Long term extreme wave data are essential for planning and designing coastal structures. Since the availability of the field data for the waters around Korean peninsula is limited to provide a reliable wave statistics, the wave climate information has been generated by means of long-term wave hindcasting using available meteorological data. KORDI(2005) has proposed extreme wave data at 106 stations off the Korean coast from 1979 to 2003. In this paper, extreme data sets of wave(KORDI, 2005) have been analyzed for best-fitting distribution functions, for which the spread parameter proposed by Goda(2004) is evaluated. The calculated values of the spread parameter are in good agreement with the values based on method of moment for parameter estimation. However, the spread parameter of extreme wave data has a representative value ranging from about 1.0 to 2.8 which is larger than some foreign coastal waters, it is necessary to review deep water design wave.
The distributions of heat and momentum fluxes on the surface over the oceans around the Korean Peninsula are obtained based on the surface-layer flux model of Kim and Kang (1994), and their seasonal variations are examined in the present study. the input data of the model is the oceanatmosphere data with a grid interval of 2$^{\circ}$ in longitude and latitude. The atmosphere data, which are the pressure, temperature, and specific humidity on the 1000 mb level for 3 year period of 1985∼1987, are obtained from the European center for Medium Range Forecast. The sea surface temperature (SST) is obtained from National Meteorological Center (NMC). The solar insolation and longwave radiation on the ocean surface are obtained, respectively, from the NASA satellite data and based on an emprical formula. It is shown from the net heat flux that the oceans near Korea lose heat to the atmosphere in January and October with the rates of 200∼ 400 Wm/SUP -2/ and 100 Wm/SUP -2/, respectively. But the oceans are heated by the atmosphere in April and July with about the same rate of 100 Wm/SUP -2/. The annualmean net heat flux is negative over the entire domain except the northern part of the Yellow Sea. The largest annual-mean cooling rate of about 120 Wm/SUP -2/ is appeared off the southwest of Japan. In the East Sea, the annual-mean cooling rate is 60∼90 Wm/SUP -2/ in the southern and northern parts and about 30 Wm/SUP -2/ in the middle part. The magnitude of wind stress in january is 3∼ 5 times bigger than those of the other months. As a result, the spatial pattern of annual-mean wind stress is similar to that of January. It is also shown that the annual-mean wind stress curl is negative. in the East China Sea and the South Sea,but it is positive in the northern part of the Yellow Sea.In the East sea,the stress curl is positive in the southeast and northern parts and negative in the northwestern part.

Representative tidal gauging (TG) stations are selected to cover the tidal characteristics of the Korean peninsula coastal seas, and the statistical parameters of the data are analysed from the perspective of the probability distribution at that TG station. The shape of the distribution in the Incheon and Gunsan TG stations, which are tide-dominated areas, shows two clear modes at HWONT and LWONT in the distributions, and in the Mokpo station, shows an asymmetric double peak distribution. In contrast, the frequency distribution shape shows a smoothed flat peak in the Jeju, Yeosu and Busan TG stations, and a single peak in the Pohang and Sokcho TG stations. The emersion and submersion equations suggested as the 6-parameter Gaussian mixture models in this study are accurate, and well fitted to the observed tidal elevation data. The ${\mu}_1$, ${\mu}_2$ parameters are highly correlated to the LWONT and HWONT, and the ${\sigma}_1$ and ${\sigma}_2$ parameters are also closely correlated to the mean tidal range. The ${\mu}_1$ and ${\mu}_2$ parameters coincide with the modes of the suggested probability distribution of the hourly tidal level data.
Sea-surface wind is an important variable in ocean-atmosphere interactions, leading to the changes in ocean surface currents and circulation, mixed layers, and heat flux. With the development of satellite technology, sea-surface winds data retrieved from scatterometer observation data have been used for various purposes. In a complex marine environment such as the Korean Peninsula coast, scatterometer-observed sea-surface wind is an important factor for analyzing ocean and atmospheric phenomena. Therefore, the validation results of wind accuracy can be used for diverse applications. In this study, the sea-surface winds derived from ASCAT (Advanced SCATterometer) mounted on MetOp-A/B (METeorological Operational Satellite-A/B) were validated compared to in-situ wind measurements at 16 marine buoy stations around the Korean Peninsula from January to December 2020. The buoy winds measured at a height of 4-5 m from the sea surface were converted to 10-m neutral winds using the LKB (Liu-Katsaros-Businger) model. The matchup procedure produced 5,544 and 10,051 collocation points for MetOp-A and MetOp-B, respectively. The root mean square errors (RMSE) were 1.36 and 1.28 m s-1, and bias errors amounted to 0.44 and 0.65 m s-1 for MetOp-A and MetOp-B, respectively. The wind directions of both scatterometers exhibited negative biases of -8.03° and -6.97° and RMSE values of 32.46° and 36.06° for MetOp-A and MetOp-B, respectively. These errors were likely associated with the stratification and dynamics of the marine-atmospheric boundary layer. In the seas around the Korean Peninsula, the sea-surface winds of the ASCAT tended to be more overestimated than the in-situ wind speeds, particularly at weak wind speeds. In addition, the closer the distance from the coast, the more the amplification of error. The present results could contribute to the development of a prediction model as improved input data and the understanding of air-sea interaction and impact of typhoons in the coastal regions around the Korean Peninsula.

Temperature variability at the upper layer related to climate regime shifts in the Korean waters was illustrated using water temperature, climate index. Three major climate regime shifts (CRS) in 1976, 1988 and 1998 in north Pacific region had an significant influence on the major marine ecosystems structure pattern. Three marginal seas around Korean peninsula; East Sea, East China Sea and Yellow Sea also got important impact from this kind of decadal shift. We used 10m sea water temperatures in four regions of Korean waters since 1950 to detect major fluctuation patterns both seasonally and also decadal shift. 1988 CRS was occurred in all of the study areas in most seasons however, 1998 CRS was only detected in the Yellow Sea and in the southern part of the East Sea. 1976 CRS was detected in all of the study area mainly in winter. After 1998 CRS, the water temperature in the southern part of the East Sea, East China Sea and Yellow Sea were going into decreased pattern; however, in the northern part of the East Sea, it was further shifted to increasing pattern which was started from 1988 CRS period.
National Institute of Fisheries Science conducted a total of 39 sighting surveys for marine mammals over 624 sighting days that covered 20,771 nautical miles in Korean waters during 2011-2020. Marine mammals were detected when 83.9% of the marine environment was less than or equal to three on the Beaufort wind scale. Thirteen species of marine mammals were identified, including two species of pinniped, with a majority of cetacean species. Frequently found species were narrow-ridged finless porpoise, followed by common dolphin, minke whale, Dall's porpoise, and Pacific white-sided dolphin. Narrow-ridged finless porpoises and minke whales were located in and offshore around the Korean peninsula, common and Pacific white-sided dolphins were exclusively found in the East Sea for most seasons. The other marine mammals were spotted in some seas and for limited durations.
In the seas around the Korean Peninsula, the seasonal cycle of zooplankton related to North Pacific regime shifts was investigated to understand the reaction of the ecosystem to climate change using long-term data on zooplankton biomass (1965-2000) and the abundance of four major zooplankton groups: copepods, amphipods, chaetognaths, and euphausiids (1978-2000). In general, the zooplankton biomass showed a large peak in spring and a small peak in autumnin Korean waters, but there was a slight difference in the peak time depending on the location and the period before and after the North Pacific regime shift. The zooplankton biomass showed conspicuous seasonal peaks in R-III (1990-2000) compared to R-I (1965-1976) and R-II (1977-1988), and the seasonal peak shifted from the autumn in R-II to the spring in R-III. The peak of copepods and euphausiids in abundance was from April to June, while chaetognaths peaked from August to October. We postulate that the time lag between the peaks for copepods and chaetognaths results from the predator-prey relationship. The regime shift in 1989 did not alter the seasonal cycle of the four major zooplankton groups, although it enhanced their production. The seasonal peaks of the four major zooplankton groups did not shift, while the seasonal peaks of the zooplankton biomass did shift. This was not only becausethe zooplankton biomass included other mesozooplankton groups but also because the abundance of the four major zooplankton groups increased significantly in spring.

Sea level rise and increase of the typhoon/hurricane intensity due to global warming have threaten coastal areas for residential and industrial and have been widely studied. In this study we showed our recent efforts on sea wind which is one of critical factors for safe maritime traffic and prediction for storm surges and waves. Currently, most of numerical weather models in korea do not have sufficient spatial and temporal resolutions, therefore we set up a find grid(about 9km) sea wind prediction system that predicts every 12 hours for three day using Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF). This system covers adjacent seas around korean peninsula Comparisons of two observed data, Ieodo Ocean Research station(IORS) and Yellow Sea Buoy(YSB), showed reasonable agreements and by data assimilation we will improve better accurate sea winds in near future.
Satellite altimeters have continuously observed sea surface height (SSH) in the global ocean for the past 30 years, providing clear evidence of the rise in global mean sea level based on observational data. Accurate altimeter-observed SSH is essential to study the spatial and temporal variability of SSH in regional seas. In this study, we used measurements from the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) and validate SSHs observed by satellite altimeters (Envisat, Jason-1, Jason-2, SARAL, Jason-3, and Sentinel-3A/B). Bias and root mean square error of SSH for each satellite ranged from 1.58 to 4.69 cm and 6.33 to 9.67 cm, respectively. As the matchup distance between satellite ground tracks and the IORS increased, the error of satellite SSHs significantly amplified. In order to validate the correction of the tide and atmospheric effect of the satellite data, the tide was estimated using harmonic analysis, and inverse barometer effect was calculated using atmospheric pressure data at the IORS. To achieve accurate tidal corrections for satellite SSH data in the seas around the Korean Peninsula, it was confirmed that improving the accuracy of tide data used in satellites is necessary.
The seismological observation of Korea began in 1905, and has been run with continuous earthquake network of observation, expanding to the advanced country, but still has some problems in accuracy and speed for report. There are many problems to announce the early warning system for earthquakes and tsunami in the East Sea because most events in the East Sea occur outside the seismic network. Therefore multi-waveform data conversion and composition from the surrounding countries such as Korea, Japan and Far East Russia are requested in order to improve more accurate determination of the earthquake parameters. We used FESNET(Far East Seismic Network) technology to analyze the May 29 and June 1 Earthquakes, and the March 20, 2005 Fukuoka Earthquake in this research, using the data sets of KMA, Japan(JMA/MIED) and IRIS stations. It was found out that use of FESNET resulted in more better outputs than that of a single network, either KMA or JMA stations.
