  • Seadike is a coastal structure constructed in the rear region of the foreshore to maximize its usability by preventing direct effect of wave. The expected construction field is determined under the design wave and tidal condition where minor wave overtopping is anticipated. Thus, the location of seadike is generally fixed at the highest site of the surrounding area with seadike crest height controlling the permissible range of wave overtopping volume. But a lot of times, frontal sand beach of the seadike continuously deforms due to incident waves, resulting failure in maintaining its initial slope. The erosion and deposition of the seadike front cause changes in the crest height and volume of wave overtopping and decrease in the setting depth of the seadike, which endangers seadike region as a result. In this study, the relation of local scouring and setting depth of the seadike front in the run-up region is examined by using 2D hydraulic model tests and numerical simulations by modified SBEACH model. As a result, the study learned that if appropriate boundary condition is applied to the modified SBEACH model, it is possible to create practical estimations on the local scouring at the seadike foot when erosive waves flow into the region.

  • This study is on the stability re-evaluation of armor stones in saemangum seadike according to recently increased sea-level and frequent high wave incoming and the results are in the following. The field inspection of armor stones in the seadike revealed that damages of armor stones have been caused by higher waves than designed waves and that the reconstruction of armor stones and concrete grouting method have been used as the reinforcement work. The result of numerical simulation of wave channel conducted to estimate the safety weight of armor stones influenced by flows revealed that the safety weight of armor stones in the seadike No.4 was estimated as 5.47 tons by using the Isbash method, which is about 122 % more than 4.49 tons estimated by using Van der Meer method. Therefore, in designing armor stones which can be influenced by high waves such as the case of Saemangum seadike, it is necessary to apply the safety weight method of armor stones, based on the Isbash method, which produced the significant figures among the safety weight methods using flows as well as the safety weight method using high waves based on the Hudson method.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of the sea bottom topology during construction of Saemangeum seadikes. Sea water depth and bottom topology in the Saemangeum area were measured every year and the surveyed data under construction of Saemangeum seadikes were analyzed and compared to the initial conditions before construction, There was erosion in the overall surveyed areas and the depth of erosion was approximately 53cm compared to the data in 1988. The center sandbanks of Seadike 2 did not show the great changes due to two main channels those were developed in northeast and southeast. The inland sandbanks of Seadike 4 showed the development of great erosion and deposition partially because of the changes in tide direction which developed as a result of the completion of Seadike 3 and the completion of a seadike of the Kunsan-Changhang industrial park at the north of Saemangeumm area.

  • The rubble base in the seadike structure is construct with rubble-mound of big size for stability of seadike against a tidal current velocity at the closing. The permeability gives an effect to stability of seadike a lot in The case which rubble base is founded long with a lake direction like objective area of this study. The permeability of the rubble base produced in the model test regarding filling condition and materials of the rubble base, It applied the result which it tests in seepage analysis and it analyzed a stability of piping, In this study, it diminishes the permeability of the rubble base to respect, the pit soil more the dredge soil is effective and it was analyzed with the fact that it increases the stability of lake direction slope against the piping.

  • The results of Saemangeum seadike field inspection and material testing of armor stones in order to analyze causes of abrasion according to material characteristics of seaside armor stones in Saemangeum seadike are in the following: 1. The armor stones in Saemangeum seadike have been constructed by using internal stones (mainly, sinsi stones) and external stones, which had less strength (77.3 %) and more abrasion rate (133.3 %) compared with sinsi stones. 2. The compressive strength and abrasion rate were compared between ordinary wave section and high wave section for the purpose of analyzing the influence of waves. In compressive strength, sinsi stones were 4.0 % stronger and external stones were 0.6 % stronger in ordinary wave section than those of high wave section in average. In the case of abrasion rate, sinsi stones were 3.0 % higher and external stones were 8.2 % higher in the high wave section than those in the ordinary section. 3. The result of comparing compressive strength according to a zone is that the compressive strength in the Intertidal area was less strong in most of the zones. 4. Considering that deviated stones are moving around over the surface of armor stones in situ, it is important to compare material characteristics. So the comparison test about this factor showed that deviated sinsi stones were stronger than armor stones in situ in terms of compressive strength and resistance to abrasion. Based on these results, abraded armor stones may have resulted from their durability. Therefore it is assumed that armor stones are likely to be abraded when deviated stones which are more durable are moving around over armor stones which are less durable.

  • Seapage condition by sea water may appears on sea dike due to the gap of tidal, which generated by the sealevel repeatedly moves up and down result of the change of tidal level. In this study, apparatus was developed to apply similitude after setting the critical section. It was found that the soil loss was dramatically increased by increasing hydraulic gradient step by step. Also, to understand the change of seadike which considered the changes of the change of tidal level and inside sealevel, it was executed the experiments which divided the sea level condition of inside by continually changes the sealevel difference which is outside of the high tide and ebb tide.

  • This study reviews qualitatively the flow characteristics around th tidal gap during seadike closures using a three-dimensional model for shallow water equations. The Princeton Ocean Model(POM) was adapted and applied to the Sihwa Seadike which was closed in 1994. The simulated flow patterns around the gap showed that tidal velocities increase with the cross-sectional area during ebb tide. The accelerated flow extended to wider zones passing the gap, and shock waves were generated. Vertical tidal velocity profiles were affected as the bottom scours developed beyond normal conditions.

  • The primary purpose of this study was to quantitatively examine whether there was a difference in the settling velocities of cohesive sediments in the Saemankeum artificial lake before and after the closure of the Saemankeum seadike. Through in situ sediment sampling and laboratory experiments, the settling velocities were estimated as a function of the suspension concentration and their physico-chemical properties, such as grain size distribution, the percentage of organic contents, mineralogical composition, etc. were also examined. In this study, their inter-relation with settling velocities were also analyzed qualitatively. The result of the settling tests for Saemankeum sediments showed that there was a big difference in the settling velocities before and after the closure of the Saemankeum seadike. Its settling velocities in a flocculated settling region became remarkably larger after the closure compared to those before the closure, while they were similar but relatively smaller in a hindered settling region. This was found to be mainly due to the difference in their grain size.
