  • The field surveys and the measurements of seawater temperatures were conducted every month from 1997 to 1999, and the distributions of seawater temperature were simulated and reproduced by a three dimensional hydrodynamic numerical model over the southern waters of Cheju island. In order to estimate the marine environmental capacity for the reception of the heat loads of cooling water discharged from Hwasoon Thermal Power Plant(HTPP) in the study area, the simulations for predicting the situation of unfavorable environment in which marine organisms might not be satisfied with change in seawater temperature were peformed using a three dimensional hydrodynamic numerical model by controlling quantitatively the heat loads of cooling water from HTPP Currently, HTPP discharges cooling water of 35.9℃ into the sea as much as 112,800m³/day in summer. As the results of simulations, the more the heat loads from the power plant increase, the more increase the seawater temperatures around the water areas adjacent to the power plant. In case the heat loads of cooling water from HTPP become about 5 times as high as the present loads, seawater temperatures at near-shore waters adjacent to HTPP appear to be increased to the extent of 0.5℃ above the existing seawater temperature in summer. The marine environmental capacity for the reception of thermal discharge from HTPP is estimated to be about 530×10/sup 6/kcal/day which is equivalent to the increase of a factor of 2 in the temperature of cooling water without any change in the discharge rate of cooling water or which is equivalent to the increase of a factor of 4.6 in the discharge rate of cooling water without any change in the temperature of cooling water. Comparing the case of the increase in the discharge rate of cooling water with the case of the increase in the temperature of cooling water on the basis of the same heat loads of 530×10/sup 6/kal/day, the former case is expected to increase seawater temperature a little higher and to extend the area affected by heat loads a little broader.

  • Deep Ocean Water is formed within restricted area including polar sea (high latitude) by cooling of surface seawater and globally circulated in the state of insolation with surface seawater. Although not as obvious as estuaries mixing, Brine groundwater is mixture of recirculated seawater and groundwater. Seawater having high osmotic pressure infiltrate into unconfined aquifer where is connected to the sea. The ions dissolved in seawater are present in constant proportions to each other and to the total salt content of seawater. However deviation in ion proportions have been observed in some brine groundwater. Some causes of these exception to the Rule of constant proportions are due to many chemical reactions between periphery soil and groundwater. While Deep Ocean Water (DOW) have a large quantity of functional trace metals and biological affinity relative to brine groundwater, DOW have relatively small amount of harmful bacteria and artificial pollutants.

  • Transport is essential in the farming process of farmed fish and is one of the physical stress factors such as sorting. The effect of water temperature and anesthesia during low salinity transport was confirmed. In the experimental group, the water temperature was set to 20℃ (natural water temperature, NWT), 15℃ (cooling water temperature, CWT) respectively, in water with a salinity concentration of 35‰, 15‰ and an anesthetic (anesthesia, Anes., Sigma USA) was diluted and mixed to 50 ppm. A styrofoam box (66×42×20 cm) was used as a transport container, and 8 flounder were accommodated and transported in a plastic bag injected with 3 ℓ of seawater and liquid oxygen. As a result of the study, the concentration of cortisol before transport increased significantly from 2.4±0.1 ng ml-1 in the experimental groups except for the CWT+35‰ group (16.7±12.8 ng ml-1). The K+ concentration slightly increased from 3.1±0.0 mEq l-1 before transport to 4.5±1.1 mEq l-1 in the NWT+15‰ group, showing no difference, and significantly increased in all other experimental groups. There was no effect on changes in blood characteristics, and water temperature and anesthetic had a negative effect on osmotic control due to stress. AST and ALT were not affected.

  • Corrosive environment may be generated within steam generators from condenser cooling water in-leakage. Theoretical analysis of the accumulation of chloride as a sea water impurity is being carried out for the condenser cooling water used at YGN-1,2 nuclear power stations. Calculations have shown that highly concentrated chloride solution would be produced within the steam generators in the case of sea water in-leakage. Maximum allowable design condenser leak rate(0.5 gpm) leads chloride concentration of 2.3 ppm at steam generetor and 0.6 ppm at hotwell with the maximum blowdown rate and condensate purification. Concentration factor at steam generator is dependent only on both blowdoum rate and condensate purification efficiency as follows, Concentration Factor(equation omitted)(B$\neq$O) Blowdown and condensate purification are evaluated as the only effective measures to remove impurities from the secondary systems.

  • Hydrocyclone has been widely used for the solid-liquid separation in many industrial sites because of its comparatively preferable applications that can be applied to wide-range particle sizes. If seawater with impurities flows through pumps or heat exchanger, it might cause an decrease in the efficiency of cooling system In this paper, we have suggested some methods of separating impurities from seawater in the cooling system by using a Hydrocyclone. The effects of design factors as solid concentration, cyclone inlet pressure, flow rate and diameter of underflow on the separating performance of the Hydrocyclone were investigated The results from this study are summarized as follows: 1) In proportion to the decrease of solid concentration, the efficiency of solid-liquid separation is improved. 2) According as the cyclone inlet pressure increases the efficiency of separation is improved. Conclusively, this research suggested that the Hydrocyclone will be used as a pre-treatment system of cooling water in machines, and eventually prevent unexpected accidents in engine systems.

  • A 450 m-long sediment section was recovered from Hole U1359D located at the eastern levee of the Jussieau submarine channel on the Wilkes Land continental rise (East Antarctica) during IODP Expedition 318. The age model for Hole U1359D was established by paleomagnetic stratigraphy and biostratigraphy, and the ages of core-top and core-bottom were estimated to be about 5 Ma and 13 Ma, respectively. Biogenic opal content during this period varied between 3% and 60%. In the Southern Ocean, high biogenic opal content generally represents warm climate characterized by the increased light availability due to the decrease of sea-ice distribution. The surface water productivity change in terms of biogenic opal content at about 10.2 Ma in the Wilkes Land continental rise was related to the development of Northern Component Water. After about 10.2 Ma, more production of Northern Component Water in the North Atlantic caused to increase heat transport to the Southern Ocean, resulting in the enhanced diatom production. Miocene isotope events (Mi4~Mi7), which are intermittent cooling intervals during the Miocene, appeared to be correlated to the low biogenic opal contents, but further refinement was required for precise correlation. Biogenic opal content decreased abruptly during 6 Ma to 5.5 Ma, which most likely corresponds to the Messinian salinity crisis. Short-term variation of biogenic opal content was related to the extent of sea-ice distribution associated with the location of Antarctic Polar Front that was controlled by glacial-interglacial paleoclimate change, although more precise dating and correlation will be necessary. Diatom production in the Wilkes Land continental rise increased during the interglacial periods because of the reduced sea-ice distribution and the southward movement of Antarctic Polar Front.

  • We measured the alkenone concentration of bulk sediments from a piston core collected from the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea in order to reconstruct past sea surface temperatures (SST). Sediment ages are well constrained by AMS $^{14}C$ dates of the planktonic foraminifera Globigerina bulloides. Coretop alkenone SST calibration with modern surface temperatures and sediment trap dat (Hong et al., 1996) indicate that the SST estimated from alkenones most likely represent the temperatures of late fall. Downcore variations in the alkenone saturation index indicate that between 19 and 15 kyr BP the surface waters were about $3^{\circ}C$ warmer than today. Between 15 and 11 kyr BP, the temperatures were about $3^{\circ}C$ lower than today. A rapid SST increase of about $3^{\circ}C$ occurred at approximately 10 kyr BP. After considering the factors which might influence the SST reconstruction from the $U^{k'}_{37}$ values, we conclude that the alkenone temperature estimates are reliable. The reason for glacial warming in the East Sea is not clear, although there is a possibility that it could be caused by shift in the season of maximum alkenone production from summer during the last glaciation to late fall during the Holocene. Cooling between 15 and 11 kyr BP may be due to inflow of cold water into the East Sea such as via the Oyashio Current or ice-melt water. Warming at the early Holocene could be due to inflow of the Tsushima Current into the East Sea through the Korea Strait.

  • Most merchant ships are supplied with the only essential fresh water from a port for economical cargo transportation and the reduction of a nevigation expense. And the deficient fresh water for a voyage is produced by fresh water generator with the various exhaust energy generated in the engine room on a voyage. At present, an evaporation type fresh water generator are extensively used on ship because the operating cost of it is lower than that of a reverse osmosis pressure type. This study introduce a development results on the large evaporation type fresh water generator enable to be used for large merchant ships. It is accomplished the performance test using the developed large fresh water generator.

  • A useful radiance-converting method was developed to convert the Landsat-7 ETM+thermal-infrared (TIR) band's radiance ($L_{{\lambda},L7/ETM+}$) to that of Landsat-5 TM TIR ($L_{{\lambda},L5/TM+})$ as: $L_{{\lambda},L5/TM}=0.9699{\times}L_{{\lambda},L7/ETM+}+0.1074\;(R^2=1)$. In addition, based on the radiance-converting equation and the linear relation between digital number (DN) and at-satellite radiance, a DN-converting equation can be established to convert DN value of the TIR band between Landsat-5 and Landsat-7. Via this method, it is easy to integrate Landsat-5 and Landsat-7 TIR data to retrieve the sea surface temperature (SST) in coastal waters on the basis of local empirical algorithms in which the radiance or DN of Lansat-5 and 7 TIR band is usually the only input independent variable. The method was employed in a local empirical algorithm in Daya Bay, China, to detect the thermal pollution of cooling water discharge from the Daya Bay nuclear power station (DNPS). This work demonstrates that radiance conversion is an effective approach to integration of Landsat-5 and Landsat-7 data in the process of a SST retrieval which is based on local empirical algorithms.
