Autonomous exploration for radioactive sources localization based on radiation field reconstruction

  • In recent years, unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) have been used to search for lost or stolen radioactive sources to avoid radiation exposure for operators. To achieve autonomous localization of radioactive sources, the UGVs must have the ability to automatically determine the next radiation measurement location instead of following a predefined path. Also, the radiation field of radioactive sources has to be reconstructed or inverted utilizing discrete measurements to obtain the radiation intensity distribution in the area of interest. In this study, we propose an effective source localization framework and method, in which UGVs are able to autonomously explore in the radiation area to determine the location of radioactive sources through an iterative process: path planning, radiation field reconstruction and estimation of source location. In the search process, the next radiation measurement point of the UGVs is fully predicted by the design path planning algorithm. After obtaining the measurement points and their radiation measurements, the radiation field of radioactive sources is reconstructed by the Gaussian process regression (GPR) model based on machine learning method. Based on the reconstructed radiation field, the locations of radioactive sources can be determined by the peak analysis method. The proposed method is verified through extensive simulation experiments, and the real source localization experiment on a Cs-137 point source shows that the proposed method can accurately locate the radioactive source with an error of approximately 0.30 m. The experimental results reveal the important practicality of our proposed method for source autonomous localization tasks.

Impulse Based TOA Estimation Method Using Non-Periodic Transmission Pattern in LR-WPAN (LR-WPAN에서 비주기적 전송 패턴을 갖는 임펄스 기반의 TOA 추정 기법)

  • Recently Task Group (TG) 4 of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.15a has been recommended a system with ranging capability in existence of multiple Simultaneous operating piconets (SOPs) as well as low-cost, low-power. According to the ranging service, coherent and non-coherent based ranging schemes using ternary code have been adopted as a standard. However it is hard to estimate an accurate time of arrival (TOA) in case of using direct sequence based TOA estimation method because pulse repetition interval (PRI) offered by TG is more limited than the maximum excess delay (MED) of channel. To mitigate inter pulse interference (IPI) problem, this paper proposes a non-coherent TOA estimation scheme using non-periodic transmission (NPT) pattern. The proposed receiver is based on a non-coherent energy detection considering with motivation of low rate wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN). TOA information is estimated via proper comparison with a prescribed threshold after the sliding correlation and search back window (SBW) process for reducing TOA error. To verify the performance of proposed ranging scheme, two distinct channel models approved by IEEE 802.15.4a TG are considered. According to the simulation results, we could conclude that the proposed scheme have performed better performance than the conventional method on the existence of multiple SOPs.

Motion Estimation Architecture for Low Memory Access in H.264/AVC (메모리 접근 감소를 위한 움직임 예측기)

  • 움직임 추정(ME)은 동영상 압축에서 영상 화질과 인코더 속도에 대하여 중요한 역할을 하지만, 많은 수의 메모리 접근과 연산량이 발생한다. 기존의 움직임 추정 방법은 현재 프레임의 블록을 참조 프레임의 검색범위 내의 블록과 매칭하여 움직임 차이를 계산하여 움직인 위치를 추정하게 된다. H.264와 같은 최근의 압축 표준에서는 1/4화소 단위까지 움직임 예측을함으로써 영상 데이터 압축의 효율을 높일 수 있으나, 많은 양의 메모리 접근과 연산의 복잡도가 크게 증가하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 메모리 접근 횟수를 감소시키기 위하여 SAR(Search Area Reuse)알고리즘을 사용하여, 참조 프레임의 블록을 현재 프레임의 블록과 매칭하여 움직임 예측하는 방법을 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제안하고 있는 아키텍쳐는 현재프레임의 검색범위 내에 있는 데이타를 재사용함으로서 메모리 액세스를 줄일 수 있으며, 참조프레임의 한 블록당 1/4화소 단위까지의 연산을 한 번만 하게 되므로 메모리 접근 횟수 감소와 함께 연산의 복잡도도 줄일 수 있다.

  • 움직임 추정 및 보상 기법은 비디오 코딩 응용 분야에서 일반적으로 많이 사용되는 방법이나 많은 계산량으로 인하여 실시간 움직임 추정이 쉽지 않다. 본 논문에서는 낮은 비트율 비디오 코딩을 위한 전역 탐색 기법의 블록 정합 알고리즘의 복잡도를 줄이기 위하여 탐색 영역을 적응적으로 줄여주는 기법을 제안한다. 제안된 기법은 연속한 비디오 프레임에서 변위된 블록의 차이(displaced block difference)와 블록 구분 정보(block classification information) 등과 같은 상관성을 이용하여 탐색 영역의 범위를 적응적으로 조정한다. 실험을 통하여 제안된 기법이 전역 탐색 영역 기법과 비교하여 계산량에서 1/2의 계산량 이득이 있으며, 비슷한 MSE(mean square error) 성능을 가짐을 보인다.

  • In this paper, an efficient algorithm for estimation volume and surface area and a reconstruction algorithm for 3-dimensional graphics are presented.In order to improve computing efficiency, the graph theory is utilized and the algorithm to obtain proper contour points is developed by considering several tolerances. Search for the contour points is limited by the change of curvature of cross sectional contour to provide efficiency in searching the minimum cost path. In computer simulation of these algorithms, the results show that, for the tolerance values of 1.001 and 1.002, the execution time reduced to 66%-80% and the error for the measured value is less than 3%. The reconstructed 3-dimensional images from the cross sections can be analyzed in many directions using the graphic scheme.

  • In this research, the intensity of solar energy, which was injected to the different angle plane every hour day by day, was technically documented and quantitatively analyzed through actual observations. In order to group every days into days with similar intensity, graph was drawn with respect to time for every day and each area value under the curve was calculated. Then, the search for grouped days having similar intensity curve patterns was carried out and the optimum incident angle of absorber plate was derived to maximize the efficiency of solar energy systems.

H.264/AVC to MPEG-2 Video Transcoding by using Motion Vector Clustering (움직임벡터 군집화를 이용한 H.264/AVC에서 MPEG-2로의 비디오 트랜스코딩)

  • The H.264/AVC is increasingly used in broadcast video applications such as Internet Protocol television (IPTV), digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) because of high compression performance. But the H.264/AVC coded video can be delivered to the widespread end-user equipment for MPEG-2 after transcoding between this video standards. This paper suggests a new transcoding algorithm for H.264/AVC to MPEG-2 transcoder that uses motion vector clustering in order to reduce the complexity without loss of video quality. The proposed method is exploiting the motion information gathered during h.264 decoding stage. To reduce the search space for the MPEG-2 motion estimation, the predictive motion vector is selected with a least distortion of the candidated motion vectors. These candidate motion vectors are considering the correlation of direction and distance of motion vectors of variable blocks in H.264/AVC. And then the best predictive motion vector is refined with full-search in ${\pm}2$ pixel search area. Compared with a cascaded decoder-encoder, the proposed transcoder achieves computational complexity savings up to 64% with a similar PSNR at the constant bitrate(CBR).

  • To achieve the required services in the next-generation cellular telephone systems, the size of the cell become smaller and/or is of mixed macrocells and microcells. For more efficient system control, We make use of the mobile position and velocity information, provided that the mobility information is relatively accurate. In this paper, we propose an improved version of path-loss measurement algorithm introduced in literature[11]. The microcellular structure with severe multipath fading, reflection and refraction make mobile position and velocity estimation very difficult. In the proposed method, the pre-recorded path-loss informations, called the discrete position data base, are searched to estimate the position. Velocity estimation is obtained as a difference of the position values with respect to the time difference. Moving average filter is applied to smooth the estimated velocity and to reduce the error in the estimates. We also propose a method to simplify system implementation by reducing search area for discrete area database.

Fast Light Source Estimation Technique for Effective Synthesis of Mixed Reality Scene (효과적인 혼합현실 장면 생성을 위한 고속의 광원 추정 기법)

  • One of the fundamental elements in developing mixed reality applications is to effectively analyze and apply the environmental lighting information to image synthesis. In particular, interactive applications require to process dynamically varying lighting sources in real-time, reflecting them properly in rendering results. Previous related works are not often appropriate for this because they are usually designed to synthesize photorealistic images, generating too many, often exponentially increasing, light sources or having too heavy a computational complexity. In this paper, we present a fast light source estimation technique that aims to search for primary light sources on the fly from a sequence of video images taken by a camera equipped with a fisheye lens. In contrast to previous methods, our technique can adust the number of found light sources approximately to the size that a user specifies. Thus, it can be effectively used in Phong-illumination-model-based direct illumination or soft shadow generation through light sampling over area lights.

Adaptive Frame Rate Up-Conversion Algorithm using the Neighbouring Pixel Information and Bilateral Motion Estimation (이웃하는 블록 정보와 양방향 움직임 예측을 이용한 적응적 프레임 보간 기법)

  • In this paper, we propose a new Frame Rate Up-Conversion (FRUC) scheme to increase the frame rate from a lower number into a higher one and enhance the decoded video quality at the decoder. The proposed algorithm utilizes the preliminary frames of forward and backward direction using bilateral prediction. In the process of the preliminary frames, an additional interpolation is performed for the occlusion area because if the calculated value of the block with reference frame if larger than the predetermine thresholdn the block is selected as the occlusion area. In order to interpolate the occlusion area, we perform re-search to obtain the osiomal block considerhe osiomnumber of available ne block consblock. The experimental results show that performance of the proposed algorithm has better PSNR and visual quality than the conventional methods.
