Mach 6 Tests of Scramjet Engine with Boundary-Layer Bleeding and Two-Staged Injection

  • In this study, a boundary-layer bleeding and a two-staged fuel injection were applied to a scramjet engine for suppressing unstart transition and improving the thrust performance under Mach 6 flight conditions. With the boundary-layer bleeding, the engine could operate without unstart transition around at the fuel equivalence ratio of unity ($\Phi$ = 1). The thrust increment from the no fuel condition (dF) increased to 2460 N, which was about 1.4 times as large as that of the case without the bleeding and maximum in our Mach 6 tests. It was confirmed that the boundary-layer bleeding suppressed the separation during the engine operation. The two-staged fuel injection was less effective for improving the thrust performance com-pared with the single-staged one with the bleeding at Mach 6.

  • A part of the development of Scramjet Engine, this study was performed about Injectors. Barbotage injectors were used for experiment. To study characteristics of injector spray, water is supplied as a main fuel and Nitrogen is supplied for water atomization. Spray test facility and PDPA equipment were used in KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute). It was found that gas pressure change and spray distance is important value to spray atomization.

  • Liquid hydrocarbon fuels are gathering increasing attention as candidates for a scramjet engine fuel. Experimental researches on supersonic combustion of kerosene have been conducted in model scramjet combustors. Through these works, understanding of combustion characteristics of kerosene have been revealed on some level, and so we decided to work on other kinds of liquid hydrocarbon fuels in order to explore effects of fuel properties on supersonic combustion performances, especially self-ignition and flame-holding. In addition, comparing the results of new fuels with kerosene, the relationship between fuel properties and supersonic combustion characteristics was discussed.

  • Model Scramjet engine is tested with T4 free-piston shock tunnel at University of Queensland, Australia. Basically, test condition is fixed as Mach 7.6 at 31 km altitude. With this condition, variation effects of fuel equivalence ratio, cavity, cowl setting and angle of attack were investigated. In the results, supersonic combustion was observed with low and middle fuel equivalence ratio. At high equivalence ratio, thermal choking was occurred due to the intensive reaction. Cavity and W-shape cowl showed early ignition and enhanced mixing respectively.

  • Intake start characteristics of a Mach 5 scramjet engine were investigated experimentally. Intake unstart was observed. The model-facility interaction or excessive internal contraction ratio were attributed to this unstart. Intake start was achieved by changing the model position to remove the model-facility interaction, and by modifying the cowl to give smaller contraction ratio.

  • A numerical study was conducted for the investigation of thermal choking process in a model scramjet engine based on the experimental results at the Australian National University. The results of numerical simulation showed that thermal choking process could be related to the interaction between hypersonic flow and fuel-air mixing process. Especially, we could make sure that turbulent mixing was most important parameter to the thermal choking process.

  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) has been conducting research and development of the Scramjet engines and their derivative combined cycle engines as hypersonic propulsion system for space access. Its history will be introduced first, and its recent advances, focusing on the engine performance progress, will follow. Finally, future plans for a flight test of scramjet and ground test of combined cycle engine will be introduced. Two types of test facilities for testing those hypersonic engines. namely, the 'Ramjet Engine Test Facility (RJTF)' and the 'High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel (HIEST)' were designed and fabricated during 1988 through 1996. These facilities can test engines under simulated flight Mach numbers up to 8 for the former, whereas beyond 8 for the latter, respectively. Several types of hydrogen-fueled scramjet engines have been designed, fabricated and tested under flight conditions of Mach 4, 6 and 8 in the RJTF since 1996. Initial test results showed that the thrust was insufficient because of occurrence of flow separation caused by combustion in the engines. These difficulty was later eliminated by boundary-layer bleeding and staged fuel injection. Their results were compared with theory to quantify achieved engine performances. The performances with regards to combustion, net thrust are discussed. We have reached the stage where positive net thrust can be attained for all the test coditions. Results of these engine tests will be discussed. We are also intensively attempting the improvement of thrust performance at high speed condition of Mach 8 to 15 in High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel (HIEST). Critical issues for this purposemay be air/fuel mixing enhancement, and temperature control of combustion gas to avoid thermal dissociation. To overcome these issues we developed the Hypermixier engine which applies stream-wise vortices for mixing enhancement, and the M12-engines which optimizes combustor entrance temperature. Moreover, we are going to conduct the flight experiment of the Hypermixer engine by utilizing flight test infrastructure (HyShot) provided by the University of Queensland in fall of 2005 for comparison with the HIEST result. The plan of the flight experiment is also presented.

  • A high-resolution numerical study is carried out to investigate the transient process of the combustion and the shock-train developments in an ethylene-fueled direct-connect dual-mode scramjet combustor. Following the fuel injection, air-throttling is applied at the expansion part of the combustor to provide mass addition to block the flow to subsonic speed. The ignition occurs several ms later when the fuel and air are mixed sufficiently. The pressure build up by the combustion leads to the shock train formation in the isolator section that advances to the exit of the intake nozzle. Then, the air-throttling is deactivated and the exhaust process begins and the situation before the air-throttling is restored. Present simulation shows the detailed processes in the dual-mode scramjet combustor for better understanding of the operation regimes and characteristics.

  • To identify the detailed 3D flow characteristics of a model scramjet engine, a unified 3D numerical analysis was performed. The numerical domain of concern includes the entire flow path of the model scramjet engine extending from the intake to the nozzle exhaust. Turbulent models($k-{\omega}$ SST and low Reynolds number k-e with Sarkar model) were applied with comparison of experiment result. Intake side wall's effect on flow characteristics was analyzed in view points of flow quality at inlet duct and near the flame holder as well. The code is paralleled with multi-block feature using MPI(Massage Passing Interface) library to speed up the 3D calculation.

Study on Spray Visualization and Atomization Characteristics of Air-assist Type Injector for Scramjet Engine (스크램제트 엔진용 공기 보조형 인젝터의 분무 가시화 및 미립화 특성에 관한 연구)

  • As a part of the development procedures of scramjet engine with a regenerative cooling system, this experiment was performed using air-assist type injectors for scramjet engine. Two types of injectors were used in this experiment with the 90 and 60 degrees of the injection angle to the main flow. Mie-scattering was used for spray visualization and PDPA was used for the measurement of the atomization characteristics. It was found that increasing the pressure of supplied gas and the distance from nozzle tip led to the enhancement atomization characteristics and the injector with 60 degrees injection angle has better atomization characteristics than 90 degrees injector.
