Development of Structural Analysis System of Bow Flare Structure(1) - Prediction of Wave Impact Load Characteristics - (선수 구조부 구조해석 시스템 개발(1) - 파랑충격하중 특성의 추정 -)

  • The bow flare structure of a ship is designed considering wave impact loads largely caused by relative motion of the ship and wave at rough sea. Empirical design is still used because impact phenomenon and structural behaviour due to wave impact load can not examined accurately. The objective of this study is, as the first step, to predict wave impact loads giving the structural damages to the bow flare structure from the damage data inversely, using dynamic nonlinear finite element code LS/DYNA3D, and to perform various parametric studies of wave impact pressure curve for its characteristics, such as peak height, duration time, tail height, rise time, etc.. The followings were obtained from this study: Dynamic structural responses against wave impact loads are largely affected by impact pressure impulse whose amount during duration time until peak deformation is very important.

Optimal Design of Overtopping Wave Energy Converter Substructure based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics and Structural Analysis (SPH 및 구조해석에 기반한 월파수류형 파력발전기 하부구조물 최적 설계)

  • OWEC (Overtopping Wave Energy Converter) is a wave power generation system using the wave overtopping. The performance and safety of the OWEC are affected by wave characteristics, such as wave height, period. To mitigate this issue, optimal OWEC designs based on wave characteristics must be investigated. In this study, the environmental conditions along the Ulleungdo coast were used. The hydraulic efficiency of the OWEC was calculated using SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) by comparing 4 models that changed the substructure. As a result, it was possible to change the substructure. Through design optimization, a new truss-type structure, which is a substructure capable of carrying the design load, was proposed. Through a case study using member diameter and thickness as design variables, structural safety was secured under allowable stress conditions. Considering wave load, the natural frequency of the proposed structure was compared with the wave period of the relevant sea area. Harmonic response analysis was performed using wave with a 1-year return period as the load. The proposed substructure had a reduced response magnitude at the same exciting force, and achieved weight reduction of more than 32%.

Coupled Motion Simulation of the Mobile Harbor and Anti-Rolling Devices in Waves

  • The Mobile Harbor(MH) is a new transportation platform that can load and unload containers to and from very large container ships in the sea. This loading and unloading by crane can be performed with only very small movements of the MH in waves because MH is operated outside of the harbor. For this reason, an anti-rolling tank(ART) and an active mass driving system(AMD) were designed to reduce MH's roll motion, especially at the natural frequency of MH. In the conceptual design stage, it is difficult to confirm the design result of theses anti-rolling devices without modeling and simulation tools. Therefore, the coupled MH and anti-rolling devices' dynamic equations in waves were derived and a simulation program that can analyze the roll reduction performance in various conditions, such as sea state, wave direction, and so on, was developed. The coupled equations are constructed as an eight degrees of freedom (DOF) motion that consists of MH's six DOF dynamics and the ART's and AMD's control variables. In order to conveniently include the ART's and AMD's control dynamics in the time domain, MH's radiated wave force was described by an impulse response function derived by the damping coefficient obtained in the frequency domain, and wave exciting forces such as Froude-Krylov force and diffraction force and nonlinear buoyancy were calculated at every simulation time interval. Finally, the roll reduction performances of the designed anti-rolling devices were successfully assessed in the various loading and wave conditions by using a developed simulation program.

  • A heave motion of the offshore crane system with load is affected by unpredictable external factors. Therefore the offshore crane must satisfy rigorous requirements in terms of safety and efficiency. This paper intends to reduce the heave displacement of load position which is produced by rope extension and sea wave disturbance in vertical motion. In this system, the load position is compensated by the winch actuator control. The rope is modeled as a mass-damper-spring system, and a controller is designed by the input-output linearization method. The model system and the proposed control method are evaluated on the simulation results.

  • A ship repeatedly face free surface under rough sea conditions owing to relative motion with wave encounter. The impact pressure is transferred to the hull structure and causes structural damage. In this study, the bow flare slamming load of a container ship is estimated using computations fluid dynamics (CFD) and prescript formula according to various classifications. It is found that the bow flare slamming load calculated by the formulas of the common structural rule and ABS tends to be similar to the CFD results.

Analytical Research of Topside Installation in Mating phase with Crane Vessel

  • The installation of a topside structure can be categorized into the following stages: start, pre-lifting, lifting, lifted, rotating, positioning, lowering, mating, and end of installation. The transfer of the module onto the floating spar hull occurs in the last three stages, from lowering to the end. The coupled multi-body motions are calculated in both calm water and in irregular waves with a significant wave height (1.52m). The effects of the hydrodynamic interactions between the heavy lifting vessel and the spar hull during the lowering and mating stages are considered. The internal forces caused by the load transfer and ballasting are derived for the mating phases. The results of the internal forces for the calm water condition are compared with those in the irregular sea condition. Although the effect of the pitch motion on the relative vertical motion between the deck of the floating structure and the topside module is significant in the mating phases, the internal force induced pitch motion is too small to have this influence. However, the effect of the internal force on the wave-induced heave responses in the mating phases is noticeable in the irregular sea condition because transfer mass-induced draught changes for the floating structure are observed to have higher amplitudes than the external force induced responses. The impacts of the module on the spar hull in the mating phase are investigated.

Dynamic Analysis of Topside Module in Lifting Installation Phase

  • The installation phase for a topside module suggested can be divided into 9 stages, which include start, pre-lifting, lifting, lifted, rotating, positioning, lowering, mating, and end of installation. The transfer of the topside module from a transport barge to a crane vessel takes place in the first three stages, from start to lifting, while the transfer of the module onto a floating spar hull occurs in the last three stages, from lowering to the end.   • This study aims to analyze the performance of a submersible fish cage which was designed for developing an economical cage system can be applied in korean aquaculture environment easily. To analyze the performance of the designed cage a model test was carried out. In the test, inclination changes of the upper frame and mooring tensions of model cage were measured during the submerging and surfacing motion in still water and wave condition (period: 2s, wave height: 0.1, 0.2, 0.3m). As a result, in the still water condition the model cage kept horizontal balance and inclination degree of the upper frame was about $1^{\circ}$. In the wave condition, the model cage showed bilateral symmetric up-and-down motion but the average inclination degree of the upper frame was about $0^{\circ}$. When the model cage reached at a depth of 1m, the up-and-down motion of the cage was decreased by 12% compared with that of at the surface (period 2s, height 0.3m). In the same wave condition, the maximum and average line tension under the bottom position were about 8% and 11% respectively compared with that of at surface.

  • In general, the strength of hull structures can be estimated from stress evaluation considering static and hydro-dynamic load due to sea-wave. However, war ships such as submarine, have frequently experienced the underwater explosion and local structures of ship as well as hull girder can be damaged by the dynamic response excited from underwater non-contact explosion. When explosion happens at underwater, shock wave is radiated In early short time, then gas bubbles are generated, and expansion and contraction are repeated as they float to the surface. The shock wave causes the damage of equipment and its supporting structures, on the other hand, the hull girder strength can be lost by resonance between bubble pulsation and lowest ship natural vibration period. In this paper, the hydro-Impulse force due to bubble was calculated. Based on these results the hull girder strength of submarine was estimated from transient response analysis by using NASTRAN. Also, shock analysis for some equipment supporting structures was carried out by using DDAM. In order to evaluate the strength of these local structures due to shock wave.

Dynamic Behavior of Caisson Type Breakwater Considering Typhoon-induced Wave Loading Before and After Earthquakes (태풍 파랑과 지진을 연계한 케이슨식 방파제의 동적거동)

  • Recently, the frequency and intensity of typhoon-induced wave loading are increasing due to changed marine environments such as climate change. In addition, frequent earthquakes are causing a lot of damage around the world, including in Japan, Chile, Haiti, China, and Indonesia. In Korea, damage from typhoons has also been increasing since the 2000s, and the frequency and intensity of earthquakes are also increasing. Korea is surrounded by sea on three sides, so typhoons can cause a lot of damage to coastal structures, and earthquakes also cause a lot of damage to coastal structures. As such, the frequency and intensity of typhoon-induced wave loading and earthquakes are increasing both domestically and internationally, but there is no research linking typhoons and earthquakes. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis was performed for a total of four cases by linking typhoon waves and earthquakes to the caisson breakwater. Numerical analysis was performed by applying wave loads in Case 1 and seismic wave in Case 2, seismic wave after wave loads in Case 3, and wave loads after seismic wave in Case 4. As a result of the numerical analysis, it was confirmed that in Case 3 and Case 4, which linked a typhoon and earthquakes, the damage caused by each load increased compared to Case 1 and Case 2 because the load was applied while the existing ground strength was reduced. In addition, it was confirmed that the greatest damage occurred in Case 3, in which seismic wave were applied after the wave loads.
