  • The reproductive ecology of the goldeye rockfish (Sebastes thompsoni) was examined using 421 specimens collected monthly from January to December 2005 in the coastal waters of Busan, Korea. Specimens ranged in standard length (SL) from 13.8 to 31.8 cm. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females was highest in March and decreased until June. In males the GSI was the highest in February after that the values declined. The spawning season lasted from January to June, and the ratio of female to male did not differ significantly ($x^2$-test, p>0.05). The length at first spawning was 16.8cm SL, and the size at 50% maturity was estimated at 20.11 cm SL. All females more than 25 cm SL were sexually mature and the egg diameters were from 0.60 to 1.75 mm. Fecundity (F) ranged from 23,881 to 44,509 eggs, with a mean of 30,937 eggs. The relationship between fecundity and standard length was estimated as F=9.3762 $SL^{1.1662}$ ($R^2$=0.81). The relationship between fecundity and body weight (BW) was estimated as F=184.37 Ln (BW) - 665.09 ($R^2$=0.87).

  • Sexual maturation and reproductive cycle of the goldeye rockfish, Sebastes thompsoni were investigated under photomicroscopy. Samples were collected monthly in the coastal water of Samcheonpo ($34^{\circ}55'N$ ), Korea from November 1995 to October 1996, The ovary consists of several ovarian lamellae originated from ovarian outer membrane. Oogonia which are originated from the inner surface of the ovarian lamella protrude to the ovarian cavity in oocyte stage, and they ave suspended by the egg stalk. The testis is seminiferous tubule type in internal structure. Seminiferous tubule consists of many testicular cysts which contain numerous germ cells in same developmental stage. Biological minimum size of female and male were 19.5 cm and 21.5 cm in total length, respectively. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) of female was the highest (9.56) in March and the lowest (0.15) in August. GSI of male was the highest (0.25) in February and the lowest (0.04) in July. Reproductive cycle was classified into the following successive stages: in female, growing (October and November), maturation ( $December\~February$), gestation (March), parturition and recovery ($April\~June$) and resting ($July\~September$), and in male, growing ($September\~November$), maturation ( December and January), ripe and copulation ( February and March) and degeneration and resting ($April\~August$).

  • The single anatomical attribute that has the greatest influence on acoustic scattering from fish is the presence or absence of a swimbladder. This study examined the effect of removing the gas from the swimbladder on the broadband backscattering characteristics of six species of swimbladdered fish: striped beakperch Oplegnathus fasciatus, black scraper Thamnaconus modestus, dark-banded rockfish Sebastes inermis, goldeye rockfish Sebastes thompsoni, black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli and panther puffer Takifugu pardalis. Before and after removing the gas from the swimbladder, the species-specific, frequency-dependent backscattered echo signals from anaesthetized individuals of each fish species were measured at approximately 1° intervals spanning a 90° aspect angle range from -45° (head down) to +45° (head up) using a broadband echo sounder operating at 100-200 kHz. The relationship between the wavelength-normalized backscattering cross section (σ/λ2) and fish length (L/λ) was calculated for each species. The average σ/λ2 value for the six fish species at a L/λ range of 19.79-25.85, with a mean of 22.89, was reduced by approximately 52.3% when the gas was removed.

  • This study researched the population of ecological characteristics of the goldeyes rockfish Sebasetes thompsoni sampled by gill net in the Ulleungdo area from February 2013 to February 2014 in order to assess the current stock status and provide scientific advice for management implementation. The instantaneous coefficient of total mortality (Z) was 0.78/year and the survival rate (S) was 0.459. The instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality (M) was 0.461/year. Based on the estimates of Z and M, the instantaneous coefficient of fishing mortality (F) was 0.318/year. The age at first capture ($t_c$) was 4.41/years. Current Yield-per-recruit (YPR) was 30.83 g, and fishing mortality at maximum YPR ($F_{max}$) and fishing mortality corresponding to 10% of the maximum slope in YPR curve ($F_{0.1}$) were 3.257/year and 0.673/year, respectively. $F_{35%}$ and $F_{40%}$, indicating fishing mortalities at 35% and 40% of maximum Spawning biomass-per-recruit (SBPR), were 0.619/year and 0.509/year, respectively. Based on the biological reference points, fishing mortality at overfished threshold yield ($F_{OTY}$) was calculated as 0.509/year. Current $SBPR/SBPR_{MSY}$ was 1.313 above 1.0, which means 'not overfishe,' while current $F/F_{OTY}$ was 0.629 below 1.0, which indicates 'not overfishing.' In conclusion, the current status of goldeyes rockfish was located in green zone (i.e., not overfished and not overfishing) according to the revised Kobe plot.

  • The objective of this study was to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model for the acoustic identification of commercially important fish species in Korea. A broadband echo acquisition and processing system operating over the frequency range of 85-225 kHz was used to collect and process species-specific, time-frequency feature images from six fish species: black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, black scraper Thamnaconus modesutus [K], chub mackerel Scomber japonicus, goldeye rockfish Sebastes thompsoni, konoshiro gizzard shad Konosirus punctatus and large yellow croaker Larimichthys crocea. An ANN classifier was developed to identify fish species acoustically on the basis of only 100 dimension time-frequency features extracted by the principal components analysis (PCA). The overall mean identification rate for the six fish species was 88.5%, with individual identification rates of 76.6% for black rockfish, 82.8% for black scraper, 93.8% for chub mackerel, 90.6% for goldeye rockfish, 96.9% for konoshiro gizzard shad and 90.6% for large yellow croaker, respectively. These results demonstrate that individual live fish in well-controlled environments can be identified accurately by the proposed ANN model.

  • We aimed to assess the behavior characteristics of fish on an artificial reef using hydroacoustic techniques. The acoustical survey was conducted with a 200 kHz dual beam transducer while fishing on the stone combination reef of Uljin. A school of fish were detected on the artificial reef before sunset and floated on the artificial reef at 30 minutes after sunset. The density (Nautical Area Scattering Coefficient, NASC) of fish that floated on the artificial reef after sunset was about $600m^2/nmi^2$; similar observations (about $50m^2/nmi^2$ or less) were noted after 19:00 hours. Fish caught by fishing on the artificial reef were Sebastes schlegeli, Hexagrammos otakii, Sebastes thompsoni, and Conger myriaster. Resultantly, we demonstrated that hydroacoustic techniques are useful for detecting behavior characteristics of fish in the artificial reef. Such results can be used for basic data to estimate the install effect of the artificial reefs.

  • By using the offshore type submersible platform, Artificial sea floor anchored at a depth of forty meters several experimental studies have been conducted successfully during 1996. The facility consists of an artificial sea floor that floats at 7 meters below the surface, a machinery hut that projects above the surface at the center of the structure and a balance weight beneath the structure. The facility can be surfaced easily by using a water discharging pump in the water tank which is located at the center of it. To find out the behavioral character and the gathering factor of fishes around the artificial sea floor, investigations were carried out during the daytime and nighttime by direct observation and by echo-sounder. Around the testing reefs and artificial sea floor, six kinds of fishes were found by diving observation and the dominants were Scomber japonicus, Sebastes thompsoni and Oplegnathus fascitus. As Scomber japonicus was distributed around the artificial sea floor in dense small school, they were not seen elsewhere in the survey area. The artificial sea floor was concluded to act as a schooling ground far Scomber japonicus, Sebastes thompsoni and Oplegnathus fascitus. were close to the testing reefs(within 10m) in the daytime, and were thought to settle on the testing reefs at nighttime, To examine the distribution of 7shes around the artificial sea floor, an acoustic survey over a 1$\times$1km area, 0-50m in depth during the all day. Around the artificial sea floor many thin scattering fish echo(TS-54.5~ -51.5dB) and dense fish echo(TS-41~-38dB) were mainly distributed. Many scattering fish echoes, which were thought to be a mixture of small squid, pelegic crustacea and ethers, were distributed over the whole survey area. A dense fish school stayed beneath the artificial sea floor for a short duration. These phenomena were concluded to show an attraction and detention function of the artificial sea floor.

  • Seasonal variation of species composition in the coastal waters off Wangdol-cho were investigated using the catches by gill net and trammel net from 2002 to 2004. A total of 58 species was collected and classified into 15 orders and 34 families. Of the 58 species identified, Scorpaeniformes and Perciformes accounted for 62.1% of the species. 35 species in 11 orders and 22 families were collected by gill net and 51 species in 15 orders and 30 families were collected by trammel net. The number of species was high in summer and autumn and lowest in winter. Catches were correlated with sea water temperature. The numbers of individuals and their biomass were 5,295 inds. and 1,890 kg, with the highest values achieved in summer and the lowest in spring. The most dominant species were Pleurogrammus azonus and Gadus macrocephalus. The seasonal species community showed a high similarity between summer and autumn.
