  • Through enrichment on two nutrient agars, 57 Thermus isolates were recovered from 15 hot spring samples taken from the Rehai geothermal area, Tengchong, China. Unique growth characteristics were observed when the strains were transferred from YIM14 medium to Thermus medium. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the 16S rDNA sequences of the isolates and clones from the Rehai geothermal area farmed a monophyletic group on the phylogenetic tree. A secondary structure comparison showed that their 16S rRNAs have unique secondary structure characteristics.

  • Various geological thematic maps such as grain size or ground water level maps have been generated by interpolating sparsely sampled ground survey data. When there are sampled data at a limited number of locations, to use secondary information which is correlated to primary variable can help us to estimate the attribute values of the primary variable at unsampled locations. This paper applies two multivariate geostatistical algorithms to integrate remote sensing imagery with sparsely sampled ground survey data for spatial estimation of grain size: simple kriging with local means and kriging with an external drift. High-resolution IKONOS imagery which is well correlated with the grain size is used as secondary information. The algorithms are evaluated from a case study with grain size observations measured at 53 locations in the Baramarae beach of Anmyeondo, Korea. Cross validation based on a one-leave-out approach is used to compare the estimation performance of the two multivariate geostatistical algorithms with that of traditional ordinary kriging.

  • Nine new species of genus Ircinia (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Irciniidae) from Jejudo Island, Korea are described. All of the new species are distinguished from the others reported species of Ircinia by the skeletal structure, especially massive fasciculate primary fibres. The characters of genus Ircinia have primary fibres cored with foreign debris and no cored secondary fibres. Primary fibres are not easy to distinguish from secondary fibres if they are not cored. Secondary web has perforated plate or meshed net. All new species have loosely arranged skeletal fibres network.

  • Four psammocinian species(Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Irciniidae) are described from Gageodo and Jejudo Islands, Korea. Among them, three are new species, Psammocinia rana, P. massa and P. vermins, which are very different from other recorded species. Secondary fibres of Psammocinia rana are mostly wide platelike shape with large perforation. Primary and secondary fibres of Psammocinia massa are lumped together in a thick mass through numerous areas. Psammocinia vemis is similar to P. mosulpia in skeletal structure, but differs in size of cored sands in primary fibres. The fourth species, we reclassify from Ircinia chupoensis to Psammocinia chupoensis based on more detailed observation of the skeletal structure. Ircinia only has sand cored primary fibres, while the observed species, has sand cored primary and secondary fibres.

  • About 60% of the present drugs were developed from natural products with unique chemical diversity and biological activities. Hence, discovery of new bioactive compounds from natural products is still important for the drug development. On the other hand, breakthrough made in synthetic biology has also begun to supply us with many useful compounds through manipulation of biosynthetic gene for secondary metabolites. Theoretically, this approach can also be exploited to generate new unnatural compounds by intermixing genes from different biosynthetic pathway. Considering the potential, we are studying about bioactive compounds in natural sources, as well as the biosynthesis of natural products including engineering of the secondary metabolite enzymes to make new compounds in order to construct the methodological basis of the synthetic biology. In this symposium, engineering of secondary metabolite enzymes that are involved in the biosynthesis of plant polyketides to generate new compounds in our laboratory will be mainly introduced.

  • This purpose of this study is to investigate the combustion emission characteristics on the effect of secondary air injection in combustion field of model gas turbine combustor changing excess air ratio. For this purpose, meantemperature, CO, CO2, O2 and HC concentration were measured by changing excess air ratio and secondary air injection. As a result of this study, meantemperature, CO2 emission was decreased and CO emission increased by increasing the excess air ratio of secondary air. therefore, This paper showed the effect of Secondary air injection on flame structure, combustion emission characteristics.
