Samples were collected from both places including the coastal area within the height of 5 m above the mean sea level (msl) (DH) and the top of the coastal terrace of 10-15 m msl (KS) high in Gwangseungri, Gochanggun, Korea. To find the origin of the deposit in the coastal area, granulometric analysis and geochemical analysis were performed. The result showed that the DH samples were originated from the reddish soils overlaying weathered bedrock which presented gradual change of chemical composition from the bottom toward the top. Clay minerals were found from the DH samples. These results concluded that the DH samples were found as in-situ weathered materials. The KS samples were originated from the soil layer covering gravel layer at the foot slope of the hill along the coast. The KS samples contained different chemical compositions from the DH. It is inferred that some of this layer was disturbed or experienced the influx of foreign material. The particle size of the KS samples was different from those found on the beach. The particle size of lower parts of KS site was finer than that on the beach, but the particle size of middle part of the site was coarser than that on the beach. The sorting of the KS site was poorer than that on the beach. Thus, it is inferred that some parts of the layer were formed by short-lived high energy event rather than sustained and continuous action of tidal currents and/or waves. Analysis using an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) method showed that the burial age of samples from KS site were found 0.65-0.71 ka. Though the characteristics of the sediment layer and forming event in this area should be further studied, it can be inferred that this sedimentary layer formed by coastal flooding with storm.
This study was conducted for evaluation the geological, physical, and chemical properties of domestic sand by analyzing about 4,800 quality data of natural sand from river and land area surveyed until 2023 through the aggregate resource survey conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The average depth of the Quaternary unconsolidated sedimentary layer in Korea, which includes a sand layer, is about 10m (maximum depth 66m). The thickness of the sand layer within the sedimentary layer is most dominant in the range of 0.5m to 4.0m. This accounts for about 70% of the entire sand layer. In the sand layer, the ratio of sand, gravel, and clay is 60:20:10. Regardless of the provenance or geology, the sand is mainly composed of quartz, plagioclase, and K-feldspar, and the minor minerals are muscovite, biotite, chlorite, magnetite, epidote. The sand includes in 45~75% of quartz, 5~20% of plagioclase and K-feldspar, each other. And other minor minerals are included in 10%. The average grain size of sand is 0.5mm to 1.0mm, which accounts for 44% of sand samples. The water absorption rate and soundness are estimated to be suitable for aggregate quality standard in almost all sand, and the absolute dry density is suitable for 66%.

From the course of screening of useful enzyme producing microorganism from marine sedimentary layer, we isolated 2 lipase producing strains and their lipase producing activities were tested. 16S rDNA sequence analysis showed that they were Gram-positive bacteria grouped on Janibacter sp. An excellent lipase producing strain, Janibacter sp. LI-68 and J. sp. LI-80 identified by 16S rDNA analysis and biochemical methods (BIOLOG), was further studied its lipase producing characteristics. The optimum initial pH, temperature and the optimum cultral time for the enzyme production on MA medium were 8, $30{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ and 96 h, respectively.

In this study, protease-producing bacteria were isolated from the marine sedimentary layer in coastal Jeju. We isolated 2 protease producing strains (SK-2 and SK-125) and tested their protesase producing activities. Gram staining and BIOLOG of isolated strains revealed that strains SK-2 and SK-125 belong to Bacillus and Pseudoalteromonas families, respectively. The 16S rDNA nucleotide sequences analyses of the isolated strains showed 99% sequence homology with those of Bacillus sp. and Pseudoalteromonas sp.; therefore, the isolated strains SK-2 and SK-125 were named Bacillus sp. SK-2 and Pseudoalteromonas sp. SK-125, respectively. The optimum conditions for the cell growth of protease activities were obtained when the both isolates were cultured at $30^{\circ}C$, 96 hrs and pH $7{\sim}8$.
Song-Do international city is the area developed in large-scale land reclamation. Song-Do area consists of reclamation layer, sedimentary layer(loose silt, soft clay and sand alternating) and residual layer from the ground surface. Therefore, using pile foundation is inevitable to build structures safely. In this area, driven PHC piles have been generally constructed in terms of environmental and economic conditions. As a result of analyzing 4 sites in Song-Do district 5 and 7 recently, the method of driving pile has many problems because of existence of rigid soil in sedimentary layer and installation of more than 30m piles. In this case, when installing piles by drive after pre-boring up to appropriate depth, the results of constructability analysis were very good. And in the economic efficiency, although 4% of construction cost rose, it was a very slight increase in comparison with improvement of workability. In the case of the stability, more than 70% compared to the allowable stress of piles was satisfied through the load test. As a result, when PHC piles is installed in Song-Do district, the proper construction method is that piles are located at bearing layer after boring rigid sand layer.

Relationships between sedimentary environments and abundance of benthic animals were examined on the deep-sea floor, the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone, in the northeast equatorial Pacific Ocean. Specimens were collected using a box corer at 8 stations by sieving through 0.3 mm mesh screen. Sediments showed finer grain size ranged from 5.63 to $7.97{\varphi}$, 83.1% of mean porosity, 1.81 kPa of mean shear strength and organic carbon content in sediment ranged from 0.97 to $1.87\;mg/cm^3$. Manganese nodules covered on the bottom layer from 4 to 57% of coverages. A total of 26 faunal groups in 6 phyla was sampled and comprised 1,467 individuals. Mean biomass were calibrated to 0.5 gWWt/$0.06\;m^2$. Small-sized animals including foraminiferans and nematods were dominated among the faunal group which comprised 49.1% (892 ind.) and 11.5% (320 ind.), respectively. In SPI-analysis, vertical bio-disturbance marks were not observed except to Beggiatoa-type bacterial mats. As the results of relationship between environments and benthos, abundance of benthic animals, especially nematode, showed only a negative correlation to the coverage of nodules, and any other sedimentary factors analyzed in this study were rarely affected to the spatial distribution of benthic animals.
In this study, we propose a joint inversion method, using genetic algorithms, to determine the shear-wave velocity structure of deep sedimentary layers from receiver functions and surface-wave phase velocity. Numerical experiments with synthetic data indicate that the proposed method can avoid the trade-off between shear-wave velocity and thickness that arises when inverting the receiver function only, and the uncertainty in deep structure from surface-wave phase velocity inversion alone. We apply the method to receiver functions obtained from earthquake records with epicentral distances of about 100 km, and Rayleigh-wave phase velocities obtained from a microtremor array survey in the Kanto Plain, Japan. The estimated subsurface structure is in good agreement with the previous results of seismic refraction surveys and deep borehole data.
The coarse deposit with a lower mud content adjacent to the shelf of the southern East Sea is probably a "relict" sediment deposited in response to a lower stand of sea level during the Pleistocene. The sediment that developed on the slope and in the deep sea was river-borne primarily and was secondarily reworked or redistributed by the Tsushima Warm Current from the East China Sea. The clay mineralogy of the area suggests various sources of fine-grained sediment from adjacent rivers, the Korea Strait, volcanic material from Ulleung Island, and the Japan coast. Massive sand, bioturbated mud, homogeneous mud, and laminated mud were the dominant facies found in the core sediments from the study area. The massive sand was mainly volcanic ash from an eruption on Ulleung Island (9300 yr BP) and consisted of colorless pumiceous glass and a black scoriaceous type. The sedimentation rates on the slope, based on the Ulleung-Oki ash layer, were about 10cm/ky higher than in the basin. Other than the coarse-grain sediment, the mean size of the fine sediment dominating the bioturbated and homogeneous muds in the basin and the laminated mud on the slope was 6-10 phi. This indicates a difference in the major sedimentary process: hemipelagic sedimentation in the Ulleung Basin and mass flow deposition, such as turbidite, on the slope of the southern East Sea.
A high-resolution seismic profile acquired across the middle part of the Pungam Basin, one of the Cretaceous sedimentary basins in Korea, has been interpreted to delineate subsurface geological structures. Boundary faults, intrusive bodies, and unconformity surfaces are identified on the seismic section. Basin fills are divided into five depositional units (Units I, II, III, IV, and V in descending order). The normal faults were formed by transtentional movement along a sinistral strike-slip fault zone. Unconsolidated sediments, a weathered layer, and sedimentary layers overly the Precambrian gneiss. The granite body intruded at the southeastern part contacts the adjacent sedimentary rocks by a near-vertical fault. Granitic intrusions caused tectonic fractures and normal faults of various sizes. An andesitic intrusive body indicates post-depositional magmatic intrusions. Continuous strike-slip movements have deformed basin-filling sediments (Units I and II).

Sand deposit with shell units is exposed in Hasa-ri, Yeonggwang-gun, Jeonnam province. We investigated the characteristics of sand sediment topography in the Yeonggwang coastal area to collect evidence of the paleo-environmental change. We performed analysis on particle characteristics, chemical composition, and the age of deposition of sediments. The deposit comprise moderately well sorted medium and fine sand ($1.00{\sim}2.19{\varphi}$). Various sedimentary structures can be observed. Geochemical characteristics change by depth and the degree of variation with depth is small. The results obtained from OSL dating show that sand layers below shell units are deposited 0.32-0.43 ka. As the elevation of the shell unit far mean high water levels or highest high water level, the extensive shell layers could only have been deposited during storm surge conditions. Aeolian processes are discounted due to the size of clasts and the location at which they occur. Results of age dating of the surrounding deposits indicate shell deposits formed after around 300 years age. There is a distinct difference between sedimentary layers including dark brown-black layer. The sedimentary characters such as particle size and geochemistry show difference with depth. It is presumed that depositional environmental in Hasa-ri has changed several times before. This study is expected to contribute to finding an evidence about occurrence of storm surges.
