  • A new method to study water uptake into biodegradable polymer was developed. Polymer was gently mixed with the tritiated buffer and the radioactivity level of the polymer due to water uptake was measured by liquid scintillation counting. The rate of water uptake was estimated from the plot of the amount of water in the device as a function of time. The technique used in this study is particularly useful for estimating water uptake of biodegradable polymers which were difficult to study by other techniques such as weight gain used for hydrogel.

  • Here we report on the first results of sensitivity evaluation of the gadolinium-aluminum-gallium- garnet (GAGG) scintillation detector with SiPM readout to fast and slow neutrons and, to the natural background and Co-60 γ-radiation as well. Data on sensitivity were obtained using certified dosimetry benches, so it can be utilized in the calculation of detection limits of neutron flux with such type of detectors. It was concluded that use of GAGG scintillator has a good prospect for neutron monitoring in different parts of nuclear research reactors and power plants.

  • An optimized method for determining beta-emitting $^{241}Pu$ in the presence of alpha-emitting nuclides was developed using a liquid scintillation counting system. Pulse shape analysis (PSA) level was set using pulse-shape discrimination method and the $^{241}Pu$ counting channel was adjusted for maximum value of figure of merit using the 241pu standard source. The volume of scintillant was determined for the maximum value of counting efficiency. This optimized method has been applied to environmental samples to measure concentration of $^{241}Pu$ in soils and mosses. Also it has been identified the origin of Pu deposited in Korea from the activity ratio of $^{241}Pu/^{239,\;240}Pu$.

  • Since the difficulty of analysis at low concentration and the uncertainty of the removal mechanism for Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) have been reported, this study has detected extremely low concentration $^{14}$C-NDMA using the LSC(Liquid Scintillation Counter) and tested NDMA removal by Powdered Activated Carbon(PAC). The results showed the highest correlation over 99% when samples were measured with the mixture ratio of sample to scintillation liquid of 10 : 10 and at the detection time of 10 min. For $^{14}$C-NDMA removal by the PACs(S-A(Sigma-Aldrich co.) and Dj(Daejung co.)) raging from 50$\sim$10,000 mg/L, $^{14}$C-NDMA was removed over 90% by adsorption treatment. In addition, S-A showed twice greater adsorption capacity than that of Dj. However, the required PAC amount for $^{14}$C-NDMA removal was higher than that of other amine compounds.

  • In This paper, We designed the scintillation detector for measuring radiation signals in units of pixels for a radiation source that is distributed in the space. And we carried out a study to design a radiation imaging by the module for obtaining the detection signal. For measuring radiation distribution we configure a radiation detector combining CsI(Tl) scintillator and a photodiode. In addition, its performance was verified via gamma irradiation test.
