  • A study has been made of the Schmidt hammer rebound test for the estimation of engineering and physical characteristics of sedimentary rocks. As there is no universal formular for the estimation of rock strength due to geological conditions, in this study only sedimentary rocks are adopted to testing. The aim of study is to make the information more meaningful and useful for engineers and contractors by providing rapid, cheap and easy method. The obtained parameters were correlated and regression equations were established among Schmidt hammer rebound number, uniaxial compressive strength, tangent Young's modulus, indirect tensile stress, water absorption and porosity of rocks with high coefficients of correlation with each other.

  • Geochemical characteristics of groundwater, based on chemical analyses of 54 water samples, differ among main rocks of Haman formation, Panyawoel formation, andesite and granite in Daegu area in relation to mineralogical and chemical compositions of the rocks. Concentrations of most solutes are higher in groundwaters of Haman and Panyawoel formations than in those of andesite and granite. High concentrations of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ in groundwaters of the sedimentary rocks result mainly from reaction of $CO_2$-charged water with calcite and weathered feldspars. Average groundwaters in the sedimentary rocks are oversaturated with respect to calcite. Major types of groundwaters are hard $Ca(HCO_3)_2$ and $CaSO_2-CaCl_2$ with hardness of 442 mg/l for Haman formation and 275 mg/l for Panyawoel formation whereas they are soft $Ca(HCO_3)_2$ with hardness 35 mg/I for andesite and 39 mg/I for granite. $Ca(HCO_3)_2$ type results mainly from calcite-dissolution and $CaSO_4-CaCl_2$ from pyrite and partly from domestic pollutants. $CaSO_4-CaCl_2$ type may indicate that groundwaters in the sedimentary rocks are more evolved geochemically than those in the igneous rocks, but it is not obvious because the type might be affected by pyrie dissolution and domestic pollutions. Acid rain is buffered by active calcite in the sedimentary rocks. In the igneous rocks acid rain might react with gibbsite and other forms of $Al(OH)_3$ that might have accumulated as weathering products of primary silicates, and is buffered.

  • To analyze the behavioral characteristics of rocks on indirect tests and uniaxial compressive strength, researchers have investigated 1417 pieces of rock block, which include igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks in Korea. The same behavioral characteristics have been shown in every type of sedimentary rock and in the same species of rock in the case of Brazilian strength application. This suggests that correlations of rocks for geological considerations can lead to high reliability of the experimental results in case of an indirect method.

  • The distribution and size of sandy beaches along eastern Korea has a close relationship with the presence of granite rocks. In general, elongated and wide beaches with abundant sands are likely to develop along the coasts where granitic basic rocks comprise the dominant geology or where a large amount of sands are supplied by streams from inland granitic rocks. Small sandy beaches, in contrast, appear in non-granitic rocks (i.e., under sedimentary and/or metamorphic geology). Hence, large beaches are observed continuously along the shore of Gangwon-do, of which coasts consist predominantly of granitic geology. Such continuity declines from Samcheok city to Pohang city. The rock of Gyeonbuk-do is commonly known as sedimentary, deposited between the late Triassic and the early Tertiary Periods. Because few sands are supplied from the upstream areas, sandy beaches unlikely develop along the coasts of the province, only showing a sporadic, discontinuous distribution under Bulguksa granite, granitic gneiss, and some volcanic rocks. Erosion was rarely observed in the beaches where granitic rocks are distributed, whereas merely five beaches seemed to have undergone some level of erosion in non-granitic regions. This is presumably because a larger amount of sands than that which had been eroded away was replenished in areas under granitic geology, while under non-granitic geology having a deficit in sands, no large sandy beaches had formed at first.

  • The physical and mechanical properties of the sedimentary rocks deposited in Taegu and Kyongbuk region have been measured in the laboratory and at the field. Four kinds of rocks such as the shale, the mudstone, the siltstone and the sandstone were the object of this study. In sedimentary rock joint, bedding made it impossible to extract cores for uniaxial compressive test. Some correlations between the uniaxial compressive strength and the other characteristic values such as Point load index, Schmidt hammer rebound, Brazilian strength, P-wave velocity and Absorption ratio are made. The chemical and mineral compositions are also investigated by the XRF and XRD analysis. In addition, the weathering grade of rocks are classified by the quantitative indices of Point load index, Schmidt hammer rebound and Absorption ratio.

  • Yeongsan-eupseong is located at Seongnae-ri, Yeongsan-myeon, Changnyeong-gun, Korea. We investigated the petrological features of the stone materials used for the rampart, and estimated their provenances. The stone materials consist of andesitic rocks, granitic rocks and sedimentary rocks. In the preserved rampart the andesitic rocks are relatively abundant, whereas the large number of granitic rocks are used for restoration. Chaeyaksan andesite and Chusan andesite are thought to be the source for the andesitic rocks. The original granitic rocks are of granite porphyry, and are likely to have been delivered from the near granite porphyry outcrops. On the other hand the granitic rocks used for restoration are classified to be biotite granite. The sedimentary rocks show thermally metamorphosed feature and changed to hornfels. The source for the hornfels is the contact area between the sedimentary rocks and granitic rocks near the Yeongsan-eupseong.

  • A study on mineral composition and chemical component governing of weathering process is necessary to know the weathering characteristics of sedimentary rocks. In this study, a mineral and chemical component analysis, and physical and engineering characteristic tests were conducted to find out the characteristics of sedimentary rocks in Daegu, according to the weathering degree of sedimentary rock. Test results show that the mineral composition of rock, such as Albite (Ab), Muscovite (Ms), Magenetite (Mt) and the chemical composition of $A_2O_3$, CaO, $Na_2O$, $K_2O$, MgO and so on are closely related to the weathering. Based on the test results, we illustrated the quantitative application of weathering decision for the sedimentary rocks.

  • A hydrochemical comparative study of groundwater in uraniferous sedimentary rock of the Ogcheon belt was carried out to investigate the genetic relationship between uraniferous groundwater of Daejeon area and uraniferous sedimentary rocks of the Ogcheon zone. The groundwater shows weak alkaline pH values rangingfrom 6.4 to 8.1 and low Eh values ranging from -50 to 225 mV. The groundwaters to Ca-$HCO_3$ type that shows high concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ and $HCO_3^_$ due to the dissolution of carbonate mineral in limestone. The concentration of uranium in the groundwater was measured very low below $3.2{\mu}g/L$, while it was detected as much as $1165{\mu}g/L$ in the mine waste water. The low Eh value of groundwater is one of the main causes of low uranium concentration of groundwater in uraniferous sedimentary rocks in the Ogcheon belt. It is suggested that the uranium of groundwater in granitic region of Daejeon area was not mainly provided from uraniferous sedimentary rocks in the Ogcheon belt.

  • The study is aimed to analize the spectral characteristics of igneous and sedimentary rocks in their reflectance curves obtained from CARY 17-D Spectrophotometer, and correlation between chemical complsition and HHRR data. The reflectance is higher in acidic igneous rocks, while lower in basic igneous rocks. Especially acidic plutonic rocks show sharp absorption bands at 1.4 and 1.9 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to water inclusion in felsic minerals and basic rocks a broad absoption band near 1.mu.m due to Fe$^{++}$ ion in mafic minerals. Sandstones generally have higher reflectance than siltstones and shales, and show strong absorption at 1.4 and 1.9 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Arkosic sandstones have lower reflectance at blue band due to Fe$^{+++}$ ion exsolved from feldspars. The HHRR data have a positive correlation with SiO$_2$ and $K_2$O, while they have a negative correlation with FeO and MgO.

  • Is this study, results of static pile load tests of in-situ cast piles in weak or uncemented sedimentary rock layers have been analyzed and presented. Consdierations on the characteristics of soils sedimentary rocks have been made. From the measurements of strain gauges and extensometers the relationship of unit skim friction versus displacement and that of unit end bearing versus displacement have been obatined to verity the characteristics of bearing capacity of this uncemented sedimentary rock layers. Also, a comparison has been made between ultimate skin friction in compression and tension.
