  • In Korea, total sediment discharge of a river has been estimated simply by using certain sediment transport formulas including, among others, Einstein's formula. Those formular, however, are known not to be reliable enough for the result calculated by them to be used directly to river planning and management. Therefore, the study used the Modified Einstein Procedure to the estimation of total sediment discharge, because this method is reliable estimated by measurement. Here, measurement of sediment discharge used depth integrating method. The major results obtained from the study for estimation by depth integrating method of sediment discharge in Naeseong stream are as follow; 1 The sedeiment characteristics of Naeseong stream are; The distribution of sediment grain size shows that silt and clay are 55% and sand is 45%. and the bed load sediment grain size is constituted that sand contained with the grain size from O.062mm to 2.0mm is 80% 2. The sediment rating formulas derived from the regression analysis between the sediment discharge and flow discharge are; Seogpo-Gyo : Qs=$0.017 \times 10^{-4} Q^{2.352}$, where discharge is l0cms $0.074 \times 10^{-4} Q^{2.066}$, where discharge is l0cms

  • A method is presented which enables easily the computation of the suspended sediment discharge as the mean sediment concentration and mean flow velocity. This method has significant advantages over the traditional method, which principally depend on a set of measured concentration data. The method is based on both a new sediment concentration and mean sediment concentration equations which have been derived from the entropy concept used in statistical mechanics and information theory: (1) The sediment concentration distribution equations derived, are capable of describing the variation of the concentration in the vertical direction. (2) The mean concentration equation derived, is capable of calculating easily the mean concentration by using only one measured concentration in open channel. The present study mainly addresses the following two subjects : (1) new sediment concentration and mean sediment concentration equations are derived from the entropy concept : (2) An efficient and useful method of suspended sediment-discharge measurements is developed which can facilitate the estimation of suspended sediment-discharge in open channel. Flume and laboratory data are used to carry out the research task outlined above. An efficient method for determining the suspended sediment-discharge in the open channel has been developed. The method presented also is efficient and applicable in estimating the sediment transport in rivers and the sediment deposit in the reservoirs, and can drastically reduce the time and cost of sediment measurements.

  • It is essential to obtain periodic sediment discharge data in a river in order to minimize problems that may arise from the erosion, transport, and deposition of sediment. However, it is difficult to estimate sediment discharge by the sediment discharge measurement plan in Korea at present, and empirical fomulas or numerical models are used to replace them. This paper has applied the K-DRUM model, a grid-based rainfall-runoff-sediment model, to estimate sediment discharge and ensure the continuity of the data in the watershed. Discharge and sediment load in 17 watersheds were estimated and the applicability of the model was analyzed through comparisons with measured data. For quantitative evaluation, NSE, PBIAS and RSR items were used, and discharge results reflected the tendency of rainfall and showed high statistical value. In case of sediment discharge, the soil erosion process of the watershed is physically well reflected. When the calibration was performed using the measure data, the applicability seems to be excellent in estimating the continuous sediment discharge data in the real watershed.

  • To estimate the sediment discharge controlled by sediment-filled check-dam and thereby enhancing factor for check-dam design and dredging criteria, we surveyed slope failures and stream-bed fluctuation caused by geomorphic disturbances (i.e., landslides and debris flows) in Inje, Gangwondo. In general, check-dams play roles for restraining and controlling sediment discharge within a section under the design equilibrium gradient and a section under the design flood gradient, respectively. The results in this study showed same pattern: that is, the closed type check-dam, which has a design restraint sediment discharge of $2,111m^3$, estimated to control a sediment discharge of $3,996m^3$ in the stream section within 250 m right upper area immediately after the disturbances occurred in 2006. As a result, a design control sediment discharge of the check-dam was larger than its design restraint sediment discharge. This represents that the check-dam is still having an own function for controlling sediment discharge although it exceeded the designed capacity by the sediment discharged from upstream during the disturbances. Our finding suggests that the sediment discharge controlling of check-dam may need to be evaluated separately from its sediment discharge restraint. Currently, the country, however, does not consider the design control (or restraint) sediment discharges, based on the actual field survey, as criteria for check-dam design and/or dredging work. Therefore, the accumulation of the quantitative data is required to support that check-dam has functions for both restraining and controlling sediment discharge. This would be a way to develop our erosion control technology to the scientific technology equipped with a more objective and systematic aspects.

  • Sediment discharge by rainfall runoff affects water quality in rivers such as turbid water, eutrophication. In order to solve various problems caused by soil loss, it is important to establish a sediment management plan for watersheds and rivers in advance. However, there is a lack of sediment data available for estimating sediment discharge in ungauged basins.. Thus, reasonable research is very important to evaluate and predict the sediment discharge quantitatively. In this study, cluster analysis was conducted to classify gauged watersheds into hydrologically homogeneous groups based on the watershed characteristics. Also, this study suggests a method to efficiently predict the sediment discharge for ungauged basins by developing and evaluating the SDR equations based on the PA-SDR module. As the result, the SDR equations for the classified watersheds were derived to predict the most reasonable sediment discharge of ungauged basins with 0.24 % ~ 10.89 % errors. It was found that the optimal parameters for the gauged basins reflect well characteristic of sediment movement. SDR equations proposed in this study will be available for estimating sediment discharge on ungauged basins. Also it is possible to utilize establishing the appropriate sediment management plan for integrated management of watershed and river in Korea.

  • In this study, sediment pass-through (SPT) from the Sangju Weir and Gumi Weir in the Nakdong River is analyzed numerically using CCHE2D. Sediment delivery is analyzed to predict the sediment discharge rate in the Sangju Weir and Gumi Weir. The sediment discharge from the Sanju Weir is 4,381 tons in the inflow of $3,857m^3/s$, which are 2 year frequency discharge, for 48 hours, and the sediment discharge is 2,766 tons in the inflow of $1,500m^3/s$. The maximum sediment delivery occurs in the immediate downstream of the weir. The sediment discharge from the Gumi Weir is 3,216 tons in the inflow of $5,400m^3/s$, which are 2 year frequency discharge, for 48 hours, and the sediment discharge is 73 tons in the inflow of $3,857m^3/s$. The maximum sediment delivery occurs in the weir. Therefore, the effectiveness of sediment delivery is high in the condition of the 2 year frequency discharge and the gate in the weirs fully are opened.

  • This study is carried out to estimate the rate of sediment transportation both to measure the amount of suspended and bedload sediment that moves on or near the river bed and passes through the cross section of a river in unit time, with suspended and bed load samplers used for the Milyang river and to determine the most satisfactory and convenient formula of some formulas for sediment discharge by comparing the measured rate with the calculated rate. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1) The interrelationship (1) between the total discharge and the total sediment discharge (2) between discharge and suspended sediment load and (3) between discharge and bed load in the Milyang river are (1) i) 4$\leq$Q$\leq$100 C.M.S. Qr=0. 00272 Q0.70 (kg/sec) ii) 150$\leq$Q$\leq$800 C.M.S. Qr=0. 4807 Q0.46 (kg/sec) (2) Qs~=0. 07576 Q1.02 (kg/sec) (3) QB=0. 00957 Q0.44 (kg/sec) 2) The rate of suspended sediment load to total sediment discharge is found to be about; 99%. The suspended load is shown to be almost wash load which consists of silt and clay. 3) The relation between the total discharge and the suspended sediment load that are measured at three medium and small rivers in Korea is Qs=0. 13831 Q0.97 (kg/sec) 4) Brown's formula is determined to be the most convenient formula for application and comparison with observed data obtained for the Milyang river.

  • Sediment discharge by long-term runoff in the Nakdong River watershed should be predicted for the maintenance and management of the Nakdong River newly changed by the four major river restoration project. The data establishment by the analysis of runoff and sediment discharge using the long-term watershed model is necessary to predict possible problems by incoming sediments and to prepare countermeasures for the maintenance and management. Therefore, sediment discharges by long-term runoff in the main points of the Nakdong River were calculated using SWAT(soil and water assessment tool) model and the relations and features between rainfall, runoff, and sediment discharge were analyzed in this study. As a result of sediment discharge calculation in the main points of the Nakdong River and tributaries, the sediment discharge at the outlet of the Naesung Stream was greater than the Jindong Station in the Lower Nakdong River from 1999 to 2008 except the years with low precipitation. The sediment discharge at the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage (NREB) was corresponding to 20% of the Jindong Station which is located about 80 km upstream from NREB.

  • The objective of this study is to suggest the proper sediment transport equation and short and long-term bed change for planning and implementing the river management in Korea. To analyze total sediment discharge and short and long-term bed change, existing sediment transport equations, HEC-RAS 4.1 and CCHE2D numerical models were applied in urban and mountainous rivers. The results of this study are as followings; Firstly, the modified Einstein equation showed the most appropriate result for the estimation of total sediment discharge in the local rivers. Secondly, The stage-discharge relation curve and the discharge-total sediment discharge relation curve were suggested to examine the characteristics of river bed change. Finally, it is founded that river bed change of mountainous river has occurred greater than that of the urban river, and the river bed of urban river now tends to be stabilized on the whole.

  • In this study, flow-sediment discharge characteristics and relationships are estimated for the Cheonggyecheon basin, newly restored in 2005. Flow and sediment discharge measurement is performed on Ogansugyo, Majanggyo 2 and Yongdugyo during the rainy seasons in 2005-2006. The parameters of Clark UH are estimated using measured data, and sediment rating curves are derived by using grading and concentration analysis. Concentration time and storage coefficient of Clark UH are estimated 0.5 hr and 0.63 hr for Majanggyo 2, and 0.4 hr and 0.45 hr for Yongdugyo, respectively. Grain size of sediments are composed of fine silt to fine sand (0.008-0.25mm) based on the sediment grain size classification (Lane, 1947). Flow-sediment relationships derived by using concentration analysis shows that sediment discharge has no obvious relationship with flow discharge.
