A Note on Tests for Seasonal Unit Roots in the Presence of Deterministic Trends

  • In this paper we show that the results of Ahn and Cho (1992) can be applied to a more general class of seasonal models, especially models with autocorrelated errors. Employing the idea of the "two-step estimation" method, we provide test statistics which are easy to compute and have the same asymptotic properties as those in Ahn and Cho (1992) for seasonal unit roots. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the methods and concepts. The power of the test statistics for finite samples is examined through a Monte Carlo sampling experiment.xperiment.

Seasonal variation of Attached Diatoms community in the Hantan River

  • This study was investigated to the seasonal variation of attached diatoms communities in the Hantan River in November 2001, February, Ma and August 2002. It was identified the total 107 taxa which were composed of 95 species, 11 varieties and 1 unidentified speCies. The standing crops ranged 298,5004,776,000cells${\cdot}cm^{-2}.$and showed marked irregularly seasonal variations. It was higher value at the lower station than the upper station in fall. But it was similar values from the upper to the lower station by the effect of typhoon in summer. Chlorophyll concentrations ranged $13.4~304.2{\mu}m{\cdot}cm^{-2}.$ Standing crops and chlorophyll showed similar trends during investigation. Low diversity index values probably indicated the effects of envi~onmental stresses(water temperature, flow and current velocity) other than organic pollution. An assessment of organic pollution using epilithic diatoms(DAlpo) was $\alpha$-oligosaprobic states at the upper and mid stations, and was $\alpha$-mesosaprobic states at the lower stations.

Classification of Land Cover on Korean Peninsula Using Multi-temporal NOAA AVHRR Imagery

  • Multi-temporal approaches using sequential data acquired over multiple years are essential for satisfactory discrimination between many land-cover classes whose signatures exhibit seasonal trends. At any particular time, the response of several classes may be indistinguishable. A harmonic model that can represent seasonal variability is characterized by four components: mean level, frequency, phase and amplitude. The trigonometric components of the harmonic function inherently contain temporal information about changes in land-cover characteristics. Using the estimates which are obtained from sequential images through spectral analysis, seasonal periodicity can be incorporates into multi-temporal classification. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was computed for one week composites of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery over the Korean peninsula for 1996 ~ 2000 using a dynamic technique. Land-cover types were then classified both with the estimated harmonic components using an unsupervised classification approach based on a hierarchical clustering algorithm. The results of the classification using the harmonic components show that the new approach is potentially very effective for identifying land-cover types by the analysis of its multi-temporal behavior.

  • The Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a disorder characterized by prolonged periods of depression and various physical and psychological symptoms experienced during specific seasons, typically winter. In this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of SAD with a specific focus on psychophysiological aspects. Through the review from ancient times to the present, this paper explores the characteristics, causes, and underlying mechanisms of SAD. Particularly, it comprehensively reviews the research findings on the relationship between external factors such as light, sunlight, climate, and their association with SAD. Furthermore, the paper discusses the interplay between SAD and psychophysiological changes, along with the latest research trends in treatment and prevention strategies. By combining theoretical and practical perspectives on SAD, this article aims to provide a holistic understanding and offer suggestions for future research directions and clinical interventions.

Mann-Kendall 추세분석을 이용한 건조지수 추세의 동질성 (Homogeneity of Climate Aridity Index Trends Using Mann-Kendall Trend Test)

  • 우리나라 전국 43개 기후관측지점을 대상으로 기후 건조지수 추세의 시간적(월별, 계절별, 연별) 동질성을 분석하였다. 또한 43개 기후관측지점을 9개 지역으로 구분하여 이들 각 지역과 전체 9개 지역을 대상으로 시간적 및 지역적인 기후 건조지수 추세의 동질성 유무와 추세정도를 파악하였다. 분석을 위해 43개 기후관측지점의 월별, 계절별 그리고 연별 건조지수를 강수량과 FAO Penman-Monteith식으로 계산된 잠재증발산량으로부터 산정하였다. 또한 산정된 지수를 이용하여 Mann-Kendall 추세분석을 실시하였고, 추세분석 결과(Z scores)를 이용하여 기후 건조지수 추세의 시간적 및 지역적 동질성 분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과에 의하면 9개 각 지역과 전체 9개 지역에서 기후 건조지수 추세는 시간적 및 지역적으로 동질성이 있는 것으로 나타났으나, 추세의 동질성 정도 및 추세정도는 시간적 및 지역적으로 다른 양상을 보였다.

Trend Analysis of GPS Precipitable Water Vapor Above South Korea Over the Last 10 Years

  • We analyzed global positioning system (GPS)-derived precipitable water vapor (PWV) trends of the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute 5 stations (Seoul, Daejeon, Mokpo, Milyang, Sokcho) where Korea Meteorological Administration meteorological data can be obtained at the same place. In the least squares analysis, the GPS PWV time series showed consistent positive trends (0.11 mm/year) over South Korea from 2000 to 2009. The annual increase of GPS PWV was comparable with the 0.17 mm/year and 0.02 mm/year from the National Center for Atmospheric Research Earth Observing Laboratory and Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder, respectively. For seasonal analysis, the increasing tendency was found by 0.05 mm/year, 0.16 mm/year, 0.04 mm/year in spring (March-May), summer (June-August) and winter (December-February), respectively. However, a negative trend (-0.14 mm/year) was seen in autumn (September-November). We examined the relationship between GPS PWV and temperature which is the one of the climatic elements. Two elements trends increased during the same period and the correlation coefficient was about 0.8. Also, we found the temperature rise has increased more GPS PWV and observed a stronger positive trend in summer than in winter. This is characterized by hot humid summer and cold dry winter of Korea climate and depending on the amount of water vapor the air contains at a certain temperature. In addition, it is assumed that GPS PWV positive trend is caused by increasing amount of saturated water vapor due to temperature rise in the Korean Peninsula. In the future, we plan to verify GPS PWV effectiveness as a tool to monitor changes in precipitable water through cause analysis of seasonal trends and indepth/long-term comparative analysis between GPS PWV and other climatic elements.

계절 및 회원 특성이 공공자전거 통행에 미치는 영향분석 : 서울시 따릉이를 대상으로 (Effects of Seasonal and Membership Characteristics on Public Bicycle Traffic : Focusing on the Seoul Bike)

  • PURPOSES : Seoul introduced public bicycles to reduce environmental pollution and create a healthy society. Because the use of bicycles is highly weather dependent, and bicycles are rented by the people, member characteristics and seasonal influences should be considered. This study analyzed bicycle traffic characteristics considering seasonal and member characteristics and highlighted some implications. METHODS : The Yeouido and Sangam districts, which have multiple business districts, were taken as the areas of interest. In order to reflect seasonal and membership characteristics, the traffic volume, time of use, and characteristics of each zone were categorized by season (spring, summer, autumn, winter) and membership type (season, daily, group). In addition, we analyzed the pattern of traffic volume and usage time according to the traffic purpose after separating rental locations into residential, business, subway, and park, reflecting the land characteristics. RESULTS : The results revealed that seasonal characteristics were high for bicycle traffic, time of use, and occupancy rate for park locations in spring and autumn. In terms of membership characteristics, group and daily users appeared as major visitors for park locations, and the trends of commuter pass users showed that bicycle use meets the purpose of introducing public bicycles. CONCLUSIONS : Traffic characteristics differed according to seasonal and membership characteristics. It is necessary to involve and extend the users of the commuter pass. Situations in which commuter pass users cannot function as a group or in which daily users monopolize bicycles (especially near parks, near subway stations, etc.) must be avoided.

남한강 수계에서 장기 이화학적 수질특성에 대한 토지이용도 및 계절성 강우의 영향 (Influence of Landuse Pattern and Seasonal Precipitation on the Long-term Physico-chemical Water Quality in Namhan River Watershed)

  • The objective of this study was to analyze long-term annual and seasonal trends of water chemistry on landuse patterns and seasonal precipitation using 72 sampling sites within Namhan River watershed during 2001-2010. Water quality, based on multi-parameters of water temperature(WT), dissolved oxygen(DO), biochemical oxygen demand(BOD), chemical oxygen demand(COD), suspended solids(SS), total nitrogen(TN), total phosphorus(TP), and electric conductivity(EC) varied largely depending on monsoon rain and landuse patterns such as forest, cropland, and residence. Concentrations of BOD and COD as an indicator for organic matter pollution, increased during summer monsoon season at the cropland and residential streams. Values of TN and TP were higher in residential streams than in the forest and cropland streams. In the meantime, DO values had weak relations to the landuse patterns of forest and cropland cover. Water quality was worst in cropland and residential streams, and also most degradated in 4th order streams. Overall, our results suggest that efficient water quality management is required in the cropland and residential landuse streams.

우리나라 사계절 다중일 누적 극한강수현상의 시·공간적 변화 (Spatio-Temporal Changes in Seasonal Multi-day Cumulative Extreme Precipitation Events in the Republic of Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 최근 40년간(1973~2012) 우리나라 기상청 산하 61개 관측지점의 일강수량 자료를 바탕으로 1~5일 누적 최대 강수량에서 추출한 각 계절별 다중일 누적 극한강수현상의 시 공간적 발생 패턴과 변화 양상의 특징을 밝히고자 하였다. 사계절 중 다중일 누적 극한강수현상의 규모 자체는 여름철에 가장 크지만, 계절 강수량 증감에 따른 극한강수현상 규모 변화민감도는 가을철에 더 높게 나타난다. 장기간 시계열에 나타난 선형 추세 분석에 따르면, 1~5일 다중일 누적 극한강수현상의 규모는 동일하게 사계절 중 여름철에 가장 뚜렷하게 증가하는 변화 양상이 나타난다. 특히, 경기도와 강원영서, 충청도 지역을 중심으로 여름철 다중일 누적 극한강수현상의 증가 규모가 크고 뚜렷하게 나타나고, 1일에서 5일로 누적 기간이 길수록 다중일 누적 극한강수현상의 증가 경향은 이들 지역이외에 소백산맥 주변지역에서도 관찰된다. 통계적 유의성을 보이는 이러한 다중일 누적 극한강수현상 증가추세는 일부 관측지점에서는 겨울철에도 1~2일 누적 극한강수현상에 나타나는 점도 주목할 만하다. 한편, 극한강수량이 계절 강수량에서 차지하는 비율의 변화 추세를 분석해보면, 사계절 중 겨울철에 증가 경향이 가장 뚜렷하게 나타난다. 이러한 결과들은 여름철뿐만 아니라 다른 계절의 다중일 누적 극한강수현상의 시 공간적 변화에도 대비할 필요성이 있음을 가리킨다.

시변동의 동질성 증가에 의한 비단조적 시계열자료의 경향성 탐지력 향상 (Improved Trend Estimation of Non-monotonic Time Series Through Increased Homogeneity in Direction of Time-variation)

  • 본 논문은 비단조적으로 변동하는 시계열자료를 단조적으로 변화하는 구간으로 분할하여 경향성을 분석함으로써 자료의 시변동에 대한 동질성을 향상시키고 그에 따라 경향성 분석기법의 탐지력을 향상시킬 수 있다는 가설을 전제로 하고 있다. 이를 검토하기 위한 기법으로서 시계열자료의 변동경향을 파악하기 위한 필터링 방법으로 LOWESS smoothing을 적용하였고, 시계열자료의 경향성분석은 seasonal Kendall test를 적용하였다. 인위적으로 발생시킨 시계열자료와 대청호의 수온, 유량, 기온, 일사량 등의 시계열자료를 대상으로 검토한 결과 비단조적인 변화를 보이는 시계열자료를 단조적인 변화구간으로 분할하여 경향성을 분석함으로써 자료의 변동 경향성과 기울기 판정의 정확도를 높일 수 있었다. 그리고, 자료의 시변동에 대한 동질성 향상은 계절 변동성의 동질성에 대한 변화를 보다 정확하게 분석하는데 도움을 주는 것으로 보였으며 이것은 자연현상에 대한 인간활동의 영향을 고찰할 수 있는 자료로서 앞으로 이에 대한 연구가 더 필요할 것으로 보인다. 본 논문에서 제시한 방법은 시계열자료의 단조적인 경향성을 분석하는 기법들에 대해 적용 가능하며, 이를 통하여 환경변화의 경향성에 대한 보다 정확한 분석과 판단이 가능해질 것으로 기대한다.
