Effect of a Mixture of Extracts from Residues of Onion Left after Onion Harvesting and Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) on Productivity and Quality Characteristics of Organic Onions (양파 수확 후 잔재물과 쇠비름 추출물이 유기농 양파의 수확량 및 품질 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study assessed the effects of treatment with sap extract from onion residues postharvest and purslane on the quality and quantity of organic onions. At the bending stage, onions treated with the sap extract showed vigorous growth, with higher plant heights, more leaves, and longer sheath lengths than untreated onions. The onion yield was significantly increased when the plant was treated with extracted sap as compared with that of untreated plants (p<0.05). The bulb weight distribution of onions in the mixed onion and purslane treatment was also significantly increased (~300 g) as compared with that of the other treatment (p<0.05). Except for CaO and S, the mineral content of the onions produced from plants treated with the onion and purslane extract mixture was higher than those of onions in the other treatment. The hardness of onions produced from plants treated with the onion and purslane extract was significantly increased (8% and 20%, respectively) as compared with that of onions produced from plants treated with the onion extract only or no treatment (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the sugar contents of the onions produced from extract-treated and nonextract-treated plants. Postharvest, the content of inorganic components (phosphate, calcium, sulfuric acid, and manganese) was higher in soil treated with the onion extract than in soil treated with the onion and purslane extract and non-treated soil. It can be concluded that residues left after onion harvests and purslane extract can be used as natural and environmentally friendly materials for the cultivation of organic onions.

  • The effect of carbofuran (2, 3-Dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-benzofuran-7-ylmethyl carbamate) on rice growth was evaluated as a direct growth stimulant of rice. For this, several laboratory and field trials conducted from 1981 to 1986 at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station. Carbofuran solution affected the germination of rice seed. The growth of seminal roots was adversely affected by the increase of carbofuran concentrations while the length of single root became longer with the concentration increment up to 50 ppm. Carbofuran application (0.18g ai/$m^2$) at the rice nurserybed significantly enhanced the rice growth and recovered from the Low temperature damage. The enhancement effect was more pronounced at the plot that applied carbofuran before rice seeding as soil incorporation than top-dressing. The effect of growth enhancement further extended to transplanted lowland rice. This effect was greater at double cropping area (late of June transplanting) compared to single cropping area (May transplanting). Among important agronomic traits, the increment of panicle number was the most important direct effect for increasing rice grain yield by carbofuran application. Carbofuran application also exhibited the reducing effect against low temperature damage at reductive division stage and at rice heading stage and against submergence damage at booting stage through enhancement of fertile grain ratio, ripening ratio or photosynthetic activity.

Synergistic Effects of Low Dose Gamma Irradiation and Growth Regulators on Seed Germination, Growth and Photosynthesis in Rice (Oryza sativa L.) (벼의 종자 발아와 생육 및 광합성에 대한 저선량 감마선과 생장조절물질의 상승작용 효과)

  • To investigate the synergistic effects of low dose gamma irradiation and growth regulators on the growth and photosynthesis in rice (Oryza sativa L.), laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted using 4-year-old rice seeds. In the laboratory experiment, the germination rate was increased in 0.001 ppm IBA treatment, showing the synergistic effect of gamma irradiation and growth regulators. The seedling growth was increased by treatment of GA₃ and IBA, the irradiated groups having higher than the non-irradiated ones. Particularly, it was remarkable in 0.001 ppm IBA. In greenhouse experiment, seedling growth was increased in response to a combination of gamma irradiation and 0.001 ppm IBA. Effective quantum yield of PSⅡ(Ф/sub PSⅡ/) and photochemical quenching (qP) were increased, while non-photochemical quenching (qN) was decreased by 0.001 ppm IBA. A synergistic effect of gamma irradiation and IBA was only found in seedling growth. The present results suggest that low dose gamma irradiation and growth regulator could synergistically stimulate seedling growth.

  • New orchardgrass(Dactylis glomerata L.) variety named as “Jangbeol 101” was developed by the National Livestock Research Institute(NLRI) in 2002. To develope the new variety of orchardgras, 5 superior clones were selected and polycrossed for seed production. Synthetic seeds were examined on the agronomic growth characteristics and forage production at Suwon from 1995 to 1998, and regional trials were conducted in Suwon, Namwon and Pyungchang from 1999 to 2002 and Jeju from 2000 to 2002, respectively. “Jangbeol 101” showed semi-erect growth habit in fall and spring and medium type in length of flag leaf and upper internode. Plant height of “Jangbeol 101” was short compared to that of standard variety, “Ambassador” and heading date was delayed about 2 days as 14th May compared to Ambassador. Characters such as winter hardiness, regrowth, moisture tolerance, disease resistance of “Jangbeol 101” were stronger or better than those of Ambassador. “Jangbeol 101” showed 9% higher dry matter yield as 12,374 kg/ha compared to Amabassador. Nutritive value was appeared to be similar in both varieties.

Characters such as winter hardiness, regrowth, moisture tolerance, disease resistance of "Jangbeol 102" were stronger or better than those of Ambassador, specially in regrowth and disease resistance. "Jangbeol 102" showed 18% higher dry matter yield(13,430kg/ha) compared to Amabassador. Nutritive value was appeared to be similar in both varieties.assador.   • 'Lucky one' is a new orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) variety developed by the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) in 2014. Four superior clones were selected and polycrossed for seed production to develope this new variety of orchardgrass. The agronomic growth characteristics and forage productivity of 'Lucky one' were examined at Cheonan from 2010 to 2011. Regional adaption trials were conducted in Cheonan, Hoengseong, Jinju, and Jeju from 2012 to 2014. 'Lucky one' showed growth habit of medium type in fall and spring. It has short flag leaf length with long upper internode. Plant height of 'Lucky one' was 3 cm more than that of control variety, 'Amba'. Its heading date was 2 days later than that of control variety 'Amba'. Characteristics such as waterlogging and disease resistance of 'Lucky one' were stronger or better than those of control variety, 'Amba', Especially, dry matter yield of 'Lucky one' (16,191 kg/ha) was increased 38% compared to that of control variety, 'Amba'(11,778 kg/ha). Nutritive feed values of 'Lucky one' appeared to be similar to those of control variety 'Amba' except in Vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and crude protein content.

Characteristics such as waterlogging and disease resistance of 'Onnuri 2ho' were stronger or better than those of control variety, 'Amba', Especially, the dry matter yield of 'Onnuri 2ho' (15,814 kg/ha) was increased 34 % compared to that of control variety, Amba (11,778 kg/ha). Nutritive feed values of 'Onnuri 2ho' appeared to be similar to that of control variety 'Amba' except in Vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD).

  • This study was performed to investigate the creeping habit in top-cross progeny, and to determine the relationship among the major agronomic characters in the top-cross progeny testing based on the The The conclusions of simple correlation coefficients. the study were summarized as follows ; The creeping type crossed with the non-creeping tester was the greatest in width and seed yield. For all three characters, the creeping type crossed with the non-creeping tester and the non-creeping type crossed with the creeping tester were greater than any other combination. The top-cross method was desirable for the study of general and specific combining ability. The sensitivity of the tester to differentiate the creeping and non-creeping types was better when a non-creeping tester was used.

Selection of Salt Tolerant Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) Mutant Lines Induced by Irradiation of Proton Ion Beams and Gamma Ray (양성자 및 감마선처리에 의한 유채 내염성 변이계통 선발)

  • This study was carried out to develop salt tolerant varities of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) which can be grown in the high salty reclaimed land. The seeds of three varieties 'Naehan', 'Tammi', and 'Halla' were treated by proton ion beams and gamma rays with 0 to 2,000 Gy. For the selection of salt tolerant lines, emergence and survival rate, and growth characteristics of $M_2$ to $M_4$ generations were investigated in the Saemangeum reclaimed fields with the different salt concentrations. The lines with potential salt tolerance were selected in the $M_4$ generation and tested indoor for their growth characteristics. There was no significant changes in the soil pH for $M_4$ generation during growth period. However, soil EC was higher in early spring than sowing period (mid October). In $M_4$ generation test, the seeds of original and selected line showed high rates of emergence and survival, as determined one month after sowing. After wintering, however, the original varieties showed the significant reduction in the survival rate, while the selected lines showed a higher survival rate and good growth, leading to the completion of their life cycle. Consequently we selected 9 lines from $M_4$ generation with better performance in growth and yield. Soil EC was $2.8{\sim}4.3dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ during $M_4$ generation growth period. The laboratory test of the lines selected from $M_4$ generation was made for their salt tolerance potential. The selected lines showed higher chlorophyll and proline contents than the original varieties. There was also no significant difference in the emergence rate of seed between the original and selected varieties. In 200 mM natural sea salt, the $N{\gamma}600-21-1-641$ line derived from 'Naehan' was the highest in growth rate, leaf chlorophyll and proline contents. $T{\gamma}800-20-2-461$ line derived from 'Tammi' didn't show significant difference in growth rate compared to original variety in 200 mM and withered in 250 mM like other lines as time passed. $H{\gamma}200-7-1-740$ line showed similar growth and chlorophyll content compared to its original variety.

Breeding of New, Orange Mini/Medium Type, High Yielding Cut Flower Gerbera hybrida 'Sweety' (오렌지색 중.소륜 절화용 다수성 거베라 신품종 '스위티' 육성)

  • A new orange-colored, cut flower gerbera (Gerbera hybrida Hort.) cultivar 'Sweety' was developed from a cross between 'Grandeur' and 'Songsongee', followed by selections of seedlings and lines at the Flower Breeding Research Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES) from 1999 to 2004. Three time evaluations were conducted from 2003 for the detailed characteristics of the new cultivar. 'Sweety' has semi-double type mini- or medium-sized flowers in good harmony with orange(RHS, 38-A) ray florets and a green center. It has good, stable flower shape and strong peduncle, and its vase life was 10.4 days. The average flower yield was about 51.0 stems per plant/year in greenhouse trails during 2003 and 2004. This cultivar was registered to the Korea Seed and Variety Service for commercialization in 2006. Year-round production of this cultivar is possible in the greenhouse condition in Korean climate.
