Buckling capacity of compression members may change due to inadvertent changes in the member section dimensions or material properties. This may be the result of repair, modification of section properties or degradation of the material properties. In some occasions, enhancement of buckling capacity of compression members may be achieved through splicing of plates or utilization of composite materials. It is very important for a designer to predict the buckling resistance of the compression member and the important parameters that affect its buckling strength once changes in section and/or material properties took place. This paper presents an analytical approach for determining the buckling capacity of a compression member whose geometric and/or material properties has been altered resulting in a multi-step non-uniform section. This analytical solution accommodates the changes and modifications to the material and/or section properties of the compression member due to the factors mentioned. The analytical solution provides adequate information and a methodology that is useful during the design stage as well as the repair stage of compression members. Three case studies are presented to show that the proposed analytical solution is an efficient method for predicting the buckling strength of compression members that their section and/or material properties have been altered due to splicing, coping, notching, ducting and corrosion.
In this paper, the cross-section properties of thin-walled beam are calculated through KSec2D in consist of Saint-Venant theory. To investigate tendency increasing the thickness, we analysis cross-section using isotropic material. In the asymmetric cross-section, we investigate effect caused cross-section properties accompanied increasing the thickness. The structural properties such as bending stiffness, tosion stiffness per area of each cross-section in three cases is compared through increasing thickness. The warping displacement calculated by KSed2D is modeled by CATIA. In order to show that warping influence the cross-section, the warping shape modeled CATIA is printed 3D printer.

In this paper described is the software developed to calculate the physical properties of arbitrary section shape. The software consists of arbitrary section display module(ASDM) and section property calculation module(SPCM). ASDM defines and displays the shape of arbitrary section and SPCM calculates its properties such as area, centroid, moment of inertia, torsional constant, etc.. In many cases, calculation of section properties is not easy because user has to define the vertex coordinates which are difficult to do so in the case of arbitrary section. In the developed software, however, since user is asked to define only points of central lines and thickness of arbitrary section, the calculattion task of arbitrary section is very effective.
Natural frequencies of the transverse vibration of beams with step change in cross-section are obtained by using the asymptotic closed form solution. This closed form solution is found by using WKB method under the assumption of slowly varying properties, such as mass, cross-section, tension etc., along the beam length. However, this solution is found to be still very accurate even in the case of large variation in cross-section and tension. Therefore, this result can be easily applied to many engineering problems.

The objective of this research was to evaluate physical and mechanical properties of three species of Styrax woods from North Tapanuli in Indonesia. The woods were more than 15 years old. Physical properties such as specific gravity, green moisture content, and volume shrinkage were determined by the procedures based on BS-373 standard for small clear specimen. Furthermore, mechanical properties, including modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, compression parallel to grain and hardness were also tested according to the standard. Along the stem direction, the edge section had better properties compared with those near the pith section. And the base section had also better properties than upper section. Based on the specific gravity, all of the Styrax woods in this research were classified into III-IV strength classes. A good dimensional stability was demonstrated by the value of the tangential and radial ratio which reached one. With the consideration of the mechanical properties, Styrax woods were suitable use for raw materials of light construction, furniture and handy craft.

As a series of the studies of thin rubber coated fabrics, the experiments were concentrated on the investigation of the physical properties of the surface and back coated fabrics with natural and synthetic rubber. Cotton poplin and nine other cotton shootings were used as a base fabric and both sides of fabric, face and back, were coated by means of topping or spreading process. The physical properties of finished material were broadly investigated especially in view of the quality requirements of the poncho.
A general analytical model for thin-walled composite beams with an arbitrary open/(or/and) closed cross section and arbitrary laminate stacking sequence i.e., symmetric, anti-symmetric as well as un-symmetric with respect to the mid plane of the laminate, is developed in the first paper. All the mechanical properties, mechanical centre of gravity and mechanical shear centre of the cross section are defined in the function of the geometry and the material properties of the section. A program "fungen" and "clprop" are developed in Fortran to compute all the mechanical properties and tested for various isotropic sections first and compared with the available results. The locations of mechanical centre of gravity and mechanical shear centre are given with respect to the fibre angle variation in composite beams. Variations of bending and torsional stiffness are shown to vary with respect to the fibre angle orientations.
In order to reveal the vertical variation of physical properties in deep-sea sediments, deep-sea sediment cores were collected at 78 stations using a multiple corer in the KR5 area, one of the Korea contract areas for manganese nodule exploration, located in the northeast equatorial Pacific. Based on the color of sediments, sampled sediment cores were characterized into three lithologic units (unit 1,2, and 3). In all sediment cores, three units appear systematically; unit 1 lies at the top of cores and unit 2 and/or unit 3 appear to underlie unit 1 or alternate with unit 3. Unit 1 layer from the top of cores shows dark grayish brown to dark brown with mean thickness of 10.2cm. Unit 2 and 3 layers show very dark brown to black color and yellowish brown to brown color, respectively. According to the physical properties of the deep-sea sediment cores, sediment column can be divided into three sections. Section A $(0{\sim}15cm)$ in subbottom depth consists mostly of unit 1. Mean values of physical properties of section B $(15{\sim}30cm)$ in subbottom depth are similar to those of section C (>30 cm) in subbottom depth. However, the physical properties of section B were more variable than those of section C because of the high activity of bioturbation in section B. These results will provide valuable information for selecting suitable sites for mining manganese nodules in the Korea contract areas.
To evaluate the quality of flame-peeled chestnuts, their physical and chemical properties were analyzed. The physicochemical properties of flame-peeled chestnuts, including geometrical shape, texture and chemical composition, were compared to those of hand-peeled ones. For the flame-peeled chestnuts, some properties in heated and non-heated sections were separately analyzed. The color, texture such as springness, cohesiveness, adhesiveness, hardness and chewiness, moisture content, and reducing sugar of the heated section of the flame-peeled chestnuts were significantly different with their non-heated section. But the physicochemical properties of the non-heated section of the flame-peeled chestnuts were similar to those of the hand-peeled ones.

In this study, the flat-section monofilaments of PBT for artificial eyelashes was developed, and the physical properties of the circular cross-section of artificial eyelashes were compared and observed, and the main performance of the artificial eyelash prototype was observed through processing for artificial eyelashes. In addition, a satisfaction survey of the prototype was conducted through a survey of consumers and artificial eyelash operators. It was found that the bending stiffness value of the monofilaments increased significantly as the thickness increased. As a result of measuring the bending properties of the flat-section PBT monofilaments, the bending stiffness was significantly lower than that of the circular-section PBT specimens of the same thickness. The deformed cross-section PBT monofilaments with flat cross sections developed in this study showed a light weight factor of less than 50% compared to the existing circular cross-section PBT ones. The adhesive strength of the developed PBT artificial specimens was greater than that of the existing circular cross-section yarn. It was also observed that the curl stability over time was excellent. As a result of the consumer survey, it was possible to obtain more than 85% of positive answers in the case of consumer subjects, and it was possible to investigate that the satisfaction of the operator subjects was more than 80% compared to the existing round-section eyelashes.
