  • The effects of two Cytozyme complexes, Crop Plus and Seed Plus, applied to rice (variety: Jinheung) were evaluated during the 1980 rice growing season. Primary objectives were directed to determine the effects of rates, timing and method of application of the products on the yield of rice. For the Seed Plus test, seed was soaked in the diluted Seed Plus solution(1 : 100) for 24 hours just prior to sowing. The Crop Plus was diluted to 1 : 12 for seedling treatment. Seedling roots were immersed in the diluted solution for 3 hours before transplanting. Crop Plus spray applied at the rates of 450ml/ha or 900ml/ha when rice plants were in the panicle initiation, heading or tillering stage respectively to compare the effects of rates and timing of application. The weather was not favorable for rice growth during the growing season except the tillering stage. The foliar spray at the tillering stage was more effective than the spray at the panicle initiation, and the rates of 900ml/ha showed better results than 450ml/ha. Combination of seed treatment and foliar spray increased grain yield by 16% over untreated control plots.

  • Perilla is an excellent oil crop for linolenic acid production but still needs more research to improve grain yield and chemical properties. We tried to estimate the possibility for improving grain yield and its quality by applying nitrogen top dressing(4kg per 10a) at 5 days after flowering stage of perilla, using a cultivar Yujin. This study investigated the growth characteristics and seed quality. Nitrogen top dressing on the flowering stage has little affected on such traits as length, node number and diameter of main stem, and branch, cluster and capsules numbers per plant. But compared with standard cultivation as a control, top dressing showed more leaf chlorophyll content by 85%, higher 1000-grain-weight by 31%, and one day extension of maturing period; consequently, grain outyielded by 60% with 123kg per 10a. Seed chemical components also showed 33.3% protein and 48% oil contents that were 11.5% and 6.2% higher than those of control, respectively. Also by top dressing, saturated fatty acid (palmitic and stearic acid) decreased and linoleic acid among unsaturated fatty acids increased. It is concluded that nitrogen topdressing at late flowering stage promotes grain yield and quality of perilla.

  • Two late-maturing perilla cultivars for vegetables, ‘Ipdlkkae 1’ and ‘Manbaekdlkkae’, were planted on 15 May, 30 May, 15 June, 30 June, and 15 July in 2000 to determine the optimum planting date for seed production in Jeju Island. Significant interaction between cultivar and planting date was observed for number of days from planting to maturity. There were significant differences between two cultivars for days to flowering. Ipdlkkae 1 flowered two days earlier but matured one day later than Manbaekdlkkae. As planting was delayed from 15 May to 15 July, when averaged across two cultivars, days to flowering and maturity decreased from 137 to 77 days and 179 to 121 days, respectively. As planting was delayed, stem length, number of branches per plant and number of node on the main stem decreased from 150 to 81 cm, 17.0 to 7.3, and 16.9 to 10.3, respectively. Number of clusters per plant decreased 65.6 to 50.7 with delayed planting but number of capsules per cluster was not significantly affected by planting date. With delayed planting, 1,000-grain weight increased 3.2 to 3.9 g, but grain yield decreased from 1,820 to 1,338 kg/㏊. However, there was no significant difference for grain yield between 15 and 30 May plantings. The results of this study suggest that the optimum planting date for seed production of late maturing vegetable perilla may be from early May to late May in Jeju Island.

  • This trial was conducted to find out some tendencies in variations of grain chalkiness according to their position on a panicle. To know the varietal character in variations of chalkiness and their relations with grain weight, distribution of chalkiness in bulk seed was observed for four varieties. Milyang 23, relatively clear variety and SR601-25-1, much chalky variety were checked for the grain chalkiness in their positions on the panicle. The results obtained are summerized as follows: Rice chalkinss were varied in degree from 0 (clear) to 9 (chalky) within a variety. Large number of grains were distributed to clear for clear variety and to chalky for chalky variety, but almost equal number of grains were distributed to all degree of chalkiness for intermediate chalky variety. For the relationship between degree of chalkiness and grain weight, chalky grains founded in clear variety and clear grains founded in chalky variety decreased in weight, while in intermediate chalky varieties both grains of clear and chalky decreased. There were great varietions in grain chalkiness on a panicle for both clear and chalky varieties. There was no definite trend in distribution of chalkiness except that the first primary branch and terminal grains in every primary branch showed clear in Milyang 23. Mean degree of grain chalkiness was relatively high in grains of middle part of panicle only from Milyang 23.

  • A set of rice recombinant inbred lines was developed from a cross between a Tongil type variety, Nonganbyeo, and an indica variety, BG276, by the single seed descent method. The number of the lines in the population was 272. All the agronomic characters studied except ADV (alkali-digestion value) showed continuous variation among the RILs, implying that their inheritance mode should be quantitative. The patterns of the variation in the RILs were either normal or skewed distribution. ADVs of RILs were segregated into two groups with 1:1 ratio, indicating that ADVs in this KIL population might be controlled by one major gene. Transgressive variations were also observed in all characters. Heritability values of the characters varied from 0.488 in brown/rough rice ratio to 0.895 in alkali-digestion value. In the analysis of genotypic and phenotypic correlations, the character of yield was positively correlated with 8 different agronomic characters. The number of panicles per hill was negatively correlated with culm length, panicle length, and number of spikelets per panicle. Grain length was positively correlated with grain width, grain thickness, grain length/width ratio, white belly, ADV, and amylose. However, grain length/width ratio was negatively correlated with grain width. White core was also negatively correlated with white belly and ADV.

  • The coarsening process of two different $BaTiO_3$ single crystal seeds, one with a (111) double twin and the other without it, was investigated. Due to the presence of Twin Plane Reentrant Edge (TPRE), the coarsening rate of the twinned seed crystal was significantly higher than that without a twin. For the coarsening by the 2-dimensional nucleation and lateral growth, the energy barrier for nucleation at the TPRE was analyzed to be about a half compared with that at the terrace planes.

  • Mungbean (Vigna radiata) is a legume to East Asia that has great potential for development as traditional food and industrial crop. It produces both protein and starch rich grain. The low variability of the existing gene pool of the mungbean limits the use of conventional plant breeding to address this problem. For this purpose, an efficient means of RNA isolation from mungbean seed tissues was developed. The quality of RNA obtained by this method was sufficient for use in RT-PCR and RNA analysis.

  • [ $(Y_{0.5}Sm_{0.25}Nd_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y$ ] [(YSN)-123] high $T_c$ composite superconductors with $CeO_2$ addition were systematically investigated by top seeded melt growth (TSMG) process in air atmosphere. A melt textured $NdBa_2Cu_3O_y$ (Nd-123) single crystal was used as a seed for achieving the c-axis alignment large grains perpendicular to the surface of (YSN)-123 composite oxides. The size of $(Y_{0.5}Sm_{0.25}Nd_{0.25})_2BaCuO_5$ [(YSN)211] nonsuperconducting inclusions of the melt textured (YSN)-123 samples with $CeO_2$ addition were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the (YSN)123 superconducting matrix except in the region very close to the Nd-123 seed crystal. The sample showed a sharp superconducting transition of 91 K.

  • Various fluoride films on a glass substrate were prepared and characterized to provide a seed layer for crystalline Si film growth. The XRD analysis on $CaF_2/glass$ illustrated (220) preferential orientation and showed lattice mismatch less than 5 % with Si. We achieved a fluoride film with breakdown electric field of 1.27 MV/cm, leakage current density about $10^{-6}$ $A/cm^2$, and relative dielectric constant less than 5.6. This paper demonstrates microcrystalline silicon $({\mu}c-Si)$ film growth by using a $CaF_2/glass$ substrate. The ${\mu}c-Si$ films exhibited crystallization in (111) and (220) planes, grain size of $700\;{\AA}$, crystalline volume fraction over 65 %, dark- and photo-conductivity ratio of 124, activation energy of 0.49 eV, and dark conductivity less than $4{\times}10^{-7}$ S/cm.

  • This experiment was performed to characterize the optimum water table level for the grain quality, seed germination and diastic power of barley(var. Olbori) and wheat(var. Grumil). Olbori and Grumil grew in the 550 liter plastic pot that filled with silt loam or sandy loam. During the whole growth period, the underground water level adjusted to be 20, 30, 40, 50 and 70cm. Filled grain ratio and specific gravity were not affected by soil texture and water table. Low level of water table caused the increase of 1,000 grain weight in wheat and barley, but soil texture didn't. Crude protein content tended to be high as the water table level was high, especially in wheat. Change in crude protein content was affected by underground water level more than soil texture. And the affection was slightly higher in sandy loam than silt loam, but the difference was small. The higher level of water table led to the lower crude lipid content in barley and wheat grain. Crude lipid content of both wheat and barley grain grown in sandy loam was higher than those grown in silt loam. As the water table level down, the ash content of barley and wheat grain tend to increase, especially in sandy loam. Wheat flour yield was not affected by soil texture. It was about 65% at 20cm of water level and above 67% at 40cm water level. The seed germination of wheat and barley was more than 95% when the seeds were placed at 2$0^{\circ}C$ for three days. Regardless of soil texture, the lowest germination was seen at 20cm of water table level. And the seed germination rate increased as the underground water level became low. Above 89% of barley grains were germinated within 48 hours except 20cm level of water table in sandy loam. Diastic power of germinated barley was the lowest at 20cm of water table level, and it was almost unchanged below 30cm of water table level. And also it was not affected by soil texture.
