  • This work was performed to confirm the molecular discrimination through the nrITS1 sequences among 3 taxa of Scirpus L. sensu lato (s.l.) species. S. planiculmis represented only 2 base sequence variations with S. maritimus in spite that they showed different morphological features. The nucleotide sequences of the ITS1 region from S. planiculmis were shown to have 99.1% homology with S. maritimus and 60.4% homology with S. triqueter. Although the morphology of S. planiculmis is similar with S. triqueter, molecular basis of the size and sequences on ITS1 region were shown to have distinctive differences. For divergency investigation on same sites and metapopulation, sequencing was conducted on ITS1 region with partial 5.8S and 18S regions. All plants of each species collected at the same site had identical band size pattern and sequences. Intraspecific molecular divergency was not identified in spite that these species live in different wetland sites. The ITS1 sequences described here provided a powerful genetic tool for phylogenetic studies which was difficult by morphological identification as high rate of morphological plasticity.

  • This study was conducted to establish the effective weed management methods in rice field simultaneously dominated by the herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzicola, Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides. Herbicides registered for use before transplanting, oxadiazon 12% EC, pyrazolate 36% SC, pretilachlor 14% EC and thiobencarb 50% EC were effective until 0.5 leaf stage of herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzoides. Herbicides registered for use after transplanting, fentrazamide 1% GR and mefenacet 18% SC were effective until 2 leaf stage of herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzicola and triafamone 0.98% SC was possible to control up to 4 leaf stage. HPPD inhibitors, benzobicyclon, mesotrione and tefuryltrione SC, were simultaneously effective to SU herbicide-resistant Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides. Herbicides registered for use before transplanting, benzobicyclon + oxadiargyl EC out of the tested herbicide was most effective in rice field simultaneously dominated by the herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzicola, Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides. Its effectiveness rises in proportion to flooding duration. Mazosulfuron GR, a herbicides registered for use after transplanting was most effective without phytotoxicity until 60 days after transplanting in rice field simultaneously dominated by the herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzicola.

  • The survey was carried out over an area representing about 29% of the reclaimed paddy fields of west and south seashore in Korea. Scirpus maritimus L. was heavily infested all over the reclaimed paddy fields. But the weed was scarcely found in double cropping fields cultivating barley at paddy after rice or in reclaimed paddy fields where the cultivation was taken a long time.

  • The removal rates of gross production and organic matters were investigated in the Lake Paldangho. In 1995 and 1996, soils and litter sarraples were collected and annual mean production and removal rates were calculated. Communities in the Lake Paldangho were Phragrnites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Typha aegustata and Scirpas tahernaemoutani. Removal constants of aquatic plant communities estimated by the mathematical theoretical models, were 0.826, 0.567, 0.571 and 0.751, respectively. The durations of reaching half of initial organic amounts were 0.839 yeras, 1.221 years, 1.213 years and 0.922 years respectively at the steady state of removal and accumulation for organics For organics, the rapidity of removal were more speedy P. communis, S.tahernaemontani, T. augustata, M sacehariflorus in order. The times needed for 99% removal were 6.051 years, 6.651 years, 8.752 years and 8.811 years, respectively. Key wotds:Gross production, Organic matters, Lake Paldangho, Phragmites communis, Mis-ca ethus sacchariflorus, Typha angustata, Scirpus tahernaemoutani., Removal constants.

  • Ecological study on the reclaimed high saline soil was carried out throughout a year(1969) to elucidate the changes of the structure of halophytes communiteis and the possibilities of desalination from high saline soil by absorption of chloride ion. Results from this studies are summarized as followings; 1) The growth rates of halophytes showed a variation; maximum growth rate of Salicornia appeared on August, Chenopodium on July, Suaeda on July, Aster on August and Scirpus on June. 2) Changes of frequency of each halophyte were varied in accordance with species. Chenopodium and Salicornia have the highest frequency of all on May. However, frequency as well as density of halophytes decreased after on May due to competition for absorbing moisture in plant communities. 3) The terrestrial plants which were succeed into the reclaimed tidal land had herborized 25 species on the both side of irrigation route. 4) Each of the maximum chloride uptake by halophytes appeared on May(Salicornia and Aster), on June(Chenopodium and Scirpus), and on August(Suaeda), respectirecely 5) Among the halophytes, Salicornia was confirmed to absorb the highest amount of chloride. A possible amount of chloride uptake by all halophytes per 100 square cm reached about 24,629. ppm.

  • Polysaccharides were isolated with alkaline extraction method from twelve pharmaceutical plants, which have been used against the various tumors in the oriental herb medicine, and examined for their antitumor activities. When the polysaccharides were administered i. p. at the dose of 10mg/kg/day for ten consecutive days to the male ICR mice, which had been implanted with $1{\times}10^{6}$ cells of sarcoma 180 twentyfour hours before the first injection of polysaccharides, those from Forsythia Corea, Curcuma, Zedoaria, Albizzia Julibrissin, Prunuts Persica, Foeniculum Vlugare and Daphne Pseudogenkwa showed inhibition ratios of 88.0%, 61.1%m 73.0%, 72.8% 55.1% and 71.7%. The significant prolongation of life span was observed only in the case of Forsythia Corea (18.1%). Other six polysaccharide fractions from Olibanum, Lonicera Japonica, Rheum Coreanum, Scirpus Maritimus, Gleditchia Officinalis and Brassica Juncea showed negligible inhibition ratios.

  • This study was conducted, to understand floras and circumstances of Korean swamp inland. The floras of 7 swamp inland were 32 families, 49 genus and 69 species. They are accounted for 23% with 16 species of Cyteraceae, one group of annual herbaceous plants, and 6 groups of perennial herbaceous plants (Scirpus tabernaemontani, Phramites communis, Zizania latifolia, Persicaria thunvergiicsiebold, Typha latifolia, Juncus krameri, and Juncus effusus). The plants of Scirpus tabernaemontani, Phramites communis, Zizania latifolia, Persicaria thunvergiicsiebold, Typha latifolia, Juncus krameri, and Potagometon distinctus turnes out a dominant species.

  • The purpose of this study was to create an artificial wetland in rooftop greening. We monitored species and changes of flora in wetland and rooftop greening. As shown the consideration and possibility of supplying the artificial wetland in rooftop greening through flora in wetland, this study tried to find methods to create a efficient flora space. This results are listed as belows. The species were applied to artificial wetland in rooftop greening and come up to 'General standard for selecting plants' among hydrophyte in wetlands. The plants of Potentilla kleiniana, Penthorum chinense, Scirpus radicans, Scirpus triqueter, Veronica undulata, Mentha arvensis var. piperascens, Salvia plebeian, Sagittaria aginashi, Aneilema keisak, Stachys riederi, Alisma canaliculatum, Eclipta prostrata, Sparganium stoloniferum turned out an appropriate species. This research was expected to create a various environment and component of species by introducing many types of plants in ecological wetland on rooftop greening.
