  • The 88 Olympic Park is a monumental urban park in Seoul, developed to commemorate South Korea's hosting of the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Initially conceived to emphasize the event slogan, 'Cultural Olympics,' which was driven by the Korean government, the park, already designed and constructed by 1986, was reconfigured into a sculpture park following two international outdoor sculpture Olympiads and an invitational sculpture exhibition. This study takes a look at the process of redesigning the park into sculpture park and the socio-political discussions surrounding such a process, in order to reconsider the significance of the 88 Seoul Olympic Park with regards to Korean landscape architectural history. Several discussions within Korean society arose during the redesign process. First, there were critiques on the artwork selection during the early phase of the project. Second, issues regarding the conservation of the national heritage site, Mongchon-tosung, located within the park, gave rise to a larger discourse on heritage preservation in Seoul. Third, discussions regarding the formation of the park identity, or lack thereof, prevalent. Through this study, the 88 Seoul Olympic Park presents itself as an example where large park construction in Seoul caused discussions regarding globalization, nationalism, publicness and art to be brought forth. This paper concludes that the 88 Seoul Olympic Park is a cultural landscape that requires further examination and exploration as it provides rich historical context for understanding the history of cultural and artistic practices in Korean urban landscapes.

  • This thesis is research about the development and application of the panorama image in contemporary artwork, focusing on sculpture and installation. The samples of artworks are a selection of representatives from numerous examples of works that cannot be introduced without exceeding a reasonable scope of the thesis. A brief outline of the historical concepts of the perspective will describe the development of the panorama in itself. Some technical explanations and the practical use of the panorama with its link to 3-dimensional applications should bridge the explanation gap between the 2nd and 3rd dimensional usage of the panorama in contemporary artwork. Furthermore, some philosophical statements are proposed in the discussion. One of the main interests and initial motivation of this study was my personal believe that there is always a relationship between social philosophical values and the way a society sees or encounters visual structures. In other words the contemporary understanding of space and perspective is mirroring the actual zeitgeist and creates an exemplary visual aesthetics.

  • A new species, Arca koumaci Lutaenko et Maestrati n. sp. (Bivalvia: Arcidae), is described from New Caledonia. The species is characterized by the small size, the convex shell with a strong posterior umbonal ridge covered by spikes, the widely curved ventral margin, and presence of cancellate sculpture and convergent marginal teeth. Presence of spikes on the posterior ridge is a unique morphological feature recorded for the first time in the genus. It is proposed that the only subgenus, namely Pliocene A. (Arcoptera) Heilprin, 1887, apart from nominative, can be recognized in the genus. Three morphological types are distinguished within the genus based on shell shape and sculpture. Bathymetric analysis shows that representatives of Arca inhabit water depths down to 175 m, and more than half of Recent species were found below 50 m. Types of A. bouvieri P. Fischer, 1874, Arca boucardi Jousseaume, 1894, Arca avellana Lamarck, 1819, and Arca retusa Lamarck, 1819 are illustrated.
