  • Six models of operator seat supplied to local tractor manufacturers were tested in the laboratory in accordance with ISO 5007 and 78/764/EEC. No models out of the six met the allowable damping and transmissibility performance criteria of both ISO 5007 and 78/764/EEC. From the ISO criterion standpoint, one model failed in damping performance and 4 models in isolation performance. From the 78/764/EEC criterion standpoint, 4 models failed in damping performance and 4 models in isolation performance. However none of them failed in all of the criteria, either. Each model met the one acceptance criterion but failed in another. This indicated that operator seat must be improved to meet the current ISO 5007 or 78/764/EEC and the exposure limit value that will be enforced in EU tractor market from 2014 by EU Directive 2002/44 EC.

  • This paper describes a helicopter vibration induced by main rotor in forward flight. The hub loads in the fixed frame, which are dominant source of helicopter vibration, are obtained by multi-blade summation of rotating blades loadings. The components of 3/rev, 4/rev, and 5/rev blades loadings are transmitted by blades to 4/rev hub loads in the fixed frame. The vertical vibrations of helicopter at pilot seat and copilot seat are calculated through rigid body transfer functions considering airframe to be rigid body. The blades are assumed to be elastic and undergo the flap, lag, and torsion motion and free wake aerodynamic model is used to calculate the precise blade loadings in the analysis. The 4/rev vertical vibration responses are analyzed from rotating blade loadings and fixed hub loadings.

  • This paper deals with the whole-body vibration and ride quality evaluation in the vertical direction. The responses of the floor, hip, back, and head in four subjects were measured for various seats when the floor was excited by random vibration with r.m.s of 1.2m/s2 in the vertical direction. In the transmissibility between the hip and floor, the fundamental mode is observed at 4.4 Hz. In the transmissibility between the head and floor, the fundamental mode at 4.4Hz and the second mode at 7.6Hz are observed. It is shown that the head motion is 41% larger than the hip motion and the response of female subject is larger than that of male subject. The response without backrest also was compared with that with backrest. From these human responses ride quality of five seats were evaluated by the ride value such as transfer ration having frequency weighting function is the statistical sense. It is observed that the seat having high damping property can reduce the most acceleration exposed to hip in the statistical sense for all ride valves, while the seat having different seat spring doesn't show statistical difference.

  • In this paper, dynamic modeling with viscoelastic properties of a human body resting on a seat is presented to quantitatively analyze ride quality of passengers exposed to vertical vibrations. In describing the motions of a seated body, a 5 degree-of-freedom multibody model from the literature is investigated. The viscoelastic characteristics of seats used in railway vehicles are mathematically formulated with nonlinear stiffness characteristics and convolution integrals representing time delay terms. Transfer functions for the floor input are investigated and it is found that these are different in accordance with the input magnitude due to nonlinear characteristics of the seat. Measured floor input at the railway vehicle is used to analyze realistic human vibration characteristics. Frequency weighted RMS acceleration values are calculated and the effects of the seat design parameters on the frequency weighted RMS acceleration values are presented.

  • Idle NVH characteristics are one of the most important aspects among the vehicle performances. Vehicle developers are devoted to improve vehicle interior noise and steering wheel and seat vibrations. In order to improve the idle quality, noise and vibration transfer path should be carefully evaluated. Also, effects of various components related to the idle performance should be confirmed. A general procedure for improving the idle qualify is described in detail. The relationship among cylinder pressure characteristics, crankshaft rotational speed variation, and vehicle vibrations is also investigated. Influences of drive shaft, torque converter, air conditioning system, vehicle structure including engine mount system, and idle control parameters on the vehicle idle quality are studied. Weak points of typical vehicles on the idle qualify are identified. Some of improvement measures are proposed and verified.

  • Vehicle seats provide a comfortable ride for passengers by properly absorbing vibrations and shocks transmitted during driving. Vibration analyses on three models with different shapes were carried with the same material properties and constraint conditions. By varying the height of the seat-back, models 1, 2, and 3 were designed according to the inclined angle of the seat-back frame. Models 1, 2, and 3 were modeled with relatively simple designs using CATIA. The areas touching the buttocks of passengers show the most deformation. This work shows that seat durability and stability can vary depending on the shape of the seat design.

  • Polyurethane flexible foams have been widely used for automotive seat cushions because of their excellent performance. It has been required so far to reduce the density of seat cushion foam. However, recently, improving the riding comfort of seat cushions becomes more important. With regard to riding comfort, we investigated the improvement of static properties such as the ball rebound property and the hysteresis loss. We also studied the vibration characteristics, which are well known as an important factor to affect the comfort performance during driving.

  • Commercial drivers feel tired more than the general public, because their driving times are long and they experience more idle vibration. In this study, we developed a nonlinear model of a magnetic, linear spring seat suspension to determine the optimal design to improve ride comfort. The resonant frequency for the optimal design of the suspension was found to be 3.5 Hz, and the stiffness was analyzed through displacement-load experiments. Additionally, the vibration transmissibility was analyzed by the suspension stiffness, and the existing coil spring type vibration transmissibility was found to be 0.99. A parallelogram type magnetic spring was determined to result in a better performance than the existing spring with a vibration transmissibility of 0.823.

  • Recently, in the movie theater, the special chair is installed to maximize the viewing effect of movies. It is structured to convey a vibrational stimulus to a specially-designated parts of human body by attaching a vibration transducer to a existing theater chair. This paper describes the analysis of the vibration transfer characteristic of a foaming sponge seat for the design of the special chair. We could not apply the structural analysis S/W because it is difficult to obtain the mechanical properties and damping coefficients of the various type sponges. And then we computed the transfer functions by the global curve fitting program based on experimental modal analysis. The experimental response results comparatively coincide with those by the global curve fitting program. We also could obtain the natural frequencies, the modal damping coefficient ratio, the modal vectors and the whole transfer functions. Therefore we could analyze the dynamic characteristic for design of foaming sponge seat.

  • Driver's feeling is variously affected by lots of components such as engine, frame, wheels, and seats during the operation of automobiles. The main objective of this research is to identify the correlation between subjective evaluation and vibration metrics that was set by ISO to investigate development of the car vibration quality index using multiple linear regressions(MLR). A previous research related with automotive vibration quality used the method of calculating acceleration values of the point of a seat, a seat back, foot as RMS for objective evaluation. The automotive comfort is determined by RMS values. In comparison with the previous research, this study includes not only the vibration metrics, but also subjective values by jury evaluation. By indentifying the correlation between subjective evaluation and vibration metrics, the automotive vibration quality index is developed through MLR. Based on the results of this study, the proposed the automotive vibration quality index which developed through MLR will be helpful to obtain objective and reliable automotive comfort values.
