Revegetation and Secondary Succession of the Burned Area in Mt. Sanseung (山城山 山火跡地의 植生再生과 二次邊의)

  • This report is an investigation of the revegetation and secondary succession in the burned area of Mt. Sanseung in Taegu region. The forest fire took place in December, 1977. The survey was conducted eight times, -three times from October 1, 1983 to October 3, the same year and five times from August 10, 1984 to August 15, the same year. The floristic compositions in the sampled sites constituted 25 kinds of vascular plants and 21 kinds in the burned area and the unburned area respectively. The biological type in both the burned and unburned areas was H-D1-R5-e type, which is generally common to other areas (Taegu, Kyungpook, Chung Buk and Kangweon areas). In the burned area dominant species were Carex humilisvar. nana, Arundinella hirata and Quercus serrata and on the other hand, in the unburned area Pinus densiflora, Carex humilis var. nana, Rhododendron mucrfonulatum var. ciliatum and Quercus serrata. The species diversity diversity index(H) and eveness index(e) of the burned area were higher than those unburned area. Degree of succession (DS) was 650 in the burned area at the 6th years after the fires and 962 in the unburned area. THe vegetation of the burned area was slowly recovered as of 1984 compared with each other. According to the analysis of the soil preperties, pH, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium were increased, but organic matter, total nitrogen and total organic carbon were decreased. It is assumed that these results were due to the forest fire.

The Secondary Vegetation of the Burned Area of a Mountain in Dangji-Dong (당지동의 산화적지의 이차식생)

  • This report is a series of the investigation of the secondary vegetation and succession at the forest fire area in Dangji-Dong of Kyungsang-pookdo province. The forest fires occurred on April 8, 1982. This investigation was carried out from June 18, 1982 to May 29, 1983 once in each season. Before to fires, the Pinus densiflora was dominant and the woody plants of understory were mainly composed of the Quercus serrata, Q. dentata, Lespedeza maritima and L. macimowiczii. Compared with the florstic composition between the unburned and burned areas after the fires, the floristic composition of unburned area comprises: 79 families, 194 genera, 223 species, 26 varieties and 6 formae (255 kinds of vascular plants). The index of similary shows 0.77 (S$\Phi$renson:1948) in this area. The analyses of the life-form compositions in the unburned and burned area show 32.9% and 29.3% in dormancy form (H), 42.4% and 37.7% in disseminule form($D_1$), 80.8% and 82.2% in radicoid form ($R_5$), and 57.7% and 61.8% in erect form(e) respectively. The biological type shows H-$D_1$-R5-e, which is common in both areas, and erect form is generally prevailing in these communities.

On the Variation of Fiber Tissues of the Paper Mulbery in Korea (닥나무 섬유(纖維)의 변이(變異)에 대하여)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the variation of fiber tissues of some paper mulberies (Broussnetia kazinoki Sieb.). Every twig was selected for variation from 1 year old to 4 years old of the paper mulberies growing in Woensung, Bounghwa, Euiryung and Wanju in Korea. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The length and the width of fiber tissue increase to old twigs. 2. In primary fiber tissue the variation of length increases considerably slowly, but on the contrary that of width increases very rapidly. 3. In the secondary fiber tissue the variation of length increases comparatively rapidly but that of width does not. 4. In order to investigate the fact shown from the contrary results on the fiber length and width between primary and secondary fibers, the authors calculated the correlation, coefficient and the results show comparatively higher possitive correlation coefficient.

The Secondary Succession and Species Diversity at the Burned Area of the Pine Forest (소나무 수림의 산화적지의 이차천이와 종다양성)

  • This report is results of an investigation on the secondary succession and species diversity of the burned area. Fifty hectares of pine forest was burned by the crown fire of the spring (April 6) 1986. The results obtained from spring 1989 were summarized as follows: In the burned area , site and unburned area (U), the vascular plant fo 69 kinds, 49 kinds and 24 kinds were lsted respectively. The life form spectrum of burned area was H---e type, which is common type in most burned area and that unburned area, H---e type. The species diversity (H)and evenness index (e) of burned area (, site) were H=2.51, 1.65 and e=0.59, 0.44 and those of unburned area (U) were H=1.28 and e=0.40. The similarity index was the value of 0.594 in - and 0.236 in -U site. The similarity between and site was greater than between site and U site, and that between and U-site, The dominance index (c) of , and U-site was 0.16, 0.39 and 0.42 respectively. The succession degree (DS) of , and U-site was 244.0, 227.6 and 854.4 respectively. Soil pH, available phosphorous, and exchangeable potassium in the burned area were higher than those in the unburned area, and total nitrogen, organic carbon, and C/N ratio in the burned area were higher than those in the unburned area, and organic matter in the burned area was higher than that in the unburned area.

Comparison of Insect Community Structures of a Pinus rigida Plantation and a Quercus mongolica Secondary Forest in the Suburban Area, Korea (도시 근교 조림지인 리기다소나무림과 이차림인 신갈나무림에서 곤충 군집 구조 비교)

  • The insect community structures between a plantation of Pinus rigida and a secondary forest of Quercus monglica were compared to find out one of the ecological roles of a forest planted in 1960s in a suburban area of Seoul, Korea. We collected the insect samples biweekly from September to November in 2014 by using 5 pitfall traps in both forests. The results of analyzing the community structure index of insects in both forests of P. rigida and Q. Mongolica showed that the species richness was a little higher and species evenness was a little lower in P. rigida plantation, and species diversity and dominance were similar in the two forests. The analysis results of insect community structure at the two forests did not show any significant difference. We conclude that the plantation of P. rigida over 40-50 years could sufficiently perform an ecological function as an insect habitat.

Genomic Analysis of the Xanthoria elegans and Polyketide Synthase Gene Mining Based on the Whole Genome

  • Xanthoria elegans is a lichen symbiosis, that inhabits extreme environments and can absorb UV-B. We reported the de novo sequencing and assembly of X. elegans genome. The whole genome was approximately 44.63 Mb, with a GC content of 40.69%. Genome assembly generated 207 scaffolds with an N50 length of 563,100 bp, N90 length of 122,672 bp. The genome comprised 9,581 genes, some encoded enzymes involved in the secondary metabolism such as terpene, polyketides. To further understand the UV-B absorbing and adaptability to extreme environments mechanisms of X. elegans, we searched the secondary metabolites genes and gene-cluster from the genome using genome-mining and bioinformatics analysis. The results revealed that 7 NR-PKSs, 12 HR-PKSs and 2 hybrid PKS-PKSs from X. elegans were isolated, they belong to Type I PKS (T1PKS) according to the domain architecture; phylogenetic analysis and BGCs comparison linked the putative products to two NR-PKSs and three HR-PKSs, the putative products of two NR-PKSs were emodin xanthrone (most likely parietin) and mycophelonic acid, the putative products of three HR-PKSs were soppilines, (+)-asperlin and macrolactone brefeldin A, respectively. 5 PKSs from X. elegans build a correlation between the SMs carbon skeleton and PKS genes based on the domain architecture, phylogenetic and BGC comparison. Although the function of 16 PKSs remains unclear, the findings emphasize that the genes from X. elegans represent an unexploited source of novel polyketide and utilization of lichen gene resources.

Ecological characteristics of areas naturally inhabited by Dolbae trees(Pyrus pyrifolia) on Mt. Kaya

  • The ecological characteristics of Dolbae trees, a valuable genetic resource for native pyrus fruit trees, were investigated at four naturally inhabited areas on Mount Kaya, Gyeongsangnam-Do. Most Dolbae trees were found on the southwest side of an old hiking path to a mountain valley at altitudes of 610∼670 m. The surrounding flora consisted of 46 families, 69 genera, 75 species, and 10 varieties. The natural habitat of the Dolbae trees was basically a deciduous broad-leaved forest with a predominance of Quercus serrata and ligneous plants(xylophytes) from the Fagaceae and Betulaceae families. The habitat was also found to be in a second transition resulting from forest disturbance and exhibited a degree of diversity of 2.901-5.065, based on Shannon-Weiner's index. Examination of the Dolbae trees found in Mount Kaya revealed diameter breast heights(DBHs) ranging from 10 to 60 cm, including six old and large Dolbae trees with a DBH of 50∼60 cm, which will be particularly valuable as a genetic resource. Accordingly, the current results suggest that the study areas are a secondary forest in a typical mid-temperate zone resulting from forest damage about 10 years earlier.

Dyamics of Plant Communities under Human Impact in the Green-Belt nearby Seoul -Structure of Forest Communities and Secondary Succession- (인간간섭하의 수도권 그린벨트 내 식물군집의 동태 - 삼림군집의 구조와 이차천이 -)

  • In order to elucidate the relationship among the several forest types in the green-sbelt nearby Seoul, the vascular plant species data collected preferentially from 52 stands were subjected to DCA (detrended correspondence analysis). Eight types of forests were arranged on the I/II plane fo DCA stand ordination, Quercus mongolica, Alnus hirsuta, Populus alba $\times$ glandulosa, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis and pinus rigida forest. Correlation analysis between the stand scores of DCA and environmental factors revealed that the axis I of DCA stand ordination implied the gradient of altitude, organic matter, total nitrogen and depth of A horizon. The axis II implied the gradient of total nitrogen and soluble phosphorus. The results of PCA (principal components analysis) by environmental data were in good agreement with that of DCA by floristic data. The recruitments of Quercus spp. Occurred in all kinds of forest types in the green-belt and their recruitments were closely related with altitutde: Quercus dentata in the foot. Quercus serrata in the midslope and Quercus mongolica in the uperslope of the mountain.

Syntaxonomy and Synecology of Quercus variabilis Forest in Daecheong-dam basin (대청댐 유역 굴참나무림의 군락분류학 및 군락생태학적 연구)

  • Syntaxonomy and Synecology on Quercus variabilis forests in Daecheong-dam basin was carried out using the methods of Braun-Blanquet phytosociology. 6 syntaxa classified as species compositions described were Quercus variabilis community, Platycarya strobilacea-Quercus variabilis community(typicum subcommunity, dictamnus dasycarpus subcommunity), Quercetum variabili-serratae, Zelkova serrata-Quercus variabilis community and Dendranthema boreale-Quercus variabilis community. All syntaxa were shown habitat environmental conditions including steep inclination of more than 30°, high rock exposure rate of more than 50% and South-facing slope. These communities excepting Dendranthema boreale-Quercus variabilis community classified as natural vegetation were identified as low emergence rate of annual plants and species compositions composed native species, so it was confirmed that relatively natural succession were proceeding well. Quercetum variabili-serratae and Dendranthema boreale-Quercus variabilis community distributed forested hillslope of open water edge were representative Quercus variabilis syntaxa in Daecheong-dam basin.

Landslide Prediction with Angle of Repose Prediction Using 3D Spatial Coordinate System and Drone Image Detection (3차원 공간 좌표 시스템과 드론 영상 검출을 활용한 산사태 안식각 예측에 관한 연구)

  • Forest fires are representative natural disasters resulting from dramatic global climate change in these modern times. When forest formation is insufficient due to forest damage caused by fire, secondary damages such as landslides occur during the winter thawing period and heavy rains. In most countries, only a limited area is managed as CCTV-centered monitoring systems for forest management. For the landslide prediction, markers containing 3D spatial coordinates were located on the slopes of the danger areas in advance. Then 3D mapping and angle of repose were obtained by periodic drone imaging. The recognition range and angle of view of markers were defined, and a new method for predicting signs of landslides in advance was presented in this study.
