  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the factor of phytotoxicity for herbicides(bensulfuron methyl, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, dimepiperate, molinate) on flood direct-seeded rice. The phytotoxicity of herbicides was evaluated under controlled environment condition. Bensulfuron methyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl reduced more rice growth, especially root growth on low temperature(20/$11^{\circ}C$) than high temperature(30/$22^{\circ}C$) cultivations. The phytotoxicity of bensulfuron methyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl were increased relatively by non-nutrient and nutrient solution. cultivation, respectively. The rice applied bensulfuron methyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl with pH 3.5, 5.5, 7.5 and 9.5 solution became low growth rate on low pH of pH 3.5 and 5.5 solution cultivation. Bensulfuron methyl application with pH 5.5 and pH 7.5 solution, and pyrazosulfuronethyl application with pH 7.5 and 9.5 solution reduced rice growth inhibition. The root growth of rice seeded in 6cm depth of water solution applied herbicides was suppressed by bensulftuon methyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, the growth of shoot was suppressed heavily by dimepiperate and molinate, in particular dimepiperate suppressed about the growth of 90%. The phytotoxicity of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl became high on light clay soil of non-fertilizer condition and sand loam soil of fertilizer condition, bensulfuron methyl became high on sand loam soil.

  • An optimum seeding date for carrots growing in Jeju was determined. In early growth stage, the number of leaves was more in Hyang-yang #2 cultivar (HY2) than that in the others, meanwhile that of Hukjun 5 chon (H5) and Shinhukjun 5 chon (S5) was higher in the latter half of the growing season. The weight of leaves was greater in HY2 until 2 months after seeding, but thereafter drastically increased and resulted significant difference at harvest in S5. The length of roots was greater in H5 and S5 than in HY2 when seeded on July 17 and measured after September 13, but it was similar in all cultivars when seeded on August 1 and later. The diameter of the roots was greatest in HY2, regardless of seeding dates, meanwhile no difference was found among other cultivars. The weight of roots was greatest in HY2 when seeded on July 17, August 1 or later, meanwhile it was greater in H5 after November, when seeded on August 15. The percentage of roots cracked was 20, 15, and 10% respectively for HY2, S5 and H5. The percentage of roots branched was 0.3% in HY2. The percentage of roots cracked or branched was much higher when seeded on August 1 than on July 17, and was high (40%) in HY2 and S5, compared to H5 when seeded on August 15. The content of sucrose, glucose and fructose increased until 110 days after seeding in all cultivars, but fructose and glucose contents decreased in about 135 days after seeding, but sucrose contents increased continuously even after 135 days. Sucrose content increased and fructose and glucose contents decreased in S5, but this trend was reversed after late November. Sugar contents was different among the cultivars seeded on August 15, while sucrose content decreased and glucose and fructose contents increased with time. The content of ${\beta}$-carotene was more than 12,000 IU in all cultivars, but decreased in 170 days after seeded on July 17. The content was highest in HY2 and followed by S5 and H5 in order. It was not different among the cultivars in 170 days after seeding on August 1, but was higher in S5 than the other cultivars in 170 days after seeded on late and decreased with seeding date.

  • Blanket Copper films were chemically vapor deposited on six kinds for substrates for scrutinizing the change of characteristics induced by the difference of substrates and seeding layers. Both TiN/Si and {{{{ { SiO}_{2 } }}/Si wafers were used as-recevied and with the Cu-seeding layers of 40${\AA}$ and 160${\AA}$ which were produced by sputtering The CVD processes were exectued at the deposition temperatures between 130$^{\circ}C$ and 260$^{\circ}C$ us-ing (hfc)Cu(VTMS) as a precursor. The deposition rate of 40$^{\circ}C$ Cu-seeded substrates was higher than that of other substrates and especially in seeded {{{{ { SiO}_{2 } }}/Si substrate because of the incubation period reducing in-duced by seeding layer at the same deposition time and temperature. The resistivity of 160${\AA}$ Cu seeded substrate was lower then that of 40 ${\AA}$ because the nucleation and growth behavior in Cu-island is different from the behavior in {{{{ { SiO}_{2 } }} substrate due to the dielectricity of {{{{ { SiO}_{2 } }}.

  • Cu films were deposited by chemical wapor deposition on the as-received substrates (TiN/Si) and three kinds of Cu-seeded substrates (Cu/TiN/Si) which had seeding layer in the thick ness of 5 ${\AA}$ and 130 ${\AA}$ coated by ICB(Ionized Cluster Beam) method. The effect of Cu seeding layers on the growth rate, crystallinity, grain size uniformity and film adhesion strength of final CVD-Cu films was investigated by scanning eletron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffractometry and scratch test. The growth rate was found to incresase somewhat in the case of ICB-seeding. The XRD patterns of the Cu films on the as-received substrate and ICB Cu-seeded substrates exhibited the diffraction peaks corresponding to FCC phase, but the peak intensity ratio($I_{111}/I_{200}$) of Cu films deposited on the ICB Cu-seeded substrates increased compared with that of Cu films on the as-received substrate. The resistivity of final Cu film on 40 ${\AA}$ seeded substrate was observed as the lowest value, 2.42 $\mu\Omega\cdot$cm compared with other Cu films. In adhesion test, as the seeding thickness increased from zero to 130 ${\AA}$, the adhesion strength increased from 21N to 27N.

  • Field experiment were carried out to elucidate the changes of weed occurrence according to the sowing time and to establish the efficient weed control system in dry seeded rice cultivation. E crus-galli and D. sanguinalis are tow major weeds at the earlier sowings, but C. difformis was dominating at the later sowing. In the case of E. crus-galli, there was a tendency of gaining its dominance values as the rice growth stage advances. The later the sowing time was, the more weeds occurred at the early rice growth stages: However, when measured at heading, total dry weight was greater at the earlier sowings. Yield loss due to weeds were also greater at the earlier sowings. Community diversity of weeds was greater at the later sowings, while specific weed was gradually dominating as rice growth stage advances, regardless of sowing time. When herbicides were applied before 15 DAS, weeds were effectively controlled only upto 35 DAS. So systemic herbicide application, one on 0 to 10 DAS and the other on just after flooding, appeared to be recommendable in direct seeded rice cultivation.

  • Transplantation of cultured chondrocytes can regenerate cartilage tissues in cartilage defects in humans. However, this method requires a long culture period to expand chondrocytes to a large number of cells for transplantation. In addition, chondrocytes may dedifferentiate during long-term culture. These problems can potentially be overcome by the use of undifferentiated or partially developed cartilage precursor cells derived from neonatal cartilage, which, unlike chondrocytes from adult cartilage, have the capacity for rapid in vitro cell expansion and may retain their differentiated phenotype during long-term culture. The purpose of this study was to compare the cell growth rate and phenotypic modulation during in vitro culture between adult chondrocytes and neonatal chondrocytes, and to demonstrate the feasibility of regenerating cartilage tissues in vivo by transplantation of neonatal chondrocytes expanded in vitro and seeded onto polymer scaffolds. When cultured in vitro, chondrocytes isolated from neonatal (immediately postpartum, 2 h of age) rats exhibited much higher growth rate than chondrocytes isolated from adult rats. After 5 days of culture, more neonatal chondrocytes were in the differentiated state than adult chondrocytes. Cultured neonatal chondrocytes were seeded onto biodegradable polymer scaffolds and transplanted into athymic mice's subcutaneous sites. Four weeks after implantation, neonatal chondrocyte-seeded scaffolds formed white cartilaginous tissues. Histological analysis of the implants with hematoxylin and eosin showed mature and well-formed cartilage. Alcian blue/ safranin-O staining and Masson's trichrome staining indicated the presence of highly sulfated glycosarninoglycans and collagen, respectively, both of which are the major extracellular matrices of cartilage. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the collagen was mainly type II, the major collagen type in cartilage. These results showed that neonatal chondrocytes have potential to be a cell source for cartilage tissue engineering.

  • In spite water direct seeding cultivation of rice has advantages in terms of laborsaving and cost-down, it demonstrates uneven seedling establishment and difficult weed management. To select an applicable mat for mulching system of water seeded rice, weed occurrence, growth and yield performances of rice, and soil temperature were evaluated in several kinds of biodegradable mulching material. Field studies were conducted at the experimental farm of National Crop Experiment Station in 1999 and 2000. Among the mats tested in 1999, Safer-mat had the greatest effect on inhibiting weed occurrence and Lawn-mat demonstrated the least efficacy of weed control (EWC) value. In Safer-mat treatment, Ludwigia prostrata was the dominant weed species but Echinochloa crus-galli was not observed. Different kinds of mulching material from the mats studied in 1999 were tested in 2000. Biodegradable polyester (PES) coated on the recycled paper for newspaper press (RP) treatments showed similar or higher EWC values than non-mulched broadcast seed rice with 2 times of herbicide application (BC-herbicide) and Safer-mat that was the most effective mat on preventing weed appearance in 1999. Immediately after mat mulching on the surface of paddy soil, five pregerminated rice seeds were manually sown in each 3cm-hole formerly punctured at 30${\times}$14 cm spacing in 2000. All the 3 kinds of mulching material tested in 2000 had better seedling stand than BC-herbicide treatment. Rice yield in PES coated with 10 thickness on RP (PES10 $\mu\textrm{m}$+RP) was a little higher than in BC-herbicide treatment but the former produced less panicles in unit land area than the latter. PES10 $\mu\textrm{m}$+RP demonstrated a great effect on raising soil surface temperature than non-mulching treatment throughout the period of seedling establishment.
