Near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS) was used as a rapid and nondestructive method to determine the fatty acid composition in intact seed samples of rapeseed(Brassica napus L.). A total of 349 samples(about 2 g of intact seeds) were scanned in the reflectance mode of a scanning monochromator, and the reference values for fatty acid composition were measured by gas-liquid chromatography. Calibration equations for individual fatty acids were developed using the regression method of modified partial least-squares with internal cross validation(n=249). The equations had low SECV(standard errors of cross-validation), and high $R^2$(coefficient of determination in calibration) values(>0.8) except for palmitic and eicosenoic acid. Prediction of an external validation set(n=100) showed significant correlation between reference values and NIRS estimated values based on the SEP(standard error of prediction), $r^2$(coefficient of determination in prediction), and the ratio of standard deviation(SD) of reference data to SEP. The models developed in this study had relatively higher values(> 3.0 and 0.9, respectively) of SD/SEP(C) and $r^2$ for oleic, linoleic, and erucic acid, characterizing those equations as having good quantitative information. The results indicated that NIRS could be used to rapidly determine the fatty acid composition in rapeseed seeds in the breeding programs for high quality rapeseed oil.

In order to evaluate the effect of seed weight on different aspect of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) seed germination and growth characteristics. Quantity of sinapine leaked from seed was greater as the viability of seeds was dropped by the time elapsed of seed aging model and long storage condition in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). The cultivar of safflower was Jin-Sun and the seeds that are separated to three different weights of small, middle, and large were used in this experiment. Large seeds revealed the highest germination percent, coleoptiles fresh weight, coleoptiles dry weight, radicle fresh weight and 1000 seed weights than other seed weight. Seed weight had little effect on yield while seed number exerted a positive influence. Interestingly, yield per plant and its major components, number of capsules and capsule weights, revealed a negligible relationship with oil content.

Safflower, a draught and salt tolerant oil seed crop of Compositae family, has been cultivated around the world mainly as source of edible oils and dyes, where India, the USA, Mexico, Australia, and Ethiopia contributing about 85% of the production altogether. In this study we have characterized some selected morphological properties of safflower plant and determined the the total phenolic content (TPC) and fatty acid composition in seeds of 237 genetic resources. All the seed coats were white colored while the petals had red, yellow and white pigments. The yellow was the predominant petal color being recorded in 182 accessions followed by red occurring in 49 accessions. The petal color of 47 of the accessions changed with development while the 190 accession showed no change of color. The leaves are ovate to obovate, mostly with dentate (21 moderate and 205 weak) and few smooth (11) margins. The plant length, leaf length, and leaf width were ranged between 65.7 and 160.8 cm, 14.3 and 37.0 cm, and 3.3 and 12.1 cm, respectively. The TPC was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu method and fatty acid compositions were evaluated using gas chromatography. The TPC content ranged from 23.71 to 132.72 µgGAE/mg dried extract (DE). The seeds of safflower genetic resources accounted an average crude fat content of 26.25% (14.84 to 41.70%). The total fatty acid is mainly comprised of 71.72% linoleic acid (18:2) and 20.08% oleic acid (18:1) on average, the remaining palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0) and linolenic acid (18:3) contributing 5.84, 2.23 and 0.15 %, respectively. The fatty acid composition of safflower seeds has shown great variability, where oleic and linoleic acid have a wide range of variation, from 9.23 to 83.35% and from 10.46 to 82.62%, respectively

We investigated the effect of paclobutrazol (PB) and prohexadione-Ca (PC) on seed yield, and the content of oils and endogenous gibberellin in flax grown in a greenhouse. Flax seedlings were cultivated in a greenhouse with average ambient temperature ranging from $35^{\circ}C$ to $38^{\circ}C$ during the growing period, and then PB and PC were applied on the leaves. The height of flax plants was reduced significantly by the foliar application of PB and PC. The highest ripening seed rate recorded was 94.5% with 2000 ppm PC; a 10.3% increase compared with that of the control. Both PB and PC markedly increased the fructification of flax seed. The application of two plant growth retardants resulted in higher seed production in flax seedlings grown in open field than in those grown in a greenhouse. The highest oil content was observed in flax treated with PC, whereas, the lowest oil content was observed in flax treated with PB. The oil content and ratio of unsaturated fatty acids were higher in flax seedlings grown in greenhouse than in those grown in open field. The level of two endogenous bioactive gibberellins ($GA_1$ and $GA_4$) in flax seeds decreased with the application of PB and PC. The flax plants treated with PB and PC presented higher secoisolariciresinol diglucoside content than that of the control. The optimal concentration of PC was found to be 2000 ppm. In conclusion, the foliar application of 2000 ppm PC might be useful in increasing oil content and seed production in flax plants.
This study primarily attempted to establish the method for the determination of the adulteration in the sesame oil. First of all, extensive experiment was conducted to determine the composition of genuine sesame oil prepared from Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese sesame seed. Sesamin and sterols in unsaponfiable matter were examined along with fatty acid in saponifiable fraction by Gc. There was no significant difference in the composition of sesamin and sterols in sesame oils prepared from Korean and foreign seeds. The ranges of sesamin and ${\beta}-sitosterol$ against campesterol were 3.32~5.46 and 2.39~2.99 respectively in all samples. Similiar composition of fatty acids was showed in all pure sesame oils, in which the contents were 8.37~lO.09% palmitic acid, 4.61~5.50% stearic acid, 35.24~39.97% oleic acid, 43.04~49.76% linoleic acid, O.21~O.31% linolenic acid and 0.40~O.69% arachidic acid. Among the commercial sesame oils sold in Markets, three sesame oils from Japan revealed low sesamin, high linoleic acid and linolenic acid, and low oleic acid and stearic acid, suggesting the adulteration with soybean oil.
Essential oils of coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) seeds were extracted by three extraction methods, steam distillation extraction (SDE), hexane extraction (HE) and supercritical extraction (SE), to compare their insecticidal activities against Sitophilus oryzae and S. zeamais. Although the essential oil extracted by HE and SE did not show insecticidal activities, the essential oil extracted by SDE showed the highest insecticidal activities against S. oryzae and S. zeamais. The chemical compositions of the essential oil extracted by SDE were analyzed by GC-MS. The most abundant compounds were linalool (59.92%), camphor (7.94%), linalool oxide (7.70%), p-cymene (7.44%), ${\alpha}-pinene$ (6.44%), limonene (3.29%) and geranyl acetate (3.19%). Camphor and linalool as major constituents showed the highest insecticidal activities against S. oryzae and S. zeamais whereas other constituents did not show insecticidal activities. As a result, the essential oil extracted by SDE, camphor and linalool showed a potential for development as insecticide against the storage pests.

In order to better understand the quality of Korean cactus, Opuntia humifusa, as the functional foodstuffs, it's seeds, stems and fruits were analyzed. In addition, we performed quality evaluation on cookies manufactured with cactus powder added. The results showed the soluble nitrogen-free component levels in the cactus to be very high. The highest component levels were crude fiber(48.75%) and crude fat(7.38%) in the seeds, crude ash(15.39%) in the stems, and moisture(11.26%) and crude protein(8.79%) in the fruits. The antioxidant activities of the cactus were evaluated based on peroxide values(POV), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS value), and electron donating ability(EDA) using the DPPH method. The POVs for soybean oil containing a 0.05% concentrated water extract from each part of the cactus revealed a remarkable antioxidant effects on peroxidation as storage time increased. The TBA values were 63.65% in BHT, 60.67% in the stems, 57.31% in the fruits and 49.16% in the seeds. The EDAs were 30.26% in the stems, 25.89% in the fruits, and 25.65% in the seeds. The total polyphenol contents of the water soluble materials from the cactus were 3.14 g/100 g in the fruits, 2.93 g in the stems and 2.11 g in the seeds. For the cookies, as the amounts of fruit and stem powder increased, the spreadness was significantly lowered, but moisture content was increased compared to the control. The color degree of the cookies changed from dim to intense as more fruit powder was added, resulting from a decrease in the L- and b-values and a significantly increased a-value. With the addition of stem powder, the L- and a-values revealed no significant differences, while the b-value was lowered compared to the control as more stem powder added. For texture changes of the fruit cookies, there were significant differences in hardness, gumminess, cohesiveness, springiness and brittleness. The stem cookies, however, showed only differences in hardness, gumminess, and brittleness, and not in cohesiveness and springiness. Finally, an overall sensory preference was found with the 1% fruit powder and 3% stem powder additions.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of sowing date on yield component and yield in sprout-soybean. Six sprout-soybean cultivars were planted on three sowing dates in 2000 and 2001. 100-seed weight, number of seeds per pod, number of seeds, number of pods per plant, and ratio of empty pods distinct differences between sowing dates and cultivars. All yield components except the 100-seed weight and number of seeds per pod diminished recording where the sowing day will be late. The ratio of pods with two or three seeds was 77.5 from 80.9 percents. The ratio of two-seed pods were affected by sowing date. The yield of soybean of May 25 sowing was 290 kg/10a followed by June 15 and July 5 sowing with 269 kg/10a and 221 kg/10a, respectively Late sowing greatly decreased the yield of Doremikong, while yields of Tawonkong were more a less stable. In 2000, yield showed positive correlation with number of branches, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, dry weight, leaf area, and oil content. While yield of 2001 showed positive correlation with number of nodes on main stem, stem thickness, number of pods per plant, dry weight, and leaf area.
