  • In parallel flow condition, to estimate the stability of the extended embankment constructed on a permeable foundation ground, a laboratory model test was performed due to extended materials and water level increasing velocity of a flood period. A laboratory model test was peformed for different permeability coefficients ($K_1=2.0{\times}10^{-5}cm/sec,\;K_2=1.5{\times}10^{-4}cm/sec,\;K_3=2.3{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$) using seepage. The fluctuation of water level occurring to an extended embankment was analyzed by laboratory model tests as vary the increasing velocity of water level with 0.6cm/min, 1.2cm/min, 2.4cm/min respectively. In analysis results, the increase of water level into embankment occurs rapidly because seepage water moving along with a permeable soil flow into embankment. The larger the permeability coefficient of an extended part is the longer initial seepage distance, and the exit point of downstream slope is gradually increased and then shows unstable seepage behavior as occurring partial collapse. As the increasing velocity of water level increase, the initial seepage line is formed low, and the discharge increases. Therefore, the embankment extended by a lower permeable soil than existing embankment shows stable seepage behavior because an existing embankment plays a role as filter for an extended part.

  • If water flows through a narrow passage into a medium that keeps the equilibrium of temperature, it causes small temperature difference and makes a temperature anomaly. The seepage or leakage often observed at old dams is a representative example of bringing about a temperature anomaly. Therefore, temperature measurements have been regarded as one of excellent methods that can detect the situation of seepage or leakage. However, because existing temperature measurement methods are based on a single sensor, the application of the method to the whole structure is nearly not possible in technical and economical phases. This paper introduces a temperature monitoring system using a thermal sensor cable that is comprised of addressable thermal sensors connected in parallel at many positions within a single cable. Through various laboratory and field experiments, it has been proved that the temperature monitoring technique can give an useful information about permeability of a medium or connectivity of fractures which have been regarded as difficult problems.

  • In this research, stainless steel and heat-shrinkage tube were used for new TDR sensing line to solve the problems of ordinary TDR system. The new TDR line improved the sensitivity of water content and endurance, and reduced the data noise. The saturation degree test and acryl model test were done by revised TDR sensor. From the results, without additional data filtering and quantitative analysis, the raw data were separated into 3 zones; saturated, unsaturated and dried zones easily. In addition, the revised TDR sensor was installed in large-scale embankment model to perform the seepage test. The raw data of the model tests showed the distributed seepage behaviors and separated zones clearly, which were almost the same tendencies as the lab test results.

  • This study analyzed pore water pressure, seepage and leakage quantity, height of seepage and critical hydraulic gradient in order to suggest the seepage characteristics of agricultural reservoir embankment considering filter interval. The seepage characteristics of a deteriorated reservoir embankments were conducted according to the horizontal filter intervals range using three- dimensional finite element analysis. The wider the horizontal filter interval, the higher the pore water pressure increased, and the pore water pressure ratio in the center of the core has a greater effect than the base part. The seepage and leakage quantity appeared largely in the two-dimensional analysis conditions (case 1), where the filter was constructed totally in the longitudinal direction of the embankment, the wider the horizontal filter interval was gradually reduced. The reasonable filter intervals to yield efficient seepage characteristics were within 30 m for the pore water pressure of the core and the height of the seepage line. The stability of the filter installation was able to evaluate the stability of the piping by the critical hydraulic gradient method. The deteriorated reservoir with no filters or decreased functionality can significantly reduce the possibility of piping by simply installing a filter on the downstream slope. In the future, the deteriorated reservoir embankment should be checked for the reservoir remodeling because the core and filter functions have been lost or decreased significantly. In the case of a new installation, the seepage characteristic behavior due to the core and filter changes should be applied to the field after obtaining a reasonable horizontal filter interval that satisfies the safety factor by a three-dimensional analysis.

  • Sea dyke construction is simply defined that the cutting procedure of sea water flow. Sea dyke construction is more difficult than in-land construction because it’s placed on deep seabed and exposed sea wave attack. Especially, the final closure of sea dyke is most dangerous due to the fast velocity of tidal flow. The final closure section is consisted with vast rubble and heavy stone gabion, therefore the discharge velocity at land side of final close section is irregularly and sometime occur the fast discharge velocity. In this study, the seepage model test performed to evaluate seepage behavior with tidal variation of final closure and continuous sea dyke section such as discharge velocity, hydraulic gradient, and phreatic line. Based on the seepage model test results, the maximum discharge velocity of final closure section is 1.7m/sec. Also the local discharge velocity increment and vortex is occurred.

  • The stability of an embankment Impounding a water reservoir is highly depend upon the location of seepage line with the embankment. To evaluate the accurate safety factor of an embankment, it is important to illustrate the seepage phenomenon. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid change (drawdown) of reservoir level Seepage forces in embankments are easily determined if frictional forces are expressed in relation to hydraulic gradient Ⅰ. If a piezometer is inserted into a body of embankment, the level to which free water rises is a measure of the energy at that point. From model test result, it is possible to calculate safety factors of earth embankment. To assure the validity of this research, tests were conducted with numerical experimental models. And the experiment models were constructed with slopes of 1:1.0, 1:1.5, 1:2.0, 1:2.5. Analysis of experimental results, seepage force was analyzed according to downstream time, internal friction angle and cohesion, respectively.

  • Temperature variation according to space and time on the inner parts of engineering constructions(e.g.: dam, slope) can be a basic information for diagnosing their safety problem. In general, as constructions become superannuated, structural deformation(e.g.: cracks, defects) could be occurred by various factors. Seepage or leakage of water through these cracks or defects in old dams will directly cause temperature anomaly. Groundwater level also can be easily observed by abrupt change of temperature on the level. This study shows that the position of seepage or leakage in dam body can be detected by multi-channel temperature monitoring using thermal line sensor. For this, diverse temperature monitoring experiments for a leakage physical model were performed in the laboratory. In field application of an old dam, temperature variations for water depth and for inner parts of boreholes located at downstream slope were measured. Temperature monitoring results for a long time at the bottom of downstream slope of the dam showed the possibility that temperature monitoring can provide the synthetic information about flowing path and quantity of seepage of leakage in dam body.

  • In this study, the seepage behavior has been analyzed, which is the most important in determining the stability of the embankment. Large-scale embankment of weathered granite has been installed and TDR (time domain reflectory) sensors were used to detect the seepage lines. The TDR graphs could be separated into 3 sections, which are initial, unsaturated and saturated zones. TDR sensor can detect seepage line more easily than point sensor without analysis. Comparisons of the results of numerical analyses and the TDR sensors showed differences at water level rising condition, and then Comparisons of the results generally showed good agreement at another condition.

  • In this study we analyzed the seepage characteristics of meandering section of rivers commonly seen in domestic terrain. The seepage analysis is designed to be more realistic by considering a tangent and meandering section of levee. The levee was idealized to reflect the relevant characteristics by considering the curved angle of 90 degrees and 130 degrees in the spatial frequencies, water elevation conditions, and hydraulic conductivities. Seepage analysis becomes more detailed and precise with the seepage curve shape which is interpreted to indicate the flow of three-dimensional numerical analysis program using VisualFEA. As a result of the analysis, it is shown that the water level in the straight levee was constant, regardless of hydraulic conductivities, and the total head in the meandering section was increased by the overlapping of seepage. Consequently, it is found that the total head was increased more significantly in the case of 90 degrees curved levees than 130 degrees, and the total head showed similar characteristics In the straight levee.
