Corrosion of steam generator tubes is the major issue affecting selection of secondary water chemistry parameters. The objective of secondary side water chemistry control is to minimize corrosion damage and to thereby maximize the reliability and economic performance of the secondary system. To achieve this objective, the water chemistry has to be compatible with all parts of the system including steam generators.(Omitted)

The integrity of nuclear piping systems has to be maintained sufficiently all the times during operation. In order to maintain the integrity, reliable assessment procedures including fracture mechanics analysis, etc, are required. Up to now, the integrity assessment has been performed using conventional deterministic approach even though there are lots of uncertainties to hinder a rational evaluation. In this respect, probabilistic approach is considered as an appropriate method for piping system evaluation. The objectives of this paper are to develop a probabilistic assessment program using reliability index and simulation technique and to estimate the damage probability of wall-thinned pipes in secondary systems. The probabilistic assessment program consists of three evaluation modules which are first order reliability method, second order reliability method and Monte Carlo simulation method. The developed program has been applied to evaluate damage probabilities of wall-thinned pipes subjected to internal pressure, global bending moment and combined loading. The sensitivity analysis results as well as prototypal evaluation results showed a promising applicability of the probabilistic integrity assessment program.
Accident occurred by gas explosion in house or building causes damage on lives and properties. To avoid secondary damage, this study drew area ratio of vent area with the experiment for pressure variation with vent area versus building volume by selection of model for different size and shapes of vent area generated by explosion. In addition, Appropriate model was chosen to predict the damage by minimum pressure with the experiment of opening are shapes. This model can prevent secondary damage with the selected vent area and shape to guarantee building safety.
Due to neutron radiation, atomic displacement has a significant effect on material in nuclear reactors. A range of secondary displacement models, including the Kinchin-Pease (K-P), Lindhard, Norgett-Robinson-Torrens (NRT), and athermal recombination-corrected displacement per atom (arc-dpa) have been suggested to calculate the number of displacement per atom (dpa). As neutron elastic interaction is the main cause of displacement damage, the focus of the current study is to calculate the atomic displacement caused by the neutron elastic interaction in order to estimate the exact amount of yield strength in a WWER-1000 reactor pressure vessel. To achieve this purpose, the reactor core is simulated by MCNPX code. In addition, a program is developed to calculate the elastic radiation damage induced by the incident neutron flux (RADIX) based on different models using Fortran programming language. Also, due to non-elastic interaction, the displacement damage is calculated by the HEATR module of the NJOY code. ASME E-693-01 standard, SPECTER, NJOY codes, and other pervious findings have been used to validate RADIX results. The results showed that the RADIX(arc-dpa)/HEATR outputs have appropriate accuracy. The relative error of the calculated dpa resulting from RADIX(arc-dpa)/HEATR is about 8% and 46% less than NJOY code, respectively in the ¼ and ¾ vessel wall.
Mitigating secondary delayed neuronal injury has been a therapeutic strategy for minimizing neurological symptoms after several types of brain injury. Interestingly, secondary neuronal loss appeared to be closely related to functional loss and/or death of astrocytes. In the brain damage induced by agonists of two glutamate receptors, N-ethyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) and kainic acid (KA), NMDA induced neuronal death within 3 h, but did not increase further thereafter. However, in the KA-injected brain, neuronal death was not obviously detectable even at injection sites at 3 h, but extensively increased to encompass the entire hemisphere at 7 days. Brain inflammation, a possible cause of secondary neuronal damage, showed little differences between the two models. Importantly, however, astrocyte behavior was completely different. In the NMDA-injected cortex, the loss of glial fibrillary acidic protein-expressing ($GFAP^+$) astrocytes was confined to the injection site until 7 days after the injection, and astrocytes around the damage sites showed extensive gliosis and appeared to isolate the damage sites. In contrast, in the KA-injected brain, $GFAP^+$ astrocytes, like neurons, slowly, but progressively, disappeared across the entire hemisphere. Other markers of astrocytes, including $S100{\beta}$, glutamate transporter EAAT2, the potassium channel Kir4.1 and glutamine synthase, showed patterns similar to that of GFAP in both NMDA- and KA-injected cortexes. More importantly, astrocyte disappearance and/or functional loss preceded neuronal death in the KA-injected brain. Taken together, these results suggest that loss of astrocyte support to neurons may be a critical cause of delayed neuronal death in the injured brain.

The frequency and severity of damage caused by extreme climate events are increasing due to climate change. If the infrastructure is not prepared for the risks of climate change, property loss may occur in the facility itself and its surrounding areas. Therefore, climate change adaptation technology should be introduced to reduce future losses. Policy makers need to understand the economic impacts of each technology in order to select an appropriate option. Both the primary damage, which is the direct damage to the facility, and the secondary damage, which is the damage to the surrounding area due to climate change, should all be identified for understanding the economic impact from adaptation. This paper presents a procedure for deriving primary and secondary damage reductions from introducing adaptation technologies and suggests a methodology for evaluating adaptation technology specific to each infrastructure.

In the authors' previous study, an axial force-flexural moment (P-M) interaction curve model was proposed to evaluate fire-resisting performances of reinforced concrete (RC) column members. The proposed method appeared to properly consider the axial and flexural strength degradations including the secondary moment effects in RC columns due to fire damage. However, the detailed P-M interaction curve model proposed in the authors' previous study requires somewhat complex computational procedures and iterative calculations, which makes it difficult to be used for practical design in its current form. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop a simplified P-M interaction curve model of RC columns exposed to fire considering the effects of fire damage on the material performances and magnitudes of secondary moments. The simplified P-M interaction model proposed in this study was verified using 66 column fire test results collected from literature, and the verification results showed that the proposed simplified method can provide an adequate analysis accuracy of the failure loads and fire-resisting times of the RC column specimens.

Secondary damage to the user is a problem in biometrics. A brain-wave has no shape and a malicious user may not cause secondary damage to a user. However, if user sends brain-wave signals to an authentication system using a network, a malicious user could easily capture the brain-wave signals. Then, the malicious user could access the authentication system using the captured brain-wave signals. In addition, the dataset containing the brain-wave signals is large and the transfer time is long. However, user authentication requires a real-time processing, and an encryption scheme on brain-wave signals is necessary. In this paper, we propose an efficient encryption scheme using a chaos map and adaptive junk data on the brain-wave signals for user authentication. As a result, the encrypted brain-wave signals are produced and the processing time for authentication is reasonable in real-time.

The overvoltage generated by the lightning strokes has been doing considerable damage to the distribution network as well as the consumer facility until now. Because most of the lightning strokes are accompanied by a storm, the aftermath of damage to the consumer is so serious. Therefore it is very important to survey the optimal operation plan by the field test of distribution lightning facilities. In this paper we have accomplished the field test to verify the impulse characteristic of Secondary Arrester(SA), and analyzed the effect of the SA in power distribution system.

In order to reduce the secondary earthquake disaster resulting from the damage of gas facilities it is indispensable to establish an early response system on the basis of damage prediction. In this study the procedure of damage prediction for gas facilities is proposed and applied to the gas supply model area. Model area is divided into several little blocks. The soil condition and the characteristics of facilities were investigated at each block. Using fragility curves of facilities the damage level was analyzed under various seismicities. It is confirmed that the exposure gas pipe line in several blocks is damaged seriously by the collapse of building structures.
