  • The important problems that arise in the design and performance of the axial flow turbine are the prediction and control of secondary flows. Some progresses have been made on understanding flow conditions that occur when the inlet endwall boundary layer separates at the point in the endwall and rolls up into the horseshoe vortex. And the flows though an axial turbine tend to be extremely complex due to its inherent unsteady and viscous phenomena. The passing wakes generated from the trailing edge of the stator make an interaction with the rotor. Unsteady flow should be considered rotor/stator interactions. The main purpose of this research is control of secondary flow and improvement efficiency in turbine by leading edge modification in unsteady state. When the wake from the stator ran into the modified leading edge of the rotor, the leading edge generated the weak pressure fluctuation by complex passage flows. In conclusion, leading edge modification(bulb2) results in the reduced total pressure loss in the flow field.

  • The Coanda effect has been used extensively in various aerodynamic applications to improve the system performance. The primary flow in Coanda ejectors is attached to the ejector wall and is expanded inducing a secondary flow. This will probably lead to the mixing of both primary and secondary flows at a down stream section. Very few works have been reported based on the optimization on such devices. The main objective of the present study is to numerically investigate the flow field on a typical Coanda ejector and validate the results with the available experimental data. Many configurations of the Coanda ejector have been analyzed. The effect of various geometric parameters of the device on the expanding mixing layer has also been obtained. The computed data agree fairly well with the experimental data available.

  • The flow analysis method which had been developed for the numerical calculation of 3-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent flow within an axial compressor was extended to the flow field within centrifugal impeller. In this method based on the SIMPLE(Semi Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations) algorithm, the coordinate transformation was adopted and the standard k-.epsilon. model using wall function was used for turbulent flow analysis. The calculated flow fields have agreed very well with measurement results. Especially, 3-dimensional and viscous flow characteristics including secondary flows, jet-wake flow and decreased pressure rise along impeller passage, which can't be predicted by inviscid Q3D calculation were predicted very reasonably.

  • In the tropical western Pacific (especially, west of 135oE, including South China Sea and the Philippines), during boreal summer, it was found that a strong correlation exists between the tropical cyclone activity and the drought conditions in Korea. During the summer drought, firstly, there were strong ascending flows over the tropical western Pacific with more tropical cyclone genesis, and to compensate for this, descending flows develop in the mid-latitudes, thereby causing drought; in other words, a secondary circulation is formed between the tropical western Pacific and mid-latitudes of East Asia. Secondly, the developments of both the subtropical western Pacific high and the Manchurian low are suppressed. As a result, both the land-sea pressure gradient and the southerly flow from low-latitudes to Korean area are also weakened, which reduces approaches of tropical cyclones to this area despite the high frequency of their geneses.

  • Flow patterns were measured in an unshrouded centrifugal impeller. The flow rate in measurements was fixed at the value corresponding to a nearly zero incidence at the blade inlet. By using a single slanted hot-wire probe and a Kiel probe mounted on the impeller hub disk, the 3-D relative velocities and the rotary stagnation pressures were measured in seven circumferential planes from the inlet to the outlet of the impeller rotating at 700rpm, which diameter is 0.39 meter, and the static pressures and the slip factor at the impeller outlet were calculated from the measured values. From the measured data, the primary/secondary flows, the leakage flows, the wake-jet flows, static pressure distribution on blade surfaces and the wake production mechanism in the impeller passage were investigated.

  • Numerical computations were conducted to characterize the three-dimensional laminar flow through an injector orifice having an inclined angle of 30 .deg.. For this study, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized curvilinear coordinates, using a pseudocompressibility approach for continuity equation, were solved. The computations were performed using the finite difference implicit, approximately factored scheme of Beam and Warming and multi-block grids of complete continuity at block interfaces. The multi-block computations were validated for the steady state using direct comparison of multi-block solutions with equivalent single-block ones, including 2-D 180.deg. TAD and 3-D 90.deg. pipe bend. The comparisons between the numerical solutions and the flow field measurements for a tube with sudden contraction were presented in this work for solution validation. Computational results showed the nature of complex flow fields within the inclined injector orifice, including strong pressure-driven secondary flows in the cross stream induced by the effect of streamline curvature. In addition, asymmetric secondary flows were induced in the Reynolds number range above assumed laminar flow regime considered. However, turbulence calculations and grid dependency studies are needed for more accurate computations.

  • The carbon dioxide properties change sharply near the critical or pseudo-critical point in the heat transfer processes. The reduction in turbulent, convective heat transfer parameters observed in some supercritical data and in experiments with common gases can be due to property variation, acceleration, buoyancy or combinations of these phenomena, depending on the conditions of the applications. In this study, the measurement for the secondary flow driven by buoyancy was carried out on the supercritical carbon dioxide turbulent flows in the different boundary condition with the constant mass flow rate. The available measuring techniques were used to clarify the behaviour of any supercritical fluid. Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) and a special device was used to measure the secondary velocity and turbulent characteristics of the supercritical flows.
