  • The importance of satellite data for numerous applications is stressed by the fact that many countries have given the development of space technologies very high priority. Among these, Korea has established a medium-term space development strategy to promote space development both on a scientific as well as commercial level. As part of this strategy, the first operational earth-observation, multi-purpose satellite(KOMPSAT-1) was launched successfully in December, 1999. The Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) on board of KOMPSAT-1 supplies panchromatic images with a spatial resolution of 6.6m Until April, 2004, it collected over 150.000 images of the Korean Peninsula and the rest of the world. This paper examines the use of remote sensing data to analyze urban growth in the city of Daejeon from 1960 to 2003. By using visual interpretation, land use maps are created.

The Study on theses of Chuna (推拿) (추나(推拿) 관련 논문에 대한 연구)

  • Objectives : To research the trend of the study related to Chuna(推拿) and to establish the direction of further studies into the Chuna(推拿). Methods : We reviewed and analyzed all theses published by Korean research institution. And these theses were classified by research institutions, published year, field of study, subject, research methods, thesis types, illness and symptoms. Results : The following results were obtained in this study. 1. Classified by the major field of study, oriental medicine accounted for 59 papers, followed by 18 in physical education and 2 in the science of nursing and medicine. 2. Upon classifying theses according to research method and thesis types, research related to clinical trial accounted for nearly half of all theses. It was followed by consideration of documents. 3. After 1998 deals with the effects of the Chuna on variable illnesses such as: ossified posterior longitudinal ligament, chronic coccyalgia, entrapment neuropathy, low birth weight infant, Bell's palsy, stress incontinence, paramenia, Parkinson disease, Bertolloti syndrom, TMJ (because of scoliosis) etc. 4. Two most widely cured illnesses using the Chuna therapy are scoliosis and HNP of L-spine. However, when considering the fact that several clinical tests and casuistics did not include research into Lumbago (including HNP of L-spine), it can be concluded that most of the Chuna therapies have been concentrated on Lumbago. Conclusion : As it can be seen in the above results, the possibility of curing illness through Chuna and the usefulness of Chuna have been shown factually and clinically through various consideration of documents, clinical trial & casuistics. Based upon such facts, it is regarded that further scientific research along with additional clinical approaches involving the Chuna should be performed.

A Scientific Consideration of Military Thought (군사사상의 학문적 고찰)

  • This article deals with military thought in general. First I tried to distinguish 'thought' from 'theory', 'philosophy', and 'principle'. Thought means the act of thinking about or considering something, an idea or opinion, or a set of ideas about a particular subject, e.g. military affairs in the present discussion. Theory means a formal statement of the rules on which a subject of study is based or of ideas which are suggested to explain a fact or event or, more generally, an opinion or explanation. Philosophy means the use of reason in understanding such things as the nature of reality and existence, the use and limits of knowledge. Principle means a basic idea or rule that explains or controls how something happens or works. Chapter 3 summarized the characteristics of military thoughts into five points', (i) it is closely related with concrete experiences of a nation; (ii) it includes philosophical and logical arguments; (iii) it relies heavily on the political thought of a nation; (iv) it includes necessarily value-judgments; (v) it contains visions of a nation which are not only descriptions or explanations of military affairs, but also evaluations and advocacies. Chapter 4 considers the relation of international political thoughts to military thought. Throughout the history of the modem states system there have been three competing traditions of thought: the Hobbesian or realist tradition, which views international politics as a state of war; the Kantian or universalist tradition, which sees at work in international politics a potential community of mankind; and the Grotian or internationalist tradition, which views international politics as taking place within an international society. Chapter 5 considers the law of war, which is a body of law concerning acceptable justifications to engage in war (jus ad bellum) and the limits to acceptable wartime conduct (jus in bello). Among other issues, modem laws of war address declarations of war, acceptance of surrender and the treatment of prisoners of war, military necessity along with distinction and proportionality, and the prohibition of certain weapons that may cause unnecessary suffering.

Bolzano and the Evolution of the Concept of Infinity (무한 개념의 진화 : Bolzano를 중심으로)

  • The concept of infinity, as with other scientific concepts, has a history of evolution. In the present work we intend to discuss the subject matter with regard to Bolzano since he is considered to be the first to accept the idea of actual infinity not just from a metaphysical perspective but from a mathematical one. Like modem platonists, Bolzano defended the infinite set itself regardless of the construction process; this is based on the principal of comprehension and unicity of denotation regarding all concepts. In addition, instead of considering as paradoxical the fact that a one-to-one correspondence existed between an infinite set and its parts, he regarded it in a positive way as a special characteristic. While the Greek era recognized the existence of only one infinity, Balzano acknowledged the existence of various types of infinity and formulated a logical definition for it. The question of infinity is a touchstone of constructive method which holds an increasingly important role in mathematics. The present study stops with just a brief reference to the subject matter and we will leave further in-depth investigation for later.

A Thought on Rationality in the Modern Age of Science (현대 과학문명에서의 합리성에 관한 한 고찰)

  • When 'rational' is understood to be 'complying with the principles of reason', we can discern two kinds of rationality---one is what may be called 'instrumentally rationality', which is involved in achieving an already fixed goal most effectively, and the other 'goal-directed' rationality, which we should have recourse to in finding out the desirable goals. The critical situations in the age of science is thought to be closely related with the fact that the 'goal-directed' rationality has been discarded as nonsensical. The goal-directed rationality was dealt a severe blow in the latter part of the last century, when the rationality of science was challenged by the scientific relativists. This paper investigates the possibility of making sense of the goal-directed rationality in the modern age of science.

  • In the study, there has been a sharp upward trend in road maintenance cost as the expansion of road networks increases. Running a pavement management system(PMS) is indispensable for efficient and scientific maintenance of the whole road networks with limited maintenance budgets. With a PMS, a maintenance plan should be drawn up after surface conditions are precisely examined and analyzed. The majority of the present PMSs are run by the fact that experts first examine surface conditions on sites, and then enter results into systems. However, considering the actual circumstances of the present time and the increase in paved road hereafter, it is inefficient that experts examine the whole paved roads in person and long-lasting PMSs can not be kept up. As a result, after analyzing the accuracy of 3-D coordinates representing road surfaces that was decided using multi orientation and digital photogrammetry, the average of standard errors turned out to be 0.0427m on the X-axis, 0.0527m on the Y-axis and 0.1539m on the Z-axis. It was found to be good enough to be put to practical use for maps drawn on scales below 1 :1000, which are being currently made and used within the country, and GIS data.

  • This study is on the characteristics of LiSangSockDanBang(理傷續斷方). Through this study, the characteristics of LiSangSockDanBang(理傷續斷方) can be oganized as the following: First of all, in LiSangSockDanBang, the treatment of traumatic injury is consisted of the fourteen steps. This fourteen steps is resorted by four steps. ; Washing(洗藥法), Standin in line(整復法), Using an external application(外治法), Using an internal medicine(內服法). This is LiSangSockDanBang's major characteristics. Because of this contents, LiSangSockDanBang is quoted on EuiBangLyuChi(醫方類聚). The first treatment of traumatic injury is Wahing. Wahing is not only sterilizing a wounded region but pushing out the PungSa(風邪). So, to avoid a infection of a tetanus, washing medicine consist of the herbs, that push out the PungSa(風邪). LiSangSockDanBang has high level of surgery. In 1456, YoungLyuGumBang(永類鈐方), has no more level than surgery's in LiSangSockDanBang, is reprinted. This fact means that the surgery is used frequently in those days. In this scientific backing, an operation needle, that described in ChiJongJiNam(治腫指南) and ChiJongBiBang(治腫秘方), are written by Lim UnGook(任彦國), is used frequently, too. In LiSangSockDanBang, the major external applications are HookLyongSan(黑龍散) and PungLyuSan(風流散). In case of open wound, the HookLyongSan is used but in closed wound, PungLyuSan is used. The internal medicine has three applications. ; Removing extravasated blood(瘀血), Catharsis(通利大小便), Supplementation(補氣血).

Architectural Implementation of the Indoor Air Quality in the Elementary School Classroom (학교건물의 실내공기환경 개선방안에 관한 건축계획적 연구)

  • Indoor air quality(IAQ) problems are not limited to large office buildings that are inadequately operated. In fact, many school buildings have significant potentials of air pollution and indoor air pollutants may be of particular concern because it is estimated that most young students who are physically weak to the pollutants spend about 90% of their time in classrooms. The goal of the study is to provide academic and architectural information on the major factors that influence indoor air quality in the elementary school. In order to gain a better understanding of IAQ problems in schools, a series of measurement studies of indoor air quality were designed and 3 different elementary school buildings located in Chuncheon were selected. The levels of CO, $CO_2$, and total volatile organic compounds(TVOCs) including formaldehyde(HCHO), major concern of this study, were measured in absence of students after class. As the results, it is noticeable that most indoor air pollution comes from sources inside the building, which are, for example, adhesives, upholstery, manufactured wood products, art and scientific supplies. The level of CO was measured similarly to that of outdoors, which means no impact on the indoor air problems since it is lower than the code. Ventilation played an important role in the level of $CO_2$ of which difference was 1.7 times in rough and 230 % of difference in the level was detected among the 3 school buildings. This concludes that indoor air problems might be result of poor building design with inadequate location of corridors within space organization or occupant activity patterns of ventilation.

Making Technique Studies of Mural Paintings in the No. 6 Tomb of Songsanri, Gongju (공주 송산리 6호분 벽화의 제작기술 고찰)

  • This study aims at identifying wall painting production technique of Songsanri No. 6 tomb based on optical examination and scientific analysis along with the investigation of written records of ancient wall paintings. The result displays that bricks with mortar were used for the construction of the wall, and masonry joint were made of lime, sand and gypsum. The surface of brick were plastered with black and thereafter with white lime. Finely sifted clay on the top of the white surface, were applied not with plasterer's trowel but with a brush for making ground surface. The clay are mineral particles smaller than $30{\mu}m$ of silt. The wall paintings of Sonsanri No. 6 is the only example of making ground layer with clay for painting of Sasindo (literally four heavenly animals painting) among remaining wall paintings of ancient tombs. The historical value of the painting should be attributed not only in terms that it displays a rare production techniques which were never discovered in any other paintings in Korea and Asia, but also it might had been uncompleted when the tomb were closed, even though it considers the fact that the wall painting were discovered in damaged condition in 1933.

  • What is 'fusion'\ulcorner And how should we accept it, which has been appeared before us with an irresistible force in the 21 century through the whole area of scientific branches\ulcorner And does it mean a mere physical 'mixture' or a chemical 'compound' among the fused parties\ulcorner And is it an impartial fusion among the parties or a partial Fusion absorbed by the stronger party\ulcorner We cannot give a right answer without full comprehension of the meaning and process of Fusion. In this respect, 1 would like to touch upon many of these matters on Fusion and stir a attention to the fact that our life quality must not be damaged by the sudden appearance of Fusion in this era. In the future, there will be a bigger Fusion in so many a field than now between the advanced and the underdeveloped countries of the world. Nevertheless, it doesn't always follow that Fusion gives us the best way of arriving to happy lives. There are still too many undesirable things in it. And then, I conclude that it is through the multidisciplinary research and its systematic analyses that we can solve many negative problems on Fusion.
