The purpose of this study was to develop and apply a framework for progression in the professional development and learning of secondary science teachers' teaching practice. The progression in the professional development was modified Pilhee Woo's framework(2010), and in the learning was developed by the researchers. The former included 6 elements and 36 aspects. The progression of each aspect was composed of five level criteria. The content validity is 96.4% and the reliability is .96. The latter was composed of another five level criteria. The content validity is 96.0% and the reliability is .95. Internet-online test and the questionnaire were administered to 203 secondary science teachers who were selected by convenience sampling. The mean level of the progression in the professional development and learning were 2.21 and 2.95. ANOVA, t-test and correlation analysis were conducted to compare differences by the characteristics of teachers. The level of the progression in the professional development and learning was significant difference according to almost all of teachers' characteristics. The level of the progression in the professional development was significantly correlated with the level of the progression in the learning.
The purpose of this study was to find out the image as science teachers recognized by pre-service science teachers. The data was collected from 312 pre-service science teachers from Kyungpook National University in Daegu and participants were asked to write about the image of science teachers they liked most and least in their secondary school years freely. The result of this research was as follows. The image as science teachers categorized 2 factors: science instructional situation, image of science teacher. Each factor was subdivided into more detailed ones. First of all, 'science instructional situation' category subdivided into lesson style, teaching-learning materials, teaching methods, and class atmosphere. In lesson style, 'experiment' and 'observation' gained the most favorable comments, and questioning-answering gained the least. In teaching-learning materials, print materials such as handouts, worksheets, reports were the most liked, and 'writing on the blackboard' was the least liked. In teaching methods, the 'detailed and systematic explanation of the theory and concepts' was preferred to rote learning and memorization lacking explanation. In class atmosphere, friendly and free atmosphere was the most preferred, and uncomfortable, boring one was the least preferred. Secondly, in 'image of the science teachers' category and 'quality as the teachers' sub-category, thoughtful and considerate teachers who respect students' personality was the most preferred. On the contrary, they didn't prefer teachers who were indifferent and humiliated students. Finally in 'characteristics of the teachers' sub-category, the participants liked clear, energetic voice, and mild expression, and they didn't like formal style, overly fancy clothes, etc. Based on the result of this study, more empirical study on the teachers' image is needed, and the thoughts of educational administrators, students, parents, and teachers should be reflected because an undesirable teacher can be advised and get opportunity to be a better teacher.

Oceanic current and circulation have played an important role as regulators of the earth's energy distribution. The science and earth science textbooks for secondary schools based on the 2015 revised curriculum included a misconception of the seasonal variation of the North Korea Cold Current (NKCC) among the currents around the Korean Peninsula. To analyze this, the contents related to the NKCC were collected in the textbooks of five middle and six high schools, and a questionnaire survey was conducted on 30 middle school science teachers. The survey consisted of questions about whether the textbook mentions the NKCC and whether there is an error in the concept of the temporal variation of the NKCC, and the teachers' free opinions related to the NKCC were collected. The textbooks suggest that the NKCC is strongest in winter, which is not consistent with scientific findings so far. In fact, there is scientific evidence that the NKCC is the strongest in the summer. In this study, the causes and processes of misconceptions were investigated. According to an analysis of the survey, most teachers had an knowledge that the NKCC is stronger in winter. These errors began with a misconception of the terms, which teachers had imprinted on their memory as firm knowledge. These misconceptions originated from the knowledge that teachers themselves acquired from their secondary school years and have long been transferred back to teachers and students without revising the misconceptions of textbooks. This situation is expected to have a seriously recurrent structure that produces students' serious misconceptions in the future. Therefore, this study summarizes existing results on the seasonal variability of the NKCC and suggests the necessity for re-education to improve teachers' professionalism and to eliminate the misconceptions of teachers and students.
The purposes of this study were to investigate perspective teachers' conceptions of liquid-state and get implications for the direction of science curriculum or professional development. The instrument was composed of seven questions focusing on aspects of liquid-state phenomena. The results showed that the participants have various alternative concepts about liquid-state. The problem revealed in almost every question was their macroscopic explanations for the phenomena. In addition, it appeared that the participants seemed to understand phenomena in terminology level, but they didn't know basic reasons or fundamental concepts about the phenomena. It is required to change the curriculum or instructional methods in secondary school and teacher education programs to anchor the scientific concepts on molecular or microscopic level.

The purpose of this study was to develop experimental modules that would enhance science the process skills of secondary school students. The modules were composed of real-life materials on the subjects of light, movement, force, water, and heat. Each module consisted of four to six activities, and provided student worksheets and teacher guides. Physics teachers were invited to a workshop specially held to identify whether these modules would befit the improvement of student science process skills. A majority of the teachers believed the modules to be valuable instructional materials which might enhance student science process skills in the Korean secondary school science classes.
The aim of this study is to explore effective teaching strategies through an investigation of the problem-solving abilities and reasons for the unsuccessful problem solving of pre-service teachers. The participants of the study were 60 pre-service teachers who were expected to teach earth science in elementary school (40) and secondary school (20). The participants had taken a course in astronomy before they took part in the present study. The instruments for the study were a paper-and-pencil test and interviews. The results demonstrated that the pre-service teachers' abilities to solve problems were low. The pre-service teachers of the elementary school were inferior to those of the secondary school in their problem solving abilities. The causes for the unsuccessful problem solving were identified as follows: (1) lack of prerequisite knowledge to understand the motions of the moon and the planets, (2) failure to represent problems based on solution principles, (3) failure to apply the knowledge acquired in one setting to another, different setting, (4) frames of reference the frameworks for everyday life situation and for earth science problem situation, and (5) rote-memorization of facts rather than understanding the cause-and-effect relationships. The above causes for unsuccessful problem solving seemed to be related to the characteristics of novice problem solvers in general and of the tasks about the motions of the moon and the planets. Suggestions are made to enhance pre-service teachers' problem solving abilities based on the result of the study.
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the level of PCK which middle school science teachers have on the concept of density and to analyze the characteristics of science teachers' content representation on the concept of density by their PCK level. For that purpose, 20 science teachers were selected and asked to answer the questionnaire on the eight aspects of CoRe. Results of this study indicated that the science teachers' PCK levels were low in general and evaluated as below average. The differences among the characteristics of science teachers' content representation by their PCK level were high in seven aspects of CoRe but the one aspect of the understanding of learner's preconception. These differences were analyzed and the patterns shown by the science teachers in eight aspects of CoRe were drawn in this study. It was also found that the characteristics drawn in eight aspects of content representation shown by the teachers whose PCK level was medium were close to those whose PCK level was low rather than high in most aspects of CoRe.

In this study, 37 elementary, middle, and high school science teachers attending graduate schools of education were surveyed about their thoughts about the difficulty of teaching science units and teaching methods to teach these units to students. After experiencing the activity of making new teaching tools using scratch, we tried to confirm the development of TPACK among the teachers. Through the questionnaire survey for elementary, secondary, and high school science teachers, we selected the unit of Planetary Movement of the Solar System as a unit that is difficult for teachers to teach. We gave them the experience of instruction on tool making process for implementing a planetary operation model using scratch. Then, based on the questionnaires and class presentations, we analyzed the change of awareness about technology introduction and the development of their TPACK. As a result, most of the teachers showed changes of perceptions related to TK, TCK, TPK; the use of programming for creating teaching materials enhances teachers' understanding of the teaching contents; the teachers were convinced that students would develop the ability to construct models that fit observational phenomena; they thought that there would be a positive educational effect in the positive domain.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the job performance hours and reasonable job performance hours of teachers working at secondary level technical vocational education institutes. This study analyzed the differences in the job performance hours and reasonable hours that have been investigated according to special subject teachers and general subject teachers. Based on Job Specifications of Teachers Working at Secondary Level Technical Vocational Education Institutes, the development of research tool was finalized, and questionnaires were used as the research tool. The results of this study are as follows. First, the total job performance hours and total reasonable job performance hours perceived by teachers working at secondary level technical vocational education institutes were found to be 2,787.8 minutes and 2,934.7 minutes respectively with a difference of 146.9 minutes. In regards to the job category-specific job performance hours, they were found to be high in the order of lesson administration, extracurricular student guidance, school affairs and administrative duties, and lesson preparation and planning, while the reasonable job performance hours were found to be high in the order of lesson administration, lesson preparation and planning, extracurricular student guidance, and school affairs and administrative duties. As for the job categories with shorter reasonable job performance hours compared to job performance hours, they were found to be lesson administration, extracurricular student guidance, and school affairs and administrative duties. In other job categories, it was found that longer job performance hours are needed. Second, the job performance hours perceived by each subject teacher from other schools, they were found to be 2,888.3 minutes for special subject teachers and 2,536.1 minutes for general subject teachers, while showing 3,021.8 minutes for special subject teachers and 2,716.8 minutes for general subject teachers regarding reasonable job performance hours. The differences between the job performance hours and reasonable job performance hours perceived by teachers from other schools were found to be 133.5 minutes for special subject teachers and 180.7 minutes for general subject teachers.
The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of Creative Geo Educamp-the thematic trips with geoscientist, donation of KIGAM's intellectual properties. It was carried out twice and each time took professional development programs for 16 hours. There were 35 secondary science teachers (2010. 7.6.-8.) and 31 elementary teachers (2010. 7.20.-22.). This program was designed to contribute the public education by using intellectual properties of KIGAM. Textbooks and kits were developed for the creative activities according to 2009 Curriculum Revision and they were donated as educational materials. The survey showed that the participants have a high satisfaction of the textbooks and kits developed. Its figures are 4.45 of secondary science teachers and 4.8 of elementary teachers out of 5 points.
