A Study on Constructing Korean Language Thesaurus (우리말 시소러스 작성(作成)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • In information storage and retrieval system, controlled vocabularies are generally used to improve the recall ratio and to guide for indexers/users to select correct indexing/searching terms by regulating their forms as well as meanings. Thesaurs, a type of controlled vocabulary, nowdays accept ed by most of database producers. The objective of this study is to develope a method of Korean Language Thesaurus construction. This study covers 1) the definition of thesaurus, 2) a literatural survey on term relations and thesaurus construction method, 3) a suggestion for a practical construction method, 4) the display format of thesuari, and 5) tests and the results.

  • With the development of semantic web technologies in information retrieval area, the necessity for thesaurus is recently increasing along with internet lexicons. A thesaurus is the combination of classification and a lexicon, and is the topic map of knowledge structure expressing relations among concepts(terms) subject to human knowledge activities such as learning and research using formally organized and controlled index terms for clarifying the context of superordinate and subordinate concepts. However, although thesaurus are regarded as essential tools for controlling and standardizing terms and searching and processing information efficiently, we do not have a Korean thesaurus for geology. To build a thesaurus, we need standardized and well-defined guidelines. The standardized guidelines enable efficient information management and help information users use correct information easily and conveniently. The present study purposed to build a thesaurus system with terms used in geology. For this, First, we surveyed related works for standardizing geological terms in Korea and other countries. Second, we defined geological topics in 15 areas and prepared a classification system(draft) for each topic. Third, based on the geological thesaurus classification system, we created the specification of geological thesaurus. Lastly, we designed and implemented an internet-based geological thesaurus system using the specification.

Development of OPAC and theories on online subject access (OPAC의 발전과정과 주제접근방법론)

  • This study aims at defining the concept of OPAC, tracing of research trends and development of it, and clarifying various methods of subject access and patterns of bibliographic searching in OPAC as well as strategies for improving to implement online catalogs. Although OPAC is so far the most user-friendly bibliographic searching method, there are still a lot of issues including online subject access in particular. Therefore a more effective and useful method for computer end-users have to be developed, for instance, improvement of an indexing system, a n.0, pplication of the classification system as a searching tool, a new design and construction of standardized thesaurus, betterment of user interface, introducing of expert system into bibliographic searching, establishment of subject authority file. Those would raise the success-rate of users seeking bibliographic information in the library catalogs. Korean libraries are in very early stage of OPAC implementation so that every efforts and concerns to improve strategies and techniques for subject access to OPAC have been strongly asked.

  • The goal of this study is to generate a structured document which improves the performance of an information retrieval system by using thesaurus, information on relations between words (terms), and to study on the technique for searching this structured document. In order to accomplish this goal, we propose a DODI (Depth -Oriented Decomposition Index) technique for the structured document and an algorithm to search for related information efficient]y through this index technique that uses a thesaurus. We establish a storage system by which the structured document generated by this index technique is saved in a database through OpenXML and XML documents are generated through ForXML methods.

  • This study is to develop a new system for conducting the information retrieval automatically. The system in this study is programmed by Delphi 4.0(PASCAL) and consists of automatic indexing, clustering technique, establishing and expressing term hierarchic relation, and automatic information retrieval technique. Thus this browser system can automatically control all the processes of information searching such as representation, generation and extension of queries and construction of searching strategy and feedback searching.

  • In this study, it enabled to perform keyword search on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) more flexibly by taking in the concept of geographic thesaurus in order to make the keyword search that was more efficiently. The search procedure depends on the history when user information is included. This study provides a system for keyword searching as well as check the validity of the system. Furthermore, by establishing this reference method, the search that took in the query of a user flexibly is attained rather than a chosen type reference system.

  • In this paper, the automatic keyword classification which is one of the automatic construction methods of retrieval thesaurus is experimented to the Korean language on the basis that the use of retrieval thesaurus would increase the efficiency of information retrieval in the natural language retrieval system searching machine-readable data base. Furthermore, this paper proposes the application methods. In this experiment, the automatic keyword classification was based on the assumption that semantic relationships between terms can be found out by the statistical patterns of terms occurring in a text.

A study on the Stochastic Model for Sentence Speech Understanding (문장음성 이해를 위한 확률모델에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose a stochastic model for sentence speech understanding using dictionary and thesaurus. The proposed model extracts words from an input speech or text into a sentence. A computer is sellected category of dictionary database compared the word extracting from the input sentence calculating a probability value to the compare results from stochastic model. At this time, computer read out upper dictionary information from the upper dictionary searching and extracting word compared input sentence caluclating value to the compare results from stochastic model. We compare adding the first and second probability value from the dictionary searching and the upper dictionary searching with threshold probability that we measure the sentence understanding rate. We evaluated the performance of the sentence speech understanding system by applying twenty questions game. As the experiment results, we got sentence speech understanding accuracy of 79.8%. In this case, probability ($\alpha$) of high level word is 0.9 and threshold probability ($\beta$) is 0.38.

  • To search based on the functional classification or provenance is not easy for users, and the key word-based information retrieval presents only simple words matching with the title of the records. The Presidential Archive of Korea developed a subject classification scheme to improve the convenience of searching for various records and came up with a subject thesaurus based on the scheme that utilizes the terms appearing on the title of the records and the terms used by the users who searched the portal or requested information disclosure. This research presents the development process of subject thesaurus. It also presents the utilization methods for records management work and services.

Subject Searching Using Controlled Vocabulary Versus Uncontrolled Vocaburary in Online Catalog System: Focusing on Multilingual Environment

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate search efficiency of controlled vocabulary versus uncontrolled vocabulary subject access in online catalog systems. The question of the effectiveness of controlled versus uncontrolled vocabulary in information retrieval has been raised in many literatures. A debate continues in the Library and Information Science Professions over the relative merit, appropriateness, and efficiency of uncontrolled vocabulary subject access in online catalog systems. Actually users used to combine uncontrolled vocabulary subject searching with controlled vocabulary subject searching. But the success of user's subject search depends on his choice of search terms. Also the technical developments that facilitate cooperation among information services in general make it increasingly possible for such cooperation to take place on an international level. In this study, several common types of vocabularies on online catalog systems are described and compared, especially usages of vocabularies in multilingual environment are analyzed.
