  • A plunge pool is often employed as an energy-dissipating device at the end of a spillway or a pipe culvert. A jet from spillways or pipes frequently generates a scour hole which threatens the stability of the hydraulic structure. Existing scour prediction formulas of plunge pool of spillways or pipe culverts give a wide range of scour depths, and it is, therefore, difficult to accurately predict those scour depths. In this study, a new experimental method and new scour prediction formulas under submerged circular jet for large bed materials with shallow tailwater depths were developed. A major variale, which was not used in previous scour prediction equations, was the ratio of jet size to bed material size. In this study, jet momentum acting on a bed particle and jet diffustion theory were employed to derive scour prediction formulas. Four theoretical formulas were suggested for the two regions of jet diffusion, i.e., the region of flow establishment and the region of established flow. The semi-theoretically developed scour prediction formulas showed close agreement with laboratory experiments performed on a movable bed made of large spherical particles.

  • Recent internal and external bridge failures due to pier and abutment scour have emphasized the need for better methods of scour depth estimation. This paper compares the hydraulic analysis of the Namhan River Bridge over the Namhan River using one-dimensional models. WSPRO & HEC-2, and the two-dimensional model. TABS-MD based on the procedures presented in HEC-18 published by the U.S. FEdral Highway Administration. A comparison of estimated scour depth for this research based on the results from both one-dimensional and two-dimensional model is presented. At the same time, field measurement has been performed before and after flood using sounding instrument. Fathometer (DE-719C). A comparison between estimated and measured scour depth at bridge is also presented. Result shows that there is all the difference between estimated and measured scour depth due to dissimilarity between laboratory and field conditions. Also, it is difficult to measure the maximum scour depth accurately due to refilling. Therefore development of scour measuring equipment which can be used during peak flood, and derivation of empirical model appropriate for internal river system seems urgent.

  • Case studies for real bridge sites are performed to verify the applicability of the Bridge Scour Management System in the field. The case studies for 20 bridges in Gangneung District of National Road Management consist of site investigations including the boring tests, bridge scour analyses for the design floods, bearing capacity evaluation of the bridge foundation before and after scour, and comprehensive evaluation of the bridge scour maintenance. The bridge scour management system is verified as an useful tool which can evaluate bridge scour vulnerability quantitatively, and is also proposed as a reasonable system which can help establish effective measures and secure the safety of bridges during floods.

  • Jet flow can occur by gate opening at downstream of a hydraulic structure such as weir of drainage gate. If the stream bed is not hard or the bed protection is not sufficient, vortex erosion occurs and a resulting scour hole will be formed due to the high shear stress of the jet flow. Once the scour hole is formed, a vortex occurs in ti and this vortex causes additional erosion. If this erosion continues and reaches to the hydraulic structure, it can undermine the bottom of the hydraulic structure and this will lead to failure of the structure itself. Thus, it is necessary to define the physical features of the vortex structure in the scour hole for the design of the bed protection. This study presents the turbulent vortex structure in the scour hole by the gate opening of the hydraulic structure. Characteristics of vortex motion, circulation, vortex scale and vortex were analyzed through experiments. Experimental results of the vortex velocity were compared with theoretical ones. From these, circulation and vortex scale were obtained with known values of inflow depth, inflow velocity and scale of scour hole

  • Local phenomena around bridge piers and abutments are generally considered to be similar, nevertheless the presence of the incoming boundary layer on the side wall in the abutment case generates extra pressure gradients and consequently a more complex vortex pattern. In the literature, experimental data for bridge abutments are relatively scarce; in particular almost no data are available for the time evolution of the scour. In this work we present the results of several long duration (3 days longrightarrow5weeks) clear water scour laboratory tests around bridge abutments; the time evolution of the erosion process is analysed with respect to local and global characteristic values (maxima, volume, hole shape). In particular we analyse the effect of the constriction ratio b/B between the transversal obstacle dimension and the flume width: in many practical situations abutments (or piers) obstruct a significant portion of the channel, so that the average acceleration due to constriction is expected to increase the scour effects of the local acceleration around the obstacle. Measured values for maximum scour are poorly predicted by literature formulas. Scour depths are positively correlated with the constriction ratio, but increases are smaller than expected from literature indications. Experimental results show that models for bridge piers cannot be directly applied to abutments; in particular, time scales for the latter are significantly larger than for piers.

  • In Korea more than ninety bridges are collapsed every year by flood, which causes the scour of pier foundation. Researches on the quantitative assessment method to assess the integrity of bridge against scour have not been organized systematically in the bridge design practice and maintenance area. In this study, dynamic characteristics assessment experiments are carried out as an emergency inspection method to assess the integrity of the pier foundation for scour after a flood. According to the dynamic characteristics assessment experiment, which simulates foundation scour of the spread footing pier, foundation scour can be evaluated by the first mode natural frequency of the pier.

  • According to researchers, the influential factors of scouring are generally divided into three factors: the flow conditions, the type and position of structures, and the characteristics of bed materials. In addition, scouring is affected by the 3-dimensional turbulent boundaries, the unsteady flow, the movement of sediment in the scour-hole area, the approach flow velocity and depth, the width of bridge foundation/pier, and the particle size of bed materials. However, it is difficult to estimate the scour depth near bridge piers when all conditions are factored in at once. Therefore, for reasonably accurate estimates of scour depth, it is essential to consider sufficiently the flow force and resisting force for scour. That is, to determine the shear stress concerning the bed material distribution is needed. In this study, the experiments were performed under the condition of a steady state of flow. As a result, scouring occurred at velocity ratios of 0.476,$(V/V_c=0.476)$, and the scour depth was increased linearly as the velocity ratio increased. in addition, the average values of shear stress ratio at zero scouring depth in both rectangular and circular piers were approximately 7$(\tau_c/\tau_{approach})$ and in the case for same size bed particle material. The results of this study can be used for the fundamental material for estimating the scour depth of bed materials.

  • A case study was performed to verify the applicability of existing formulae for predicting bridge scour in cases where its piers are founded in fine-grained soils. The object of study was the Kanghwa Choji Bridge area where the streambed consists of mainly clayey soil. Site investigation included: direct measurement of scour depths around piers using an ultrasonic probe; and collection of undisturbed soil samples which were later used to determine geotechnical properties and scour rate under different stream velocities. Scour depth prediction was made by employing several conventional methods and compared with the measured value. All methods, not taking soil's intrinsic property against erosion into consideration, overestimated scour depth by a factor of 3.6 to 6.5. On the other hand, the SRICOS method yielded a reasonably acceptable overestimation by a factor of 1.7.

  • This study is to propose reduction effect of scour depth and a optimum size of circular collar through experimental analyses with various collar sizes. To do so, we carried out hydraulic model experiments. In the case of with considering the collar, the effect of reduction of scour depth increased according to the increase of collar size. When size of collar is 2 as the ratio of collar diameter(W) to pier diameter(D), scour depth is decreased about 67% and deposition height is increased about 70%. The optimal size of collar proposed in this study is W/D=2 by analyzing reduction effect of scour depth, size of scour hole, and deposition height.

  • The hydrological frequency of the flood in July 2000 at Seosi stream basin in Gurye and the bed scour of the stream channel were estimated to investigate the bed scour related with Jeongjang bridge collapse. The storm over the basin in July 2000, 303mm/day was 103year frequency rainfall and the equivalent flood was 2580cms. As the results of 100year and 30year flood application, flood level 30.78~31.38m and mean velocity 3.79~4.03m/s were appeared. And the purification project of Seosi stream increased the velocity of the section near to Jeongjang bridge by the improvement of conveyance at the downstream. The local scour at pier was the major factor of bed scour at Jeongjang bridge site and the total scour at pier No.6 was increased from 2.32m to 2.45m by the purification project.
