  • Filamentous fungi colonizing rice straw were collected from 11 different sites in Korea and were identified based on characterization of their morphology and molecular properties. The fungi were divided into 25 species belonging to 16 genera, including 14 ascomycetes, one zygomycete, and one basidiomycete. Fungal cellulolytic and xylanolytic enzymes were assessed through a two-step process, wherein highly active cellulase- and/or hemicellulase-producing fungi were selected in a first screening step followed by a second step to isolate the best enzyme-producer. Twenty-five fungal species were first screened for the production of total cellulase (TC), endo-${\beta}$-1,4 glucanase (EG), and endo-${\beta}$-1,4 xylanase (XYL) using solid-state fermentation with rice straw as substrate. From this screening, six species, namely, Aspergillus niger KUC5183, A. ochraceus KUC5204, A. versicolor KUC5201, Mucor circinelloides KUC6014, Trichoderma harzianum 1 KUC5182, and an unknown basidiomycete species, KUC8721, were selected. These six species were then incubated in liquid Mandels' media containing cellulose, glucose, rice straw, or xylan as the sole carbon source and the activities of six different enzymes were measured. Enzyme production was highly influenced by media conditions and in some cases significantly increased. Through this screening process, Trichoderma harzianum 1 KUC5182 was selected as the best enzyme producer. Rice straw and xylan were good carbon sources for the screening of cellulolytic and xylanolytic enzymes.

  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is now common in Thailand with an increase in incidence over time. Health authorities are planning to implement a nationwide CRC screening program using fecal immunochemical test (FIT) as a primary screening tool. This study aimed to estimate preferences and acceptance of FIT and colonoscopy, explore factors influencing the acceptance, and investigate reasons behind choosing and rejecting to screen before the program was implemented. Patients aged 50-69, visiting the primary care unit during the study period, were invited to join this study. Patients with a history of cancer or past CRC screening were excluded. Face-to-face interviews were conducted. Subjects were informed about CRC and the screening tests: FIT and colonoscopy. Then, they were asked for their opinions regarding the screening. The total number of subjects was 437 (86.7% response rate). Fifty-eight percent were females. The median age was 58 years. FIT was accepted by 74.1% of subjects compared to 55.6% for colonoscopy. The acceptance of colonoscopy was associated with perceived susceptibility to CRC and family history of cancer. No symptoms, unwilling to screen, healthy, too busy and anxious about diagnosis were reasons for refusing to screen. FIT was preferred for its simplicity and non-invasiveness compared with colonoscopy. Those rejecting FIT expressed a strong preference for colonoscopy. Subjects chose colonoscopy because of its accuracy; it was refused for the process and complications. If the screening program is implemented for the entire target population in Thailand, we estimate that 106,546 will have a positive FIT, between 8,618 and 12,749 identified with advanced adenoma and between 2,645 and 3,912 identified with CRC in the first round of the program.

  • Purpose Despite the recent increase in the use of selection tools using artificial intelligence (AI), far less is known about the effectiveness of them in recruitment and selection research. Design/methodology/approach This paper tests the impact of AI-based initial screening and interview on intentions to apply. We also examine the moderating role of individual difference (i.e., reliability on technology) in the relationship. Findings Using policy-capturing with undergraduate students at a large university in South Korea, this study showed that AI-based interview has a negative effect on intentions to apply, where AI-based initial screening has no effect. These results suggest that applicants may have a negative feeling of AI-based interview, but they may not AI-based initial screening. In other words, AI-based interview can reduce application rates, but AI-based screening not. Results also indicated that the relationship between AI-based initial screening and intentions to apply is moderated by the level of applicant's reliability on technology. Specifically, respondents with high levels of reliability are more likely than those with low levels of reliability to apply for firms using AI-based initial screening. However, the moderating role of reliability was not significant in the relationship between the AI interview and the applying intention. Employing uncertainty reduction theory, this study indicated that the relationship between AI-based selection tools and intentions to apply is dynamic, suggesting that organizations should carefully manage their AI-based selection techniques throughout the recruitment and selection process.

  • Recently, friction stir welding of dissimilar materials has become one of the biggest issues in lightweight and eco-friendly bonding technology. In this study, a lightweight torsion beam axle, which is an automobile chassis component, was used in the welding to cast aluminum material. The friction stir welding process of A357 cast aluminum and FB590 high-strength steel as well as the effects of the process parameters were investigated and optimized using a novel definitive screening design (DSD). ANOVA was used to predict the importance of the process parameters with 13 degradation experiments using the proposed DSD. Also, FSWed experiments were conducted using an optical microscope analysis to investigate the tensile strength behavior in the weld area. In addition to determining the interaction between the tool's rotational speed and the plunge speed, results indicate that the influence of the plunge depth was the most significant.

  • Coenzyme Q10(CoQ10) is a biological quinine compound that is widely found in living organisms including yeast, plants, and animals. CoQ10 has two major physiological activities:(a)mitochondrial electron-transport activity and (b )antioxidant activity. Various clinical applications are also available: Parkinson's disease, Heart disease, diabetes. Because of its various application filed, the market size of CoQ10 is continuously expanding all over the world. A Japanese company, Nisshin Pharma Inc. is the first industrial producer of CoQ10(1974). CoQ10 can be produced by fermentation and chemical synthesis. In several companies, these two methods are used for the production of CoQ10:chemical synthesis - Yungjin, Daewoong, Nishin Parma; fermentation - Kaneka, Kyowa, Yungjin, etc. Researchs in microbial production of CoQ10 have several steps: screening of producing microorganisms, strain development, fermentation process, purification process, scale-up process, plant production. Several strategies are available for the strain development : Random mutation and screening, directed metabolic engineering. For the optimization of fermentation process, various conditions (nutrient, aeration, temperature, culture type, etc.) are considered. Purification is one of the most important step because the quality of final products entirely depends on its purity. The production cost will be reduced and the quality of the CoQ10 will be impoved by continuous researches in strain development, fermentation process, purification process.

  • This paper considers the problem of determining the optimum target values of the quality characteristic of interest Y and the screening limits of a surrogate variable X which is correlated with Y under two-stage screening procedure. In the two-stage screening procedure, X is measured first to decide whether an item should be accepted, rejected or additional observations should be taken. If it is difficult to decide on the result of measured value of X, Y is then observed to classify the undecided items. Assuming that Y and X are jointly normally distributed, a model is constructed which involves selling and reduced prices, production, inspection, and penalty costs. Methods of finding the optimum process mean and the screening limits are presented. A numerical example and analysis of the results are also presented.
