • Stereotactic radiofrequency dorsal root ganglionotomy can be very useful procedures for the treatment of pain emanating from the lumbar segmental nerves. This procedure is reserved for patients who have failed conservative interventional treatments and in whom open surgical intervention is not an option. The advantages of the radiofrequency lesion method are presented, excellent control of the lesion process using temperature monitoring to quantify the lesion size, prevent boiling, and to produce differential destruction of neural tissue. The afferent fibers in the ventral root which are spared by dorsal rhizotomy but nerve fibers with their cells in the ganglion from either dorsal or ventral root can be destructed with stereotactic radiofrequency ganglionotomy. This technique is performed using a 100 mm cannula with a 5 mm active tip. Repeated lateral fluoroscopic view should be taken to make sure that cannlua still resides within the superior, dorsal quadrant or the foramen. With the cannula in this position, electrostimulation is performed and good paresthesia on the leg should be noted with 0.3 and 0.5 volt at 50 Hz stimulation. At 2Hz stimulation distinct dissociation between motor and sensory should be shown. Percutaneous lumbar ganglionotomy have carried out under local anesthesia on inpatient basis in 6 patients. A series of 5 patients with metastatic cancer pain and a patient with compression fracture have been relieved of pain without serious complications.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary fat intake, anthropometric data, blood lipids, C-reactive protein, and adiponectin in Korean male college students. Forty-eight subjects were divided into 2 groups based on dietary fat intake: UERF (under 30% of energy ratio for fat source), AERF (above 30% of energy ratio for fat souce). We collected dietary intake data using 24-hour dietary recall for 3 days. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were measured by using standard methods. Segmental body composition analysis was carried out using an 8-electrode multifrequency bioelectrical impedance method of body fat estimation. There was no significant difference in anthropometric data and serum lipid profile between UERF and AERF group. Serum C-reactive protein level was significantly higher in the AERF group compared to the UERF group. Although there was no significant difference in serum adiponectin level between UERF and AERF groups, subjects had lower adiponectin levels. Correlation data show that serum adiponectin level was positively correlated with vegetable intake (p < 0.05). In addition, dietary fat intake had a positive correlation with meat (p < 0.01), whereas a negative correlation with grain (p < 0.01), vegetables (p < 0.05), and fish (p < 0.05). These results suggest that the increased fat intake of non-obese Korean male college students is associated with their increased serum C-reactive protein concentration. Therefore, proper guidelines on fat intake and nutrition education are necessary for the prevention and management of metabolic syndromes.

  • In this paper, we propose a new class of segmentation technique for feature extraction based on the statistical and regional classification at each vertical or horizontal line of digital image data. Data is processed and clustered at each line, different from the point or space process. They are designed to segment gray-scale sectional images using a horizontal and vertical line process due to their statistical and property differences, and to extract the feature. The techniques presented here show efficient results in case of the gray level overlap and not having threshold image. Such images are also not easy to be segmented by the global or local threshold methods. Line pixels inform us the sectionable data, and can be set according to cluster quality due to the differences of histogram and statistical data. The total segmentation on line clusters can be obtained by adaptive extension onto the horizontal axis. Each processed region has its own pixel value, resulting in feature extraction. The advantage and effectiveness of the line-cluster approach are both shown theoretically and demonstrated through the region-segmental carotid artery medical image processing.

  • Since the insertion of self expandable metalic stent[SEMS has became popular method for hollow organ stenosis, many attempts for further apply the stent to airway stenosis as an simple procedure has been made, but intrabronchial migration of stent or occurrence of inflammatory granuloma around stent develop occasionally and sometimes it worsen bronchial stenosis further more. This report describes 2 case of surgically treated bronchial restenosis in whom intrabronchial stent were applied for release of bronchial stenosis. Our surgical option was pneumonectomy and bronchoplasty with sleeve right middle and upper lobectomy respectively. During the operation we found the SEMSs were tightly impacted in restenotic bronchial lumen with overgrowth of granulation tissues. The bronchial obstructions occupied more than 90% of lumens in both cases, and needed much complicated procedure to be relieved. Therefore, even though the insertion of SEMS remains as a prcedure determined by the physician`s preference, it has to be considered prudently that the use of SEMS can cause severe restenosis and the surgeon has more difficulties in performing segmental resection of restenotic bronchus in patient with SEMS previously inserted. Throughout these experiences we can conclude that the insertion of SEMS must be performed only in very selected cases of bronchial stenosis.

  • There exist many construction joints in segmentally constructed bridge girders. It is required coupling of tendons or overlapping of tendons to introduce continuous prestress through several spans of bridges. Even though tendon coupling method is easier to use in practice, some cracking problems around construction joints have been reported and complicated stress states around construction joints in PSC girders is not clearly investigated. The purpose of this paper is to investigate in detail the complicated longitudinal stress distributions around the construction joints in prestressed concrete girders with tendon couplers. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and a series of specimens have been tested to identify the effects of tendon coupling and segmental construction of bridge sections. The present study indicates that the longitudinal stress distributions of PSC girders with tendon couplers are quite different from those of PSC girders without tendon couplers. The longitudinal compressive stresses introduced by prestressing are greatly reduced around coupled joints according to tendon coupling ratios.

  • Objective : Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is often complicated by subsidence, pseudoarthrosis, kyphosis, and graft donor site morbidities. To decrease the occurrence of these complications, various types of cages have been developed. We designed this retrospective study to analyze and compare the efficacy and outcomes of ACDF using double cylindrical cages (DCC) (BK Medical, Seoul, Korea) versus an anterior cervical plating system with autogenous iliac crest grafts. Methods : Forty-eight patients were treated with autograft and plating (plate group), and 48 with DCC group from October 2007 to October 2011. We analyzed construct length, cervical lordotic curvarture, the thickness of the prevertebral soft tissue, segmental instability, and clinical outcomes. Results : There were no significant differences between the two groups with regard to the decrease in construct length or cervical lodortic curvature at the 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups. The prevertebral soft tissue was thinner in the DCC group than the plate group immediately after surgery and at the 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups. The difference in interspinous distance on flexion-extension was shorter in the plate group than the DCC group at the 3- and 6-month follow-ups. However, there was no significant difference in this distance between the two groups at the 12-month follow-up. Conclusion : A double cylindrical cage is a good alternative for fusion in patients with cervical degenerative diseases; the surgical method is relatively simple, allows good synostosis, has less associated prevertebral soft tissue swelling, and complications associated with autografting can be avoided.

  • Ameloblastoma treatment varies based on the clinical, histopathologic, and radiographic characteristics. Aggressive surgical treatments, such as marginal or segmental resection, have traditionally been implemented, but some conservative surgical methods are also being introduced, including decompression, enucleation, or curettage. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of applying these conservative surgical treatments to ameloblastoma and to analyze the prognosis of the procedures and their healing aspects. Among all patients who visited our clinic (Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital at Gangdong) from 2009 to 2017, three who had undergone conservative surgery were recruited. One of these three patients underwent both excision of the lesion and an iliac bone graft during the same procedure. In the other two patients, due to the size of the lesion, decompression was performed to reduce the size of the lesion, and then conservative surgical treatments followed. As shown in the cases of this study, patients were only treated with conservative surgical methods, such as decompression or enucleation. During the follow-up period, there were no recurrences. In conclusion, the use of conservative surgical treatment in ameloblastoma can be a reliable, safe, and successful method.
