A face seal comprising a metal ring and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) was installed in the driving part and suspension unit. The seal serves as a bearing and simultaneously prevents entry of foreign matter from external environment as well as internal oil leakage. Subsequently, the rubber-rod ring generates axial pressure owing to rubber elasticity (hardness), performs static sealing function between housing details and outer diameter of seal, and transmits rotational torque to the rotating support ring. In order to improve the durability of NBR, which performs the above tasks, and to effectively use it in tracked-vehicle applications at extreme temperatures, this study reports a mixing design approach to enhance cold and oil resistances of NBR.

This paper presents computed results of FEM analysis on the tribological contact behaviors of a primary sealing components of mechanical face seals for a small hydro-power turbine. The FEM computed results present that the contact area between seal rings and seal seats is very important for a good tribological performance such as low friction heating, low wear, high contact normal stress in a primary seal ing components. Based on the FEM computation, model III in which has a small sealing contact area shows low dilatation of primary sealing components, and high contact stress between a seal ring and a 1)seal seat.
O-ring seal is widely used for sealing pressure vessels and oil containers in various applications of mechanical equipments. The doughnut shape of the O-ring is very important components in most of the system assembly of mechanical apparatus. This paper presents the sealing force of a pressurized perfluoroelastomer O-ring, which is very important contact seal in sealing the semiconductor equipment. The sealing pressure is measured by experimental method and analyzed numerically by using the non-linear MARC finite element program. The seal tester is made to measure the contact force and displacement of the O-ring with an automatic control system of the working temperature. The results show the reasonable agreements between the computed FEM results and measured ones when the operating temperature is moderate temperature. But the compared values between the computed and tested results show a difference because of the increased temperature, which is related to the non-linear parameter of the O-ring material.
Elastomeric O-ring seals are widely used in static and dynamic applications. A compressed and highly pressurized O-ring seal inserted under laterally one-sided constrained condition has been analyzed experimentally and numerically. The deformed shape and extrusion length of the O-ring under high pressure has been measured by the computed tomography. Through the comparison of experimental and FE results, the numerical analysis technique has been verified. Using verified FE method, the contact stress profiles at sealing surfaces have been investigated and their relevance to the 0-ring performance evaluated based on stress-related and displacement-related parameters. It has been found that the contact stress profiles and deformation behaviors of the seal are affected by friction coefficient, gap clearance, and pressure considerably.
In this paper, the friction and wear characteristics of contact type sealing unit far a water turbine have been presented. The sealing unit for a small hydropower generation is to stop a leakage of circulating water from an outside of an impeller to an inside of a rolling bearing. The friction heating between a seal ring and a seal seat may radically increase a surface temperature in which increase a power loss and wear on the rubbing surface. The surface wear strongly affect to the seal life of a mechanical face seal. In this study, the hardness of a stainless steel in which is a heat-treated is 892.8 in Victors hardness and the hardness of silicone carbide of SiC is 714.1 in Victors hardness. The surface hardness of a heat-treated stainless steel is 25% high compared with that of a ceramic material of SiC. The contact modes of rubbing surfaces are a dry friction, a water film friction and a mixed friction that is contaminated by a dust, silt, and moistures, etc. These two factors of a contact rubbing modes and a material property are very important parameters on the tribological performance such as a friction and wear between a seal ring and a seal seat in primary sealing unit. The experimental result shows that the surface hardness of a seal material is very important on the friction coefficient and a wear volume. Thus, the results recommend higher hardness of a seal material, which may reduce a friction loss and increase a wear life of primary seal components.
In this paper, we present an experimental investigation of the frequency characteristics and a visual inspection of an oxidizer pump with a modified rear-floating ring seal for a 7-tonf turbopump. An oxidizer pump typically operates at high rotational speeds and under cryogenic conditions. Despite its low hydraulic efficiency, the floating ring seal is frequently employed as a leakage control solution for turbomachinery because it effectively reduces abrasion by friction. When the oxidizer pump starts up, the floating ring moves excursively but locks up stably against the pump casing when the contact pressure increases. The compressive force on the floating ring depends on the hydrodynamic forces induced by the flow through the floating ring. This force is controlled by the nose position of the floating ring. Based on a validation test for a 7-tonf turbopump with two types of floating rings, we concluded that the floating ring with a small diameter nose can move easily with a low contact pressure in the cooling path. This leads to instability of the pressure fluctuation around the floating ring. In contrast, a floating ring with a large diameter nose has a high contact pressure and attaches strongly to the casing, which causes wear and frictional oxidation between the contact surfaces of the impeller and the floating ring.

The noncontacting groove end face seal is one of various approaches to sealing gases with a single seal. Gas pumped into groove maintains operating gap and lubricates between primary ring and mating ring. So it removes heat and decreases face wear. In this paper, K-type and T-type grooved seals have been analyzed numerically using the finite element method. It explains the effects of groove shapes in gas seals along rotating speeds with a temperature gradient, face distortion, stress and so on. The calculated FEM results show the operating gap and rotating speed are strongly related to the leakages of a gas seal and that T-type groove seal shows a good thermal performance compared to K-type groove seal.

As related to rotordynamics, dynamic characteristics of the wear ring seal in high pressure multi-stage pump is calculated in the cases of labyrinth, damper and helically grooved types. The. results show that the labyrinth seal type has superior performance in the view point of leakage. However, in terms of rotordynamics view point, the damper seal type gains acceptable separate margin in critical speed range, while it has slightly inferior leakage performance compared to labyrinth seal type.

The X-ring is a elastomer with X-shaped cross-section used as a mechanical seal or gasket. Such a X-ring was equipped in a groove and compressed between two or more parts, acts as a seal on the interface. This study aims to detect contact stress and deformed shape of a X-shaped ring shell under various compressive contact conditions. A contact stress analysis was carried out by finite element analysis. The effect of compression rates and thickness design variable was analyzed. X-ring kept up the double seal until a compression rate of 20%. The maximum stresses of the X-ring was occurred at the top and bottom corner. The maximum contact stress of X-ring was rapidly increased according with the compression rate. The X-rings with thickness design variable from 1.3 mm to 1.5 mm had comparative low stress levels.

This study experimentally identifies the effects of end shape, clearance, total damper length, journal eccentricity ratio, oil supply pressure, and oil flow rate on the damping coefficient of a squeeze film damper (SFD) with piston ring seal ends and a central groove. The SFD is composed of a lubricating fluid flowing between the outer race of a rolling element bearing and cartridge, along with an anti-rotation pin to prevent the rotation of the outer race. The device provides additional viscous damping to a rotating system. Additionally, piston ring seals attached at both ends of the damper increase the damping coefficient of the rotating system by reducing oil leakage. Because these different design conditions affect the damping coefficient of an SFD, we perform experiments including different conditions. Tests show that the damping coefficient increases significantly in the SFD with piston ring seal ends compared with the SFD with open ends. The damping coefficient also increases with increasing total damper length and journal eccentricity ratio, and decreases with increasing clearance. Additionally, in contrast to the trend observed for the SFD with open ends, the damping coefficient for the SFD with piston ring seal ends increases with increasing supply pressure and flow rate as the frequency decreases but shows consistent results as the frequency increases.
