  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to suggest the construction and quality control method for the re-repair of a deteriorated partial depth repair for sections of Portland cement concrete pavement. METHODS : An experimental construction was conducted to extend the repair width for removing an existing repair section. A removal method was used to ensure early performance for a deteriorated partial depth repair section. Bond strength and split tensile strength were measured at the near vertical interface layer between the existing pavement and repair material. The area was analyzed for various conditions such as the extended repair area and the removing method of the existing repair section. RESULTS : As a result of analysis of bond strength and split tensile strength, the bonding performance of a milling removed section was improved over a cutting and hand breaker removed section. The bond strength was analyzed to increase slightly as the extended repair width for removing the existing repair section increased. The split tensile strength did not show a clear relationship to an increased extended repair width of an existing removed repair section. CONCLUSIONS : The milling removal method should be applied in the removal of existing deteriorated partial depth repair sections. The extended repair width for a re-repair section should be wider than the existing partial depth repair with at least a 75-mm length and width for the bond strength and the split tensile strength.

  • The cement concrete pavements are designed twenty years of performance life in Korea. At the present time, some expressways have been elapsed seventy percent of performance life which are detecting local failures. The most repair methods using to repair failures are partial depth repair and full section repair. These methods are most important bonding strength between rapid curing materials and substrate concrete pavements. This study was performed to evaluate bonding strength of the composites section made of rapid curing material and substrate concrete pavements. The pull-out tester was used to test bonding strength for the composites section made of each materials. In the results of the test, the bonding strength values of the epoxy mortar and acrylic mortar are higher than those of the other materials. The performance life of repaired section is affected by various factor. The bonding strength of bonded composites section may be affect the performance life, significantly.

  • PURPOSES : The evaluation of the pavement condition of the asphalt concrete pavement of No. 2 runway of Inchon International Airport through PMS, a supporting system for making a decision of pavement, maintenance and repair, was made, and the proper time for repair according to the PCI reduction rate was suggested. METHODS : By comparing and analyzing the evaluation results of pavements built in 2009, 2010, 2011, PCI change in each facility (No. 2 runway, C parallel taxiway, connection taxiway) was calculated. By applying the calculated change to PCI deduction rate model, the pavement condition of the target sections was estimated, and then the necessary section and time for repair were chosen. RESULTS : After careful consideration of the time for pavement and maintenance, based on the result of PCI prediction, it was estimated that the southern takeoff and landing section of No. 2 runway was required to be repaired in 2012; connection taxiway in 2013; and C parallel taxiway in 2014; however, the section which is the main moving route of connection taxiway and C parallel taxiway was needed to be repaired in 2012. CONCLUSIONS : For maintenance and repair of airport pavements, the optimal alternative should be chosen by considering economics and operability, via examining the time for repair and the aspect of management all together on the basis of this study.

  • This study experimentally evaluated the performance of damaged section which was repaired using polymer materials in reinforced flexural flexural members Six different materials, two types of polymer, two types of polymer-cement and two types of cement, were used by means of injection method on prepacked concrete and spray mortar patching method. As results, the repair works could be done easily and surfaces of the repaired section were smooth.

  • In this study, compressive strength and adhesion strength were measured as repair materials to evaluate the mechanical and electrical properties of compression and shear specimens with self-sensing repair materials. As a result of the experiment, the strength improvement rate of the compression test specimen was higher than the section enlargement area ratio, but the shear test specimen did not show an improvement in strength as much as the section enlargement area ratio. Compression experiments under load showed high correlation between FCR-Strain and FCR-Stress, confirming self-sensing performance. However, the shear test did not show as much correlation as the compression test. Accordingly, it is judged that the self-sensing repair material is suitable for the compression member on which the compression load acts in the building.

  • There have been a lot of studies about repair & strengthening of the concrete structure. But there has almost not been my study on section damage effect due to holes drilled out for installing additional facilities or equipment, such as rack on the wall of building or underground culvert system, plumbing system through the column or wall of it, after being occupied. This study is to find out how much the section loss due to holes will give loss of section strength. We cm determine if we repair or reinforce it completely or not, using strength loss from the hole. Hole size of diameter 3cm, 2cm, lcm, depth of 3cm, 5cm, 10cm, and position of each hole has been considered as variables of this study. It is concluded that section loss 30% results in 53% of strength damage.

  • Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANET) in the large-scale road section usually have typical characteristics of large number of vehicles and unevenly distribution over geographic spaces. These two inherent characteristics lead to the unsatisfactory performance of VANETs. This poor performance is mainly due to fragile communication link and low dissemination efficiency. We propose a novel routing mechanism to address the issue in the paper, which includes a competition-based routing discovery with priority metrics and a local routing repair strategy. In the routing discovery stage, the algorithm uses adaptive scheme to select a stable route by the priorities of routing metrics, which are the length of each hop, as well as the residual lifetime of each link. Comparisons of different ratios over link length and link stability further show outstanding improvements. In the routing repair process, upstream and downstream nodes also compete for the right to establish repair process and to remain as a member of the active route after repair. Our simulation results confirm the improved performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • Buckling capacity of compression members may change due to inadvertent changes in the member section dimensions or material properties. This may be the result of repair, modification of section properties or degradation of the material properties. In some occasions, enhancement of buckling capacity of compression members may be achieved through splicing of plates or utilization of composite materials. It is very important for a designer to predict the buckling resistance of the compression member and the important parameters that affect its buckling strength once changes in section and/or material properties took place. This paper presents an analytical approach for determining the buckling capacity of a compression member whose geometric and/or material properties has been altered resulting in a multi-step non-uniform section. This analytical solution accommodates the changes and modifications to the material and/or section properties of the compression member due to the factors mentioned. The analytical solution provides adequate information and a methodology that is useful during the design stage as well as the repair stage of compression members. Three case studies are presented to show that the proposed analytical solution is an efficient method for predicting the buckling strength of compression members that their section and/or material properties have been altered due to splicing, coping, notching, ducting and corrosion.

  • Concrete structures need repair and rehabilitation due to functional deficiencies such as cracks, scaling and spalling. Loss of section such as spalling is caused by corrosion of reinforcing bar, fire, temperature change, poor design and etc. This study aims to examine the characteristics of polymer(epoxy)and polymer-cement(latex) for repair materials and to provide the proper repair scheme through static and fatigue tests. Totally 12 beams were tested. Results from static and fatigue tests of beams repaired with polymer and polymer-cement were compared.

  • Since many structures in the sea environment are damaged by chloride, appropriate repair strategy is required. Therefore in the paper, optimum period for the RC structure's repair is calculated with consideration of economic efficiency. Moreover, when the concrete members are repaired with the other material such as polymer mortar forr section restoration, their expected service life also calculated to predict more accurate repair period during the life span.
