절식 후 먹이 재 공급시 강도다리P(latichthys stellatus)의 생리·조직학적 특성 (Physiological and Histological Characteristics of Starry Flounder Platichthys stellatus after Starvation and Re-feeding)

  • This study was conducted to determine the physiological and histological characteristics of starry flounder Platichthys stellatus juveniles to undergo a short/long starvation period and subsequent re-feeding with 2 weeks interval for 65 days. All findings from this study indicate the possibility of a very rapid recovery possibility of starry flounder after short starvation period for 2 or 4 weeks. The mean body weight after 2 and 4 weeks starvation were not significantly different after 65 days. However, the body weight of 6 and 8 weeks starved fishes showed significantly low value than 2 weeks starved fishes. All biomarkers, liver somatic index, RNA/DNA ratio and blood chemistry, in this study showed fast recovery possibility after re-feeding of starry flounder. During the starvation and recovery process, they showed distinct increasing and decreasing tendency. From 21-28 days after re-feeding, most biomarkers reached to their maximum value and thereafter decreased again in 2, 4 and 6 weeks starvation and re-feeding groups. It could be interpreted as a compensatory growth and strategical action against starvation.

Antifreeze Activity in Temperate Fish from the East Sea, Korea

  • Antifreeze proteins and glycoproteins [AF(G)Ps] constitute a group of proteins that lower the freezing but not the melting points of aqueous solutions, enabling polar and north-temperate fish to survive in ice-laden environments. However, little is known about antifreeze activity in temperate fish; such work would extend our knowledge on the functions and evolution of AF(G)Ps. In the present study, we screened for antifreeze activity in temperate fish caught off the coast of Jumunjin ($37.89^{\circ}N$), Gangneung, Korea. Thermal hysteresis (TH) and the ability to inhibit ice recrystallization (IR) in blood, liver, and muscle samples from nine fish were examined to assess antifreeze activity. As the East Sea off the coast of Jumunjin is ice-free year round, we thought it most unlikely that the fish would express antifreeze proteins. Surprisingly, the blood of Pleurogrammus azonus and three types of tissue from Gymnocanthus herzensteini, Zoarces gilli and Kareius bicoloratus exhibited measurable TH values together with the ability to trigger characteristic morphological changes in ice crystals. Blood samples from the three species also evidenced ice recrystallization (IR) inhibition. This implies that AF(G)Ps or other antifreeze-like substances are present in temperate fish even under nonfreezing conditions. These results contribute to our understanding of the functions and origins of antifreeze activity in fish.

진전 변증에 관한 문헌적 고찰 - 중국 논문 중심으로 - (Literature Review on Syndrome Differentiation of Tremor, Focusing on Chinese Journals)

  • Background : It was not enough to apply three kinds of syndrome differentiation in our oriental medical textbook to tremor's treatment according to reports of Korea and traditional medical textbook of China. Objective : To investigate syndrome differentiations by types of diseases related to tremor through Chinese journals review and to suggest adding possible syndrome differentiations. Methods : Literature search was performed using China Academic Journal (CAJ), the search engine of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) from January 1994 to December 2009. Searching key words were Chinese characters in combination meaning tremor, paralysis agitans, and syndrome differentiation. We included all types of articles that explained or referred to definite syndrome differentiations. The symptoms and oriental medications by syndrome differentiation in selected articles were extracted and summarized. Results : 56 Chinese journals were ultimately selected. 37 kinds of syndrome differentiations about tremor were investigated, which included dual deficiency of qi and blood (氣血兩虛) quoted 31 times, liver-kidney yin deficiency (肝腎陰虧) 23 times, liver-kidney deficiency (肝腎不足) 21 times, and phlegm-heat stirring wind (痰熱動風) 20 times. 37 kinds of syndrome differentiation could by group into eight types, such as liver-kidney yin deficiency (肝腎陰虧), dual deficiency of qi and blood (氣血兩虛), phlegm-heat stirring wind (痰熱動風), heart deficiency and spirit weakness (心虛神弱), blood stasis due to qi stagnation (氣滯血瘀), sea of marrow deficiency (髓海不足), liver qi depression (肝氣鬱結), and liver yang transforming into wind (肝陽化風). Conclusion : We suggest that the syndrome differentiations of tremor, such as heart deficiency and spirit weakness (心虛神弱), blood stasis due to qi stagnation (氣滯血瘀), sea of marrow deficiency (髓海不足), liver qi depression (肝氣鬱結), and liver yang transforming into wind (肝陽化風), can be added to liver-kidney deficiency (肝腎不足), dual deficiency of qi and blood (氣血兩虛), and phlegm-heat stirring wind (痰熱動風) of the textbook. Further systematic research will be needed on them.

Serum Thyroid Hormone Levels in Wild and Captive Sea Turtles

  • Blood samples collected from green (chelonia mydas), loggerhead (caretta caretta), and Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) sea turtles were analyzed by radioimmunoassay to detect seasonal variations in thyroid hormones and compare levels in wild and captive individuals. Sexual dimorphism in the annual cycle of thyroxine was observed in adult Kemp's ridley. No differences were observed between immature male and female green and loggerhead sea turtles. The level of triiodothyronine was consistently low relative to thyroxine in all species investigated, and captive sea turtles exhibit higher plasms thyroid levels than do wild ones.

함정 기관실내 활동의 순환 및 호흡 기능에 대한 영향 (Changes in Circulatory and Respiratory Activities Observed on Men in an Engine Room of a Navy Ship)

  • Circulatory and respiratory activities were observed in men exposed to the environment of engine room of a cruising Republic of Korea Navy ship and compared to the control values obtained in an ordinary laboratory room on land. The environment of an engine room of cruising navy ship was presumed to be a multiple stress acting on men. The environment of the engine room included high temperature $(35-42^{\circ}C)$, low relative humidity (20-38% saturation), vibration (about 7 cycles per second), rolling and pitching of ship and noises. Sixteen men were divided into two groups consisted of each 8 subjects. Subjects of sea duty group had experience of continuous on board duty averaging 3.5 years. Men of land duty group had no experience of on board activity. On land observations were made on one day prior to the boarding and leaving the port and four days after landing. In between observations in the engine room were made on the first, 5 th, 9 th, 12 th, and 14 th day of on board activity. The whole experimental period lasted for 20 days. Measurements on circulatory and respiratory parameters were at standing resting state (after 30 minutes standing in the case of on land study and 15 minutes in engine room study) and within one minute after cessation of on the spot running of which rhythm was 30/min. and lasted for 5 minutes. Oxygen consumption and pulmonary function test were done in the period of two minutes from the 3rd to 5th minutes of running. The following results were obtained. 1. Body temperature showed no change regardless of group difference or on land or on board measurements. 2. Pulse rate increased markedly after boarding the ship id both groups. Pulse rate increased from the first day on board at rest and after exercise as compared to the on land control value. This increase in pulse rate was more marked after exercise. Sea duty group showed less increase in pulse rate at rest than the land duty group. Standing and resting pulse rate of sea duty group on lam was 81 and increased to 87 at the 5th day on board and remained smaller than the land duty group throughout the period on board. Control standing and resting pulse rate of land duty group on land was 76 and reached 89 at the 9th day on board and thereafter decreased a little. Pulse rate of land duty group at rest on board remained greater than that of sea duty group throughout the period on board. 3. Systolic blood pressure of sea duty group increased after boarding the ship and remained higher than the control value on land. In the land duty group, however, systolic blood pressure decreased during the period on board the ship. Diastolic blood pressure decreased in both groups. 4. Resting breathing rate of land duty group increased and remained higher than the control value on land. In sea duty group, however, resting breathing rate showed a transient increase on the 1st day on board and decreased thereafter to the control value on land and kept the same level throughout the period of cruise. Absolute value of breathing rate in the sea duty group was greater than the land duty group both at rest and after exercise. 5. There was a lowering of breathing efficiency in both groups. Thus, increases in tidal volume and minute ventilation volume and decreases in maximum breathing capacity, vital capacity, capacity ratio and air velocity Index were observed after boarding the ship. An increase in ventilation equivalent was also observed in both groups. The lowering of breathing efficiency was more marked in the land duty group than the sea duty group. 6. Energy expediture increased in both groups during their stay on the ship and was more marked in the sea duty group. 7, Lactate concentration in venous blood at rest and after exercise increased after boarding the ship and no group difference was observed.

Anti-hyperlipidemia and Anti-arteriosclerosis Effects of Laminaria japonica in Sprague-Dawley Rats

  • The anti-hyperlipidemic effects of dietary supplementation with sea tangle Laminaria japonica were investigated using an animal model in which normal rats were fed either sea tangle, sea tangle ethanol extract (EE-ST) and sea tangle extracted residue (ER-ST). Total lipid and triglyceride levels in the serum were significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in rats fed ER-ST at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight when compared to hyperlipidemic control rats. Significant decreases in serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels also occurred in rats fed ER-ST at 200 mg/kg body weight. In addition, the atherosclerosis index and superoxide dismutase in blood lipids were significantly (P < 0.05) lowered in rats fed ER-ST at 200 mg/kg body weight as compared to control rats. In conclusion, sea tangle and ER-ST exhibited beneficial anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-arteriosclerosis effects.

흰다리새우 유생의 저염분 순치방법에 따른 생화학적 특성변화 (Effect of Acclimation Methods on Physiological Status of White Shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei Larvae to Low Salinities)

  • 본 연구는 흰다리새우 초기유생이 (Postlarvae 15) 4 psu 저염분 순치 시 생리학적 변화에 관한 연구로서 순치방법, 즉 일반 해수를 비교구로 하고 8시간마다 빠르게 염분을 50%씩 감소를 한 실험구 (fast acclimation; F.A.)와 하루에 50%씩 천천히 염분을 감소시킨 실험구 (slow acclimation; S.A.)를 설정하여 생리학적 변화를 비교하였다. 생존율, gloucose와 혈중 요소성 질소의 함량이 순치방법에 따라 유의적인 차이를 보이지 않았으나 이온의 조성은 순치방법에 따라 차이를 보였다. 저염분에 순치된 새우의 체액 조성 중 마그네슘과 나트륨은 염분 32 psu에서 보다 낮은 농도를 보였다. 특히 나트륨 농도는 직접적으로 새우의 삼투압 조절에 영향을 미치는데 빠르게 순치를 시킨 F.A. 실험구에서 급격히 나트륨 농도가 감소하는 것으로 나타났다 (염분 32 psu에서 16 psu로 감소). 순치과정에서 새우의 스트레스를 줄이기 위해서는 처음 50% 염분을 감소시키는 과정은 8시간 이상으로 유지하고 그 이후에는 빠르게 순치하는 방법을 적용하는 것이 바람직할 것으로 파악되었다.

Vibrio damsela의 분리연구 (Studies on the Isolation of Vibrio damsela)

  • Authors studied on the isolation of V. damsela from sea water, fish and shellfish at the Keoje Hae keumkang on the southern sea and at Hongdo island and Heucksan island on the western sea of Korea from May to September in 1986. Authors investigated for the isolated strains to bacteriological identification, hemolysis about various erythrocytes and antibiotic susceptibilities. The results obtained were as follows: 1. V. damsela was isolated 14 strains from total 383 specimens; 233 cases of sea water, 40 cases of fish and 110 cases of shellfish, respectively. Eight strains were isolated from sea water and 6 strains were isolated from shellfish. 2. The biochemical characteristics which differentiate it from other Vibrio species were indole negative, ornithine negative, Voges-Proskauer positive, arginine positive, galactose positive, glucose positive, maltose positive, mannose positive, trehalose positive, and growth in nutrient broth with 1% to 6% NaCl. 3. On hemolysis reaction on blood agar media using human, rabbit and guinea pig erythrocytes, human erythrocytes were 11 strain positive, rabbit erythrocytes were 12 strain positive and guinea pig erythrocytes were 13 strain positive. 4. Senistivity test using with chemotherapeutic agents of "BioLab" Microbial Sensitivity Test Discs were generally sensitived to amikacin, ampicillin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, erythromycin, gentamycin, kanamycin, methicillin, penicillin, streptomycin, tetracycline and tobramycin, respectively, but were resistant to lincomycin.

다시마 보충과 운동훈련이 흰쥐의 혈당과 혈중지질에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Sea Tangle Supplementation and Exercise Training on Blood Glucose and Lipid Profile in Rats)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 다시마투여와 운동트레이닝이 흰쥐의 혈당과 지질성분에 미치는 영향을 규명하기 위함이다. 4주령의 수켯 쥐 27마리를 대조군(C, n=9), 다시마투여군(D, n=9)과 다시마투여와 운동트레이닝군(D+T, n=9)으로 나누었다. 운동트레이닝은 6주간 1주일에 5회, 30분간 트레드밀위에서 실시하였다. 혈당(C:$175.9{\pm}47.5$, D:$173.9{\pm}34.0$, D+T:$165.0{\pm}38.0\;mg/dl$)과 중성지질(C:$251.1{\pm}91.8$, D:$215.0{\pm}90.0$, D+T:$200.0{\pm}89.3$)의 집단 간의 차이는 존재하지 않았다. 콜레스테롤수치는 D+T군($81.8{\pm}11.2$)이 다른 두집단에 비해 낮았다(C:$103.0{\pm}13.5$, D:$102.1{\pm}14.5$). HDL-C의 수치는 D+T군($40.9{\pm}9.7$)이 상대적으로 다른 두집단에 비해 높았다(C:$32.6{\pm}3.8$, D:$31.7{\pm}7.3$). D군($98.0{\pm}41.0$)의 LDL-C수치는 통계적으로 C군($114.5{\pm}41.8$)보다 낮았으며, D+T군($91.2{\pm}41.7$)보다 높았다. 결론적으로, 다시마투여와 운동트레이닝은 혈중지질에 긍정적인 효과를 가져왔다.

다시마 분말과 밥을 이용한 햄버거 패티가 식후 혈당과 혈중 지질 농도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Hamburger Patties Added Sea Tangle (Laminaria japonica) Powder and/or Cooked Rice on Postprandial Blood Glucose and Lipid Levels)

  • 본 연구는 햄버거 패티 재료 중 육류의 일부를 다시마 분말 또는 다시마 분말을 함유한 밥으로 대체하여 식후 혈당과 혈장 지질 농도에 미치는 영향이 개선되는지 알아보고자 수행되었다. 표준패티 C와 시험패티 L, LI 및 LII를 제조하였다. L은 육류의 2.5%를 다시마 분말로 대체하였고, LI과 LII는 각각 육류의 25%와 50%를 다시마 분말을 함유한 밥으로 대체하여 제조했다. 인체시험 대상자는 외견상 건강하고 혈당과 혈장 지질 농도가 정상이며 본 실험에 참여하고자 자발적으로 동의서를 작성한 성인 여성 10명이었다. 이들 대상자에게 매 시험 시작 전 사흘 동안 영양적으로 균형 잡힌 식사를 제공했다. 각각의 패티를 200 g씩 섭취하게 하였으며, 섭취 전에 공복 혈액을 채취하였고, 섭취 후 30분, 60분, 120분, 180분 및 240분에 채혈하였다. C는 섭취 후 240분까지 혈당을 크게 올렸고 중성지방 농도는 미미하게 올렸으며, LDL-콜레스테롤 농도를 상당히 높인 반면에 HDL-콜레스테롤 농도를 현저하게 낮추어 총 콜레스테롤 농도를 약간 낮추는 결과를 나타냈다. 이에 비해 L은 혈당을 전혀 높이지 않았으며, 중성지방 농도의 저하 효과는 거의 없었으나 총 콜레스테롤 농도를 크게 낮추었는데, 이는 HDL-콜레스테롤 농도도 떨어졌지만 LDL-콜레스테롤 농도의 저하가 크게 기여한 결과였다. 한편 LI과 LII는 혈당은 C와 비슷하게 올렸지만, 중성지방 농도를 현저하게 낮추었고, 총 콜레스테롤 농도를 L과 비슷한 양상으로 낮추었다. LI과 LII는 L에 비해 비록 통계적 유의성은 없었으나, LDL-콜레스테롤 농도의 저하 효과가 약한 편이었다. 반면에 HDL-콜레스테롤 농도를 낮춘 효과는 비슷했다. 이러한 연구결과는 햄버거 패티의 재료 중 육류 일부를 다시마 분말로 대체하거나 또는 다시마 분말을 함유한 밥으로 대체함으로써 식후 혈당이나 혈장 지질 양상을 개선시키는 건강기능성 패티의 개발 가능성을 증명해준다. 혈당 상승을 경계해야 할 사람에게는 혈당저하 효과가 강력한 다시마 분말로 육류 2.5%를 대체한 L이 적합하며, 중성지방이나 콜레스테롤 농도의 상승을 억제해야 할 사람에게는 다시마 분말을 함유한 밥으로 육류의 25% 또는 50%을 대체한 LI과 LII가 유용할 것이다. 즉, 혈당이나 혈장 지질 농도가 정상인 사람에서 확인되었는바 고혈당이나 고지혈증을 지닌 사람에서는 그 효과가 더 크게 나타날 것이라 추측되며 향후 확인해야 할 과제라고 생각한다.
