  • We constructed the tidal chart of $M_2$ tide in the East Sea (Japan Sea) by an objective method. The sea level elevations at coastal stations are specified as Dirichlet boundary conditions, and the tidal constants inside of the East Sea basin are determined by the solution of the complex partial differential equation for the sea surface elevation. We studied the influences of the bottom topography and the tidal friction on the distribution of tidal chart inside of the basin. Using the results of basin-wide tidal model, we constructed a detailed tidal chart of the Ma tide off east of Korea.

  • To investigate characteristics of water masses and current structures around Noto Peninsula located in south-east coastal region of the East Sea, observation results of CREAMS (Circulations Research of the East Asian Marginal Seas) cruise and data report of oceanographic observation (Japan Meteorological Agency) in June, 1995 and 1996 were used. Water mass showing characteristics of Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) exists over the continental shelf. The depth is shallower than 200m and its width and thickness are 190km and 200m, respectively. Minimum level of dissolved oxygen occurred at the layers of maximum salinity. In the current structure, a noteworthy phenomenon is that the positions of the high-salinity water (more than 34.6 psu) match well with the distributions of the southwestward flow. In June of 1995 and June of 1996, a southwestward flow were separated into two parts along line C and line G. Current directions derived from the temperature and salinity match well with the distributions of the geostrophic currents in the vertical sections. The isothermal lines and the isohaline, which exist horizontally along the coastal area of the Japan, change abruptly at the frontal area of the Noto Peninsula, then turn toward the center of the East Sea. The dynamic depth anomalies centering around the region far northwest of the Noto Peninsula were relatively high, compared to those of other regions. The isopycnic surface (sigma-t, 25.8) existed near the surface in the central part of the East Sea, but, at the depth of 100m, the isopycnic surface was found in the coastal waters.

  • Wet deposition fluxes of ions at a coastal site in southwestern Japan in the period 1996-2003 were investigated to quantify the respective contributions of cyclone-, stationary front- and typhoon-associated rains. On average, the deposition fluxes of terrigenous-origin ions, nss-$SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NO_3{^-}$, $NH_4{^+}$ and nss-$Ca^{2+}$ were $37.6{\pm}7.3$, $16.3{\pm}4.2$, $19.0{\pm}3.4$ and $9.6{\pm}4.8meq\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, and those of $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$, the major ions in sea water, were $97.0{\pm}38.2$ and $115.2{\pm}48.2meq\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, respectively. Cyclone-associated rain constituted more than 50% of the fluxes of the terrigenous ions in almost all years. Stationary front-associated rain also contributed significantly, although the contribution was lower than the contribution by Cyclone-associated rain in almost all years. In particular, the wet deposition flux of nitrogen compounds of $NO_3{^-}$ and $NH_4{^+}$, which are important nutrients for micro-bioactivities in sea surface water, was dominated by cyclone-associated rain. Due to the extreme abundance of $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ in the rainwater of typhoons, the fluxes of $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ were contributed substantially by typhoons in years with typhoons' passage although cyclones were still the largest contributor to the fluxes. These results indicate the dominance of cyclones in the wet deposition to the East China Sea areas and the necessity to take rain types into account for a more accurate elucidation of the temporal and spatial variation of the wet deposition.

  • The geophysical implications of the observed heat flow in the Korean Peninsula are examined. The Peninsula can be devided into two typical regions of high (Zone 1) and normal heat flows (Zone 2), and anomalous sharp change of heat flow between two zones is noteworthy. Zone 1 (southeastern coast of the Peninsula) to be connected to the East Sea (=Japan Sea) of high heat flow region corresponds with the region of late-Mesozoic to Tertiary igneous activity. With the radioactive elements concentrated in the crust, the observed heat flow in Zone 2 can be almostly explained. While, only a half of the heat flow in Zone 1 is explained. As a possible explanation of high heat flow in Zone 1, partial melting in the lower crust is examined. The temperature of $800-900^{\circ}C$ calculated at the bottom of the crust excludes the possibility of partial melting or magma generation in the crust. Alternatively, a remaining thermal effect of late-Mesozoic to Tertiary igneous activity is considered. However, it appears that the thermal effect already disappeared and that the vertical temperature distribution reached at steady state 30 MY ago (= 10 MY after the igneous activities came to an end). After all, the existence of some other effective heat transfer in Zone 1 is strongly suggested. The high heat flow to be same kind of anomalous one of the East Sea can be recognized as a result of the trench-back-arc thermal flux. The plate subduction in the Japan Trench will generate an induced flow above the slab of the East Sea, a typical back-arc basin, and hence the induced flow will heat the surrounding lithosphere.

  • Two piston cores (94PC-2 and 95PC-4) taken from the East Sea (Sea of Japan) are studied to evaluate the paleoceanographic changes and its interaction with climatic variation. The bulk geochemistry of the non-biogenic fractions of 54 sediment samples is determined using X-ray fluorescence. Four geochemical stratigraphic units at both core sediments are recognized based on the variations in major element concentration. These chemical stratigraphic units correspond well with the sedimentological and paleontological facies. Source materials are considered as basic and/or intermediate rocks judging from silica content. A distinctive boundary around 11 kyr may correspond to Younger Dryas event. The switch of most major elements at this level and the distinctive changes in concentration of typical terrigenous elements (TiO$_2$ and Al$_2$O$_3$) are the strong evidence for the difference in sources of terrigenous materials. The weathering indices exhibit high degree in Core 94PC-2 and low degree in Core 95PC-4. The changes in weathering degree can be distinguished by the lowest value occurred at 11 kyr in Core 94PC-2 and by a gradual decrease from top to bottom in Core 95PC-4. The profiles of potassium and sodium exhibit specific excursions between the Holocene and the late Pleistocene. This implies that sediments of the two cores originating from different sources with different weathering degrees. The distinct two-group distributions in K$_2$O/CaO vs. Na$_2$O/K$_2$O also support the difference in provenance of aluminosilicate materials at the boundary of 11 kyr. Thus, supply patterns of terrigenous materials are stable in Holocene and more complicated in the last glacial period.

  • Phytoplankton samples, collected about twenty day interval on May of 1967, at same twenty-one stations located in the north-eastern Korea Strait were examined in an attempt to determine the specific distribution and abundance of phytoplankton. Water bottle samples preserved with neutralized formula were used for the phytoplankton study. In May, water temperature and salinity show both lower at the sea of Korea side than that of Japan side, and both indicate gradually higher to the sea of Japan side. Fourty-six species of diatoms and three species of dinoflagellates in early May, and thirty-six species of diatoms and six species of dinoflagellates in the May were detected. Among them thirty species of diatoms and two species of dinoflagellates were appeared commonly in both cruise. Chaetoceros curvisetus and Rhizosolenia castracanei were wide distributed species, and Leptocylindrus danicus was the most numerous species at this sea in May. In generally, the sea of Korea side was more rich in species and numbers of phytoplankton.

  • To understand general status of the national wind environment and to distinguish potential areas to be developed as a largescale wind farm, a synoptic wind map of the Korean Peninsula is established by processing remote sensing data of the satellite, NASA QuikSCAT which Is deployed for the SeaWinds Project since 1999. According to the validation results obtained by comparing with the measurement data of marine buoys of KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration), the cross-correlation factor Is greatly Improved up to 0.87 by blending the sea-surface dat3 of QuikSCAT with NCEP/NCAR CDAS data. It is found from the established synoptic wind map that the wind speed in winter is prominent temporally and the South Sea shows high energy density up to the wind class 6 spatially. The reason is deduced that the northwest winds through the yellow Sea and the northeast winds through the East Sea derived by the low-pressure developed in Japan are accelerated passing through the Korea Channel and formed high wind energy region in the South Sea; the same trends are confirmed by the statistical analysis of meteorological observation data of KMA.

  • The management of water quality and fishery resources with a major environmental problem in eutrophic coastal sea is studied. The numerical experiments using the water-sediment quality model (WSQM) were carried out for the management of water quality at the Seto Inland Sea in Japan. The results of long-term water quality simulation showed responses of seawater quality to input loads to vary in different localities. A formula roughly forecasting water qualify to estimate the effect of loading abatement was proposed. The simulation for the improvement of seawater quality showed the abatements of nutrient loads such as total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) as well as organic loads such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) to be peformed in the eastern Seto Inland Sea from Bisan Seto to Osaka Bay. On the other hand, it is indicated that the increase of loading leads to the increase of primary production. while not straightly to the increase of fish production for the catch of fisheries.

  • A simple analytic model of the sea surface temperature(SST) is developed in order to understand the effects of the Asian monsoon and the Kuroshio on the annual variations of SST by the Asian monsoon is almost in phase with the incoming radiation whereas that by the Kuroshio is out of phase with the incoming radiation. In the Yellow Sea, due to the heat advection by the Asian monsoon, the yearly mean SST is low and the annual range of SST exceeds 20$^{\circ}C$. The annual range of SST in the northwestern Japan Sea is large because of the combined effects of the Asian monsoon and the cold water advection. In the Kuroshio and in the Tsushima Current regions, the annual range of SST is small and the mean SST is high due to the heat advection by warm currents.

  • Deep sea water exists at depths of over 200m under the sea. As no sunlight reaches it, photosynthesis does not take place within it, and it contains no organic matter. In addition, its temperature is maintained at a stable low level throughout the year, so it does not get mixed with the sea water on the surface. It contains a large amount of nutritious salts, whose cleanness is maintained. It is a marine resource that has matured for a long period of time. Research into deep sea water, which started in the 1970s, has been made around the whole world, including the USA and Japan. In Korea, research has been active in this area since 2000. As there has been a good amount of research into industrial applications for deep sea water, since 1993, patents for the relevant technologies have been applied. This paper intends to provide a resource to researchers of deep sea water, by summarizing of all domestic deep sea water-related patents applied with Korean Intellectual Property Office from 1993 to 2008. This research was conducted using a computer and KIPRIS Database owned by the Korea Institute of Patent Information. 'Deep sea water' was used as the search keyword. A total of 222 Korean patents relating to deep sea water have been registered on the basis of IPC. Of these, 126 patents relate to the manufacturing and the treatment of foods, foodstuffs, or non-alcoholic beverages(A23L), while 50 patents relate to the production for medical, dental, or cosmetic purposes(A61K). 38 patents relate to water purification, treatment of wastewater, sewage and sludge (C02F), while 8 patents relate to fishery and farming(A01K). In summary, it was found that studies for the practical use of deep sea water have been conducted in relation to the manufacturing and the treatment of foods, foodstuffs, beverages, and cosmetics.
