  • A single specimen of a juvenile Stethojulis trilineata was first collected from the coastal waters of Ulsan, Korea, in October 2012. This species is characterized by IX dorsal fin spines, 26 lateral line scales, 25 vertebrae, dark spots between the 10th and 11th dorsal fin rays, and a caudal peduncle region. The new Korean name proposed is "Se-jul-mu-ji-gae-nol-rae-gi" for S. trilineata.

  • It is so difficult to small amounts of two or more fluid species into single in microchannel because flows are usually laminar. In this regard multilamination micro mixer including recirculation zone is presented. Alternating feed micro channels make multilamination and converging-diverging channels form recirculation zone. Multilamination with geometric focusing decreases diffusion path ana recirculation zones make vortex. In this paper flow patterns and mixing properties of multilamination micro mixer including recirculation zone were investigated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The CFD results provided qualitative information on mixing.

  • Food items of the five species of marine cladocerans were reported to be largely confined to centric diatoms. Reexamination of the prey items, however, revealed that flagellar organisms were also well fed by cladocerans. This additional finding suggests that marine cladocerans might extend their food items to weakly motile flagellates e.g., Prorocentrum micans, Protoperidinium sp. and unidentified flagellates.

  • One hundred one years have passed since Metchnikoff made his first scientific contribution to probiotics study. Intestinal lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for humans are closely associated with the host's health because LAB is an important biodefense factor in preventing colonization and subsequent proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the intestine. A probiotic is recently defined as "live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amount confer a health benefit on the host". Some species of LAB have been claimed as probiotics, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei, L. fermentum, L. plantarum, L. reuteri, and Lactococcus lactis. For understanding the general mechanism of probiotics, this paper would explore the early studies relating to probiotics and intestinal microbiota, and briefly introduce the Prolongation of Life written by Elie Metctmikoff.

  • Twelve strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus isolated from feces of human or animal sources were tested for probiotic properties such as cholesterol assimilation, bile and acid tolerances, and CLA production. Although the cultures showed some variation with respect to each test, the 12 strains could be classified into 3 groups based on their ability to assimilate cholesterol. The cholesterol assimilation showed positive correlation with bile tolerance and negative correlation with acid tolerance. The cholesterol assimilation of L. acidophilus strains may not be related to the deconjugation activity, but may in fact be attributed to its bile tolerance. CLA production by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) exhibited a wide variation that ranged from 2.69 to 7.64 mg/g fat. CLA production of Bifidobacterium longum ATCC 15707 was the highest among the LAB tested, but there was no evidence for differences in CLA production between genus and species.

  • Effect of external heating rate on the conversion efficiency for the steam reforming of methanol is investigated numerically considering both heat and mass transfer of the species in a packed bed microreactor. In a results from the numerical simulation, the conversion efficiency of methanol has been obtained for the external heating rate. The axial variation of mole fraction of methanol has been additionally presented for several cases of external heating rates. The results show that for the constant inlet temperature condition the conversion efficiency of methanol increases with external heating rate over the range of operating conditions.

  • The Remora brachyptera and R. osteochir, belonging to the family Echeneidae were collected for the first time off Jeju Island, Korea, in July and August 2013 and off Ganggu-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do in June 2014. Remora brachyptera is characterized by a sucker with 16 pairs of disc laminae and a dorsal fin that originates anterior of the origin of the anal fin. Remora osteochir is characterized by a sucker with 18 pairs of disc laminae and a sucking disc that extends beyond the posterior end of the pectoral fin. New Korean names proposed for the species are "Meo-ri-ppal-pan-i" for R. brachyptera and "Ppyeo-dae-ppal-pan-i" for R. osteochir.

  • Green fluorescent protein (GFP), a very important biological agent that involves shifting the color of bioluminescence from blue to green in luminous coelenterates and to increase the quantum yield of light emission. GFP discovered in medusa, Aequorea victoria is a key factor of various biotechnological and cell biological applications. Beside these applications, GFP of A. victoria is generally stable, which does not require co-factors for activity and can be functionally expressed in different bacterial species. This property of GFPs from A. victoria permits them to be a unique tool to monitor gene expression and protein localization in different organisms. The present review brings out the past milestones and future perspectives on GFPs, with an elaborative reviewing on its applications.

  • Pseudolepidapedon kobayashii collected from the alimentary canal of the olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, which were caught at the Chinhae Bay, was reported for the first time in Korea, and P. olivaceus was recorded as a new host for P. kobayshii. The morphological characteristics of P. kobayashii were described and compared with the other species in the genus.

  • Three fungal isolates designated as CNUFC-YR329-1, CNUFC-PTS103-1, and CNUFC-PTS2-1 were discovered during a survey of fungal diversity of the order Mortierellales from freshwater and pine tree rhizosphere soil samples in Korea. The strains were analyzed morphologically and phylogenetically based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) of ribosomal DNA gene sequences. Based on their morphology and phylogeny, the three isolates were identified as Mortierella elongata, M. horticola, and M. humilis, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, M. elongata, M. horticola, and M. humilis, belonging to an undiscovered taxon, have not been previously described in Korea.
