A new small red bean cultivar, 'Geomguseul', was artificially crossed between 'Chilbo' and 'SA8412-3-1-4-3-3-2-3' in 1998, fixed excellent agronomic characters by pedigree breeding method, and selected for the further trials with the name of 'Miryang 10'. It was prominent and showed good result, such as high grain quality, lodging resistance, and high-antioxidant activity in the regional adaptation yield trials (RYT) for three years from 2009 to 2011 and released for the public consumption as the name of 'SA9801-24-4-3-1' in 2011. 'Geomguseul' has a semi-determinate growth habit, yellow flower, green embryonic axis, black seed coat, white hilum, and small spherical seed (12.2 grams per 100 seeds). The average yield of 'Geomguseul' was 2.01 MT/ha in the regional yield trials (RYT) carried out for three years from 2009 to 2011 which was a little higher than that (1.98 MT/ha) of the check variety, 'Chungju'.
Seedling blight of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the most serious diseases in Korea. This study was performed to control seedling blight in the field where sesame has been cultured for 4 years of Industrial Crop Division at the Crop Experiment Station. The pathogenic fungi of seedling blight which is known Fusarium oxysporum f. vasinfectium and Rhizoctonia solani was inoculated to the wheat media and it was spreaded on the experimental field in the concentration of 109 of wheat media mixed with 10g of fine soil. Seed sterilization was the most effective method for seedling blight control for two year experiment. Seed sterilant Benlate-T was highly effective for con trolling seedling blight with infection rate of 4% and yield of 40.7kg per 10a comparing to the control with infection rate of 96% and grain yield of 6.4kg per l0a, the other chemicals, Busan 30, Vitathiram, Captan showed good effect to control seedling blight, but less effect to the Benlate-T. The spraying treatments on leaf surface 25 days after sowing were not effective to seedling blight.

$YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Y123) powders for the fabrication of bulk superconductors were synthesized by the powder reaction method using $Y_2O_3$ (99.9% purity), $BaCO_3$ (99.75%) and CuO (99.9%) powders. The raw powders were weighed to the cation ratio of Y:Ba:Cu=1:2:3, mixed and calcined at $880^{\circ}C-930^{\circ}C$ in air with intermediate repeated crushing steps. It was found that the formation of Y123 powder was more sensitive to reaction temperature than reaction time. The calcined Y123 powder and a mixture of (Y123 + 0.25 mole $Y_2O_3$ + 1 wt.% $CeO_2$, $Y_{1.5}Ba_2Cu_3O_x$ (Y1.5)) were used as raw powders for the fabrication of poly-grain or single grain superconductors. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_{c,onset}$) of the sintered Y123 sample was 91 K and the transition width was as large as 11 K, whereas the $T_{c,onset}$ of the melt-grown Y1.5 sample was 90.5 K and the transition width was 3.5 K. The critical current density ($J_c$) at 77 K and 0 T of the sintered Y123 was 700 $A/cm^2$, whereas the $J_c$ of the top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) processed Y1.5 sample was $3.2{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$. The magnetic flux density (H) at 77 K of the TSMG-processed Y123 and Y1.5 sample showed the 0.53 kG and 2.45 kG, respectively, which are 15% and 71% of the applied magnetic field of 3.5 kG. The high H value of the TSMG-processed Y1.5 sample is attributed to the formation of the larger superconducting grain with fine Y211 dispersion.
Since seeds of Italian ryegrass should be imported every year, it is necessary to investigate the prossible production of seeds in Italian ryegrass field after rice. Seven Italian ryegrass varieties were planted on October 8, 1986 at National Honam Crop Experiment Station at Iksan and clippings were made on April 10 and April 30 in 1987. Headings of K-11 and T.N.T were earlier than those of Tetrone and Bettina. For all varieties tested, heading date was delayed and 1,000 grain weight was decreased linearly as the clipping was made later. Length, width and thickness of a grain were reduced by clipping and later clipping, while tetraploid varieties produced larger grains than diploid varieties. The germination percentage and germination speed at $25^{\circ}C$ were higher than at 15$^{\circ}C$. The final germination percentage was lower at the later clippings and was higher at 15$^{\circ}C$, and earlier varieties showed higher germination percentage. Uniformity of germination was greater at $25^{\circ}C$ and was decreased as the clipping was made later, and the eariler varieties such as K-11 were germinated more uniformly. Average number of days to germination was longer at 15$^{\circ}C$ than at $25^{\circ}C$ and was longer at later clipping. The germination percentage was decreased linearly as the heading was delayed, while it increased linearly as the 1,000 grain weight was increased.
Our objective was to determine the differences in the rate and extent of dry matter digestion between barley subjected to differing agronomic variables. Two malting barley varieties, Copeland and Metcalfe were seeded at rates of 200 and 400 plants/$m^2$. Each of these varieties received nitrogen fertilizer at rates of 0, 30, 60 and 120 kg/ha, resulting in a total of 20 different barley grain samples. Samples were ground through a 6mm screen and approximately 3 g of each weighed into 50 ${\mu}m$ Dacron bags and sealed. The bags were incubated in three ruminally cannulated Holstein cattle for periods of 0, 3, 6 and 24 h. Using the data obtained from these incubations, rates of digestion were able to be predicted. The soluble fraction ranged from 0.229-0.327, the slowly degradable fraction ranged from 0.461-0.656, and the undegradable fraction ranged from 0.038-0.299. The rates of digestion ranged from 0.127-0.165 $h^{-1}$ and the effective degradability ranged from 0.527-0.757. At the Canora location, the Copeland samples which received 120 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilizer had a significantly lower (p = 0.013) soluble fraction than the rest of the samples at that location. A significant interaction (p = 0.009) was seen between the seeding rate and nitrogen fertilizer application with samples from the Canora location, as well as significant differences (p = 0.029) between nitrogen application rates in samples from the Indian head location. The rate of digestion of samples from the Indian head location differed (p = 0.020) between the two seeding rates, with samples seeded at 200 seed/$m^2$ having a slightly higher rate of degradation. Differences in the effective degradability were seen between the different nitrogen application rates with samples from both the Canora and Indian head locations, as well as an (p = 0.004) interaction between the seeding rate and nitrogen fertilizer application rate. Although there was not a clear correlation between the different variables, both nitrogen application and seeding rate did have a significant effect on the rates and extent of digestion across each of the four locations.
A total of 192 Korean landraces were investigated for the comparison of each other as useful germplasm to organic farming and examined correlation between quantitative traits. Almost Korean landraces were classified into medium-heading variety and average days from seeding to heading was 111.1 days. Plant height and culm length were longer about 20∼40cm than general Japonica cultivar. Average width of leaf blade and average length of panicle were 1.3cm and 22.4cm, respectively, Average number of panicles per plant was 10.0 and almost varieties showed low tilling habit. Average length/width ratio of brown rice was 1.7 and several varieties were long grain type and average 1,000 grain weight was 21.6g. In correlation coefficient among quantitative traits, positive significant correlations were observed between culm length and leaf width, days from seeding to heading, but negative correlations were observed between days from seeding to heading and 1000 grain weight. 27.1% of Korean landraces showed weak and lodging degree in culm strength and 3.6% of total varieties showed purple margin on leaf blade and leaf sheath. In leaf blade angle and flag leaf angle, erect type was 46.9% and 10.9%, respectively. 24.0% of total varieties showed the slow and late degree of leaf senescence. The rate of awned type, waxy type and brown seed coat were 74.5%, 20.3% and 4.2%, respectively. The color of stigma, spikelet, apiculus and awn showed diverse color such as white, brown, red and purple.
Experiments were conducted to find out the optimum level of slow release N fertilizers when total amounts of nitrogen required throughout the growing season in paddy were applied in the soil of seedling box. To evaluate the emergence rate and growth of rice seedlings, five levels of Meister (MS) 10, MS S10, and latex coated urea (LCU) which are equivalent to 0, 40, 60, 80, and 100kg N h $a^{-l}$ were mixed in soil of the seedling box. Emergence rate differed depending on the fertilizers and N levels; in MS 10 plots the emergence rate was 40.8% at 40kg N h $a^{-l}$ and no seedlings were emerged at the higher levels, in MS S10 plots higher than 80% at all the N levels, and decreased with the N levels from 70.0% at 40 kg N h $a^{-l}$ to 59.5% at 100kg N h $a^{-l}$ of LCU. Seedling started to wilt at 40 kg N h $a^{-l}$ of MS 10 and 80 and 100 kg N h $a^{-l}$ N of LCU on the 8th day after sowing, while seedling growth was normal at all the levels of MS S10. Field performance of rice was evaluated at the 0, 30, 60, 90, 120kg N h $a^{-l}$ of MS S10 applied in the soil of seedling box and N was not applied in paddy. Grain yield at 90 and 120kg N h $a^{-l}$ of MS S10 was similar to conventional urea split application (120 kg N h $a^{-l}$), but significantly higher compared to 30 and 60kg N h $a^{-l}$ of MS S10. Fertilizer N recovery decreased with N levels and the N recovery at 90 kg N h $a^{-l}$ of MS S10 and conventional urea split application were 62.2 % and 44.2%, respectively, with similar grain yield. The optimum level of MS S10 to be applied in seedling box seems to be about 90 kg N h $a^{-l}$ considering grain yield, price of fertilizer, labor applying fertilizer, and fertilizer N recovery.d fertilizer N recovery.

'Hwaweon 7' was developed from a cross between the African upland cultivar, 'Moroberekan' and 'Ilpumbyeo' based on marker-aided backcross selection. The recurrent parent, Ilpumbyeo is a high grain quality cultivar with medium to late maturity. Hwaweon 7 is nearly isogenic to Ilpumbyeo except a small Moroberekan introgressed segment on chromosome 6 harboring genes related with spikelets per panicle and internode diameter. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University and Chungcheongnamdo Agricultural Research & Extension (CARES), Yesan in 2010 and 2011. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) in 2012 and 2013. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as "Hwaweon7". This cultivar averaged 80cm in culm length and has a medium growth duration. Milled rice of "Hwaweon7" is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. The average yield potential of Hwaweon 7 in grain was about 6.48 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level for two years about 5.1% higher than that of Ilpumbyeo due to increase in spikelets per panicle. This variety is tolerant to lodging and the tolerance is due to the APO1 gene controlling the base internode diameter on chromosome 6 introgressed from the donor parent, Moroberekan. The Apo1 gene would be useful in enhancing resistance to lodging in rice breeding program.
'Hwaweon 6' was developed from a cross between 'Hwaseongbyeo' and a wild species, Oryza minuta L. (Acc. No. 101154) based on marker-assisted selection and backcrossing. The recurrent parent 'Hwaseongbyeo' is a high grain quality cultivar with medium maturity. Hwaweon 6 is nearly isogenic to Hwaseongbyeo except a small O. minuta introgressed segment on chromosome 7 harboring genes related with spikelets per panicle. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University and Chungcheongnamdo Agricultural Research & Extension (CARES), Yesan in 2009 and 2010. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) in 2011 and 2012. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as Hwaweon 6. This cultivar averaged 80cm in culm length and has a medium growth duration. Milled rice of Hwaweon 6 is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. The average yield potential of Hwaweon 6 in grain was about 6.57 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level for two years about 3.0% higher than that of Hwaseongbyeo due to an introgression of the quantitative trait locus (QTL) for spikelets per panicle (qSPP7) from O. minuta. This variety is comparable to Hwaseongbyeo in low temperature germinability and cold tolerance. The qSPP7 QTL would be useful in enhancing yield potential in rice breeding program.

'Hwaweon 4' was developed from a cross between the African upland cultivar, 'Moroberekan' and 'Ilpumbyeo' based on marker-aided backcross selection. The recurrent parent 'Ilpumbyeo' is a high grain quality cultivar with medium to late maturity. 'Hwaweon 4' is nearly isogenic to 'Ilpumbyeo' except a small Moroberekan introgressed segment on chromosome 4 harboring the resistance gene for blast. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University in 2006 and 2007. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) from 2008 to 2009. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as 'Hwaweon 4'. This cultivar averaged 76 cm in culm length and has medium growth duration. Milled rice of 'Hwaweon 4' is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. It has low protein content. The yield potential of 'Hwaweon 4' in grain was about 6.31 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level for two years. This variety showed highly resistance reaction at the blast nursery test at four locations and also at the sequential planting method. This resistance is due to the resistance gene designated as Pi45(t) on chromosome 4 introgressed from the donor parent, 'Moroberekan'. The Pi45(t) gene would be useful inenhancing resistance to blast in rice breeding program.
