The Framework for Cost Reduction of User Authentication Using Implicit Risk Model (내재적 리스크 감지 모델을 사용한 사용자 인증 편의성 향상 프레임워크)

  • Traditional explicit authentication, which requires awareness of the user's authentication process, is a burden on the user, which is one of main reasons why users tend not to employ authentication. In this paper, we try to reduce such cost by employing implicit authentication methods, such as biometrics and location based authentication methods. We define the 4-level security assurance model, where each level is mapped to an explicit authentication method. We implement our model as an Android application, where the implicit authentication methods are touch-stroke dynamics-based, face recognition based, and the location based authentication. From user experiment, we could show that the authentication cost is reduced by 14.9% compared to password authentication-only case and by 21.7% compared to the case where 6-digit PIN authentication is solely used.

  • The environment of the Internet provides an efficient communication of the things which are connected. While internet and online service provide us many valuable benefits, online services offered and accessed remotely through internet also exposes us to many different types of security threats. Most security threats were just related to information leakage and the loss of authentication on client-server environment. In 2016, Ahmed et al. proposed an efficient lightweight remote user authentication protocol. However, Kang et al. show that it's scheme still unstable and inefficient. It cannot resist offline identity guessing attack and cannot provide session key confirmation property. Moreover, there is some risk of biometric information's recognition error. In this paper, we propose an improved scheme to overcome these security weaknesses by storing secret data in device. In addition, our proposed scheme should provide not only security, but also efficiency since we only use hash function and XOR operation.

  • Cloud computing is cost-effective in terms of system configuration and maintenance and does not require special IT skills for management. Also, cloud computing provides an access control setting where SSO is adopted to secure user convenience and availability. As the SSO user authentication structure of cloud computing is exposed to quite a few external security threats in wire/wireless network integrated service environment, researchers explore technologies drawing on distributed SSO agents. Yet, although the cloud computing access control using the distributed SSO agents enhances security, it impacts on the availability of services. That is, if any single agent responsible for providing the authentication information fails to offer normal services, the cloud computing services become unavailable. To rectify the environment compromising the availability of cloud computing services, and to protect resources, the current paper proposes a security policy that controls the authority to access the resources for cloud computing services by applying the authentication policy of user authentication agents. The proposed system with its policy of the authority to access the resources ensures seamless and secure cloud computing services for users.

  • Both security enhancement in wireless and fast access for mobility are required to employ wireless LAN in ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems). However, for the case of employing IEEE 802.11i security standard, it is known that the user authentication procedure of IEEE 802.1x and 4-way handshake procedure for stronger security enforcement may not be suitable for ITS due to its large delay. In this paper, we propose fast authentication method to resolve the above authentication delay problem, and verify its performance via simulation analysis.

  • Password authentication schemes (PAS) are the most common mechanisms used to ensure secure communication in open networks. Mathematical-based cryptographic authentication schemes such as factorization and discrete logarithms have been proposed and provided strong security features, but they have the disadvantage of high computational and message transmission costs required to construct passwords. Fairuz et al. therefore argued for an improved cryptographic authentication scheme based on two difficult fixed issues related to session key consent using the smart card scheme. However, in this paper, we have made clear through security analysis that Fairuz et al.'s protocol has security holes for Privileged Insider Attack, Lack of Perfect Forward Secrecy, Lack of User Anonymity, DoS Attack, Off-line Password Guessing Attack.

  • There are several possible places which are accessible in many buildings and facilities, various types of systems have been utilized such as access control or surveillance depending on the purpose. Especially if security is important, it must go through the various authentication procedures when people can access. Until now many access control systems have been proposed and developed, they are applied and utilized to companies which security is needed. However, as time passes the problems with existing access control systems occur or the vulnerabilities related to access control are reported, as technology advances. The solution to this, we propose authentication technology related to access control using LED-QR tag.

  • In this paper, we introduce an efficient and security-enhanced re-authentication and key exchange protocol for IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs using Re-authentication Period. We introduce a low computational complexity re-authentication and key exchange procedure that provides robustness in face of cryptographic attacks. This procedure accounts for the wireless media limitations, e.g. limited bandwidth and noise. We introduce the Re-authentication Period that reflects the frequency that the re-authentication procedure should be executed. We provide the user with suitable guidelines that will help in the determination of the re-authentication period.

  • Smartphones, are currently equipped with high-performance hardware to process large amounts of data and provide most of the functions provided by desktop PCs. In addition, the smartphones enable quick user authentication through biometric information collected from embedded sensors. However, the biometric authentication method is sometimes rejected due to social and cultural environment, security vulnerabilities, and misrecognition rate. Thus, conventional authentication methods such as PIN and pattern authentication are still mainly used. Consider the latest foldable and bendable smartphones. These devices may be vulnerable to social engineering attacks as they use conventional authentication methods without considering their form factors. In this study, therefore, we propose an authentication method using partial elements of PIN and pattern authentication as a way to increase the security of the conventional authentication methods and consider the recent form factors. According to the performance evaluation results, our method provides improved safety compared to the conventional methods.

  • We follow the promising recent results of deploying the public key cryptography in sensor networks. Recent results have shown that the public key algorithms are computationally feasible on the typical sensor nodes. However, once the public key cryptography is brought to the sensor network, security services such like key authentication will be critically required. In this paper we investigate the public key authentication problem in the sensor network and provide several authentication protocols. Our protocols are mainly based on the non-solvable overhearing in the wireless environment and a distributed voting mechanism. To show the value of our protocols, we provide an extensive analysis of the used resources and the resulting security level. As well, we compare our work with other existing works. For further benefit of our protocols, we list several additional applications in the sensor network where our protocols provide a sufficient authentication under the constrained resources.

  • Cloud computing is a system which efficiently utilizes resources. In this paper, we propose 2-factor authentication system combing PKI, ID_PW and location information. The proposed method improve the security of hybrid cloud systems and manage resources more safely.
