  • This research is on a seating posture happening at a chair in a cinema and looked into various changes in a posture through the analysis of bodily movement in a established space like a cinema. Through the behavioral analysis of a seating posture in a limited space, each behavioral characteristic shown by a male and female and interdependent relations with a limited space were grasped. The conclusion through the above research work was as follows: 1) This research suggested a frame of analysis by dividing a seating posture into the side and upper part and was able to analyze its subsequent change characteristic of a seating posture by a male and female. 2) As for the side posture, a male was found to change fewer postures than a female, but as for the upper posture, there appeared a high frequency in posture change in case of a female. 3) As for time of staying in the side posture, a female was found to keep up a specific posture, and relatively a male changes his postures frequently while appreciating a movie; likely, as for the upper posture, it was found out that there existed a difference between the preference for the upper posture and time to keep it up. 4) A male and female were establishing a comfortable environment through their change in a posture, and there appeared changes in a posture the most within every 10 minutes in both the side and upper part postures. 5) As for the correlation between a initial posture and keep-up posture, it was found that a male tend to pursue a comfortable posture as time goes by, while a female kept up a comfortable one from her initial seating posture.

  • Objective: This research focuses on the working environment of office workers and aims to propose an ideal seating posture and chair design. Background: Generally, office workers having to seat in a fixed posture for long periods of time tend to suffer from an increased rate of musculoskeletal disorders. Method: The measurement and survey of 123 office workers on their working conditions and literature survey will lead to a suggestion of an ideal seating posture and workstation design theory. Results: Work environment satisfaction appeared low for chair and desks. Work-related pain over the last year was experienced among 47.2% of the respondents in shoulder (34.2%), neck (30.9%). Observation of working posture revealed that only 27.6% of workers utilize backrest during work. Conclusion: Office work embodies many situations where risks of musculoskeletal disorders may be high. Thus, the seated workplace must be set up to allow proper seating posture for workers. Application: The results of this study can be applied as baseline data for preventing musculoskeletal disorders of office workers.

  • Human characteristic responding to idle vibration on passenger vehicle was studied to find if affected by seating posture of passenger. When twelve male subjects are exposed to moderate vertical vibration of 0.224 $m/s^2$ r.m.s. at frequency range from 3 Hz to 40 Hz, it was found that seating posture significantly affects to biodynamical characteristics, apparent mass and apparent eccentric mass, at most range of idle vibration frequency(20~40 Hz). The supported thigh contact on rigid seat showed bigger values in the two biodynamical characteristics than the average thigh contact. The bigger apparent mass and apparent eccentric mass in the seating posture of the supported thigh contact can be assumed more strengthened muscle at the frequency range.

  • The primary objective of this research was to suggest the design dimensions of automotive seating package that has an important effect upon seating package design. To conduct the research, a set of manikin dimensions that are representative for Korean was determined by using a statistical scheme. With these dimensions, we generated nine manikins for male and female, respectively. Also, the preferred driving posture was investigated using the experimental setup. To find each joint angle for subjects, a driving monitoring system was developed and a three dimensional motion analysis system was employed. The joint angle for the subject was established and compared with related literature. With the generated manikins and each joint angle, the driving posture was simulated by using SAFEWORK that is a program to generate manikins. The positions and adjustable ranges from the accelerator heel point to the hip point and the steering wheel center point that are important variables in order to design seating package were suggested. Further research is needed to determine the seating package dimensions three dimensionally.

  • The purpose this study was to examine the actual condition and trends in changing the seating style in the house, focusing on the behavioral posture. The data was collected through the self-entry questionnaire designed for this study and the sample of 400 in total, 200 cases from Korea and 200 cases from Japav. The major findings were as the following : the seating style of Korean and japanese female university students were the floor-seating trends in the present conditiov. But they generally preferred the chair seating in the future. In the present seating style, the chair seating style has included bath, study, dinner, sleep, make-up, rest and family communication in that order by Korean Female university students ; the chair seating style has included sleep, study, dinner, make-up, bath, rest and family communication in that order by japanese. In the future seating style, the chair seating style has included study, make-up, dinner, sleep, bath, family communication and rest in that order by Korean ; the chair seating style sleep, study·make-up, dinner, family communication, rest and bath in that order by Japanese.

  • Purpose : Although many studies have explored the effect of seating side angles on the spinal curve and surrounding muscles during seating, only a few studies have investigated the effect of different seating face angles on different lower limb and deep trunk muscles. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of seating surface angles (0 degrees, 10 degree anterior, and 10 degree rear) on lower extremity and deep trunk muscles in healthy adults. Methods : Thirty people were asked to sit once on each seating surface three times during the day, and their muscle thicknesses were measured by ultrasound while sitting. The method of sitting was the same when sitting on the three seating surfaces. Results : From the comparison results of the muscle thicknesses according to the seating surface angles, a significant difference existed in the muscle thicknesses of the vastus medialis, vastus medialis oblique, vastus intermedius, soleus and gastrocnemius (p<.05). However, no significant difference was found in the transversus abdominis, internal obliques, rectus femoris and vastus lateralis (p>.05). Conclusion : Our findings revealed that the lower back load decreases, the leg load increases, and the legs specific muscles are affected as the body tilts forward when sitting on the seating surface inclined forward. Therefore, it is possible to suggest a forwardly inclined seating surface that reduces lower back loads and utilizes the posture-maintaining muscles of the legs when sitting in a person with a poor sitting posture or lower back pain at ordinary times.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the seating style of children between Korea and USA viewed from activity analysis in child-care centers. Observation and depth-interview method were used for data collection. Ninety-eight children aged from 38 to almost 62 months were observed for five minutes three times during an indoor free play period in Korea and USA in 2003 and 2004. The results of the research were as follows. There were significant differences between the postures of Korean and American children. Korean children maintained floor-seating postures longer than chair-seating and standing postures. The factors such as sex, age and physical environment influenced the children's seating style, while playing-type influenced their posture. This study will contribute to our understanding of the physical environment and children's seating style according to culture.

  • As advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) and autonomous driving performance continue to improve, existing crash accidents and crash types are changing. Accordingly, the collision angle and the seating posture of the occupant are changed. It is necessary to study how the occupant injury mechanism changes according to these different crash types. In this regard, a representative crash test mode was derived when the automatic emergency braking system (AEB), one of the autonomous driving performance, was applied to the representative car-to-car crash scenario in Korea. The derived crash test mode was used to analyse the mechanisms of collision injuries according to both impact angle and the occupant seating posture (reclined seat-back angle). The results obtained through this study can be utilized as reference data for the development of new crash evaluation methods and improvements in crash restraint systems for enhancing crash safety.
