  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute has been doing researches on the hypersonic propulsion system and hypersonic wind-tunnel since 2000 and started scramjet engine researches from 2005. Total 5 kinds of scramjet engine were designed and tested and two of them were hydrocarbon-fueled scramjet engine. For verifying the own characteristics of each components like the intake and combustor, several component tests were done at the KSPC of JAXA and KARI. In this paper, current scramjet engine research activities of KARI will be described.

  • This paper is investigated construction of the Scramjet test facility and test method of Scramjet engine combustor model. Scramiet engine combustor model test was performed at Lab C-16BK CIAM (Central Institute of Aviation Motors) at Tyraevo in Moscow. The velocity of flow in the combustion chamber equal to Mach number 2.49 with single hole fuel spray nozzle injector and test duration equal to 7 seconds. Therefore In this paper is showed high altitude test method of Scramjet combustor model and the proper structure of combustor with single hole fuel spray nozzle.

  • The evolution of hypersonic scramjet engines was reviewed from the 1960s to the present. Concepts of hypersonic air-breathing propulsion systems based on scramjet engine, such as combined-cycle engine, were described and compared with other high-speed propulsion systems. The development history of scramjet engines over the past 40 years odd was introduced with priority given to the efforts in the United States, and the current status of scramjet technology was reviewed through the recent development programs in several developed countries.

  • Recently, renewed interest on the scramjet engine has been demonstrated through the many international activities along the several Asia-Pacific countries. Here, a short review of current activities on supersonic combustion in a scramjet engine will be addressed followed by the discussions on the review of numerical simulation on supersonic combustion phenomena related with scramjet engine combustors and ram accelerator. Emphasis was put on the grid refinement, scheme, unsteadiness and phenomenological differences.

  • This paper describes numerical efforts to investigate combustion characteristics of HyShot scramjet combustor, where gaseous hydrogen is transversely injected into a supersonic cross flow. The corresponding altitude, angle of attack, and equivalence ratio are 35-23 km, $0^{\circ}$, and 0.426 respectively. Two-dimensional simulation reasonably predicts combustor inner pressure distribution and reveals periodic combustion characteristics of HyShot scramjet combustor. Altitude effects are also investigated and the strength of flow instability and subsonic boundary layer thickness affect the combustion efficiency according to altitudes. Frequency analyses provide the flow instability effects on the turbulent combustion in HyShot scramjet combustor.

  • Considerable achievements on scramjet technology have been performed since the end of 1950's when the improvement of performance on ramjet engine was begun. From the viewpoint of rapid and economic efficiency, scramjet propulsion system is presently regarded as the most promising one considered to be applied to the atmospheric hypersonic airplanes and ballistic weapons and even the space launch vehicles. Histories and current trends on scramjet development of USA and Russia are investigated and suggested in this paper.

  • The numerical simulations of hydrocarbon fueled scramjet engine have been studied less than them of hydrogen fueled scramjet engine. Ethylene is selected in hydrocarbon because of its good thermochemical properties and a direct-connect scramjet combustor at the American Air Force Research laboratory is taken to a two-dimensional simulation model. Ignition time delay of ethylene was monitored and air throttling was imposed to generate ignition inside the model scramjet.
