Damage assessment of structures - an US air force office of scientific research structural mechanics perspective

  • This paper presents the perspective of the Structural Mechanics program of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) on the damage assessment of structures for the period 2006-2009 when the author was serving as Program Manager at AFOSR. It is found that damage assessment of structures plays a very important role in assuring the safety and operational readiness of US Air Force fleet. The current fleet has many aging aircraft, which poses a considerable challenge for the operators and maintainers. The nondestructive evaluation technology is rather mature and able to detect damage with considerable reliability during the periodic maintenance inspections. The emerging structural health monitoring methodology has great potential, because it will use on-board damage detection sensors and systems, will be able to offer on-demand structural health bulletins. Considerable fundamental and applied research is still needed to enable the development, implementation, and dissemination of structural health monitoring technology.

치유효과와 관련한 근거중심설계에 관한 방법론적 고찰 (A Methodological Consideration on the Evidence-Based Design related to Health Effects)

  • The aim of this study is to review the literature addressed the methodology to measure and evaluate the health outcomes as evidences for health benefits through the study on the healing environment, garden, therapeutic garden and viewing landscape and so forth. The research methods and measures used to assess health effects in the reviewed studies have applied in a different way ranged from quantitative methods (physical measures or quantitative observations) to qualitative methods (qualitative observations and surveys). In a literature review of research articles on the health outcomes have been found various research methods and measures used to assess health effects. This study will be concentrated mainly on methodological considerations in order to find the significant evidences related to evidence-based design (EBD). Future research should build the body of methodological knowledge to find more empirical evidences as sound scientific data and to improve the effectiveness of design interventions.

  • The article focuses on the areas of education activities in using techniques for teaching and learning with information and communication technologies (ICTs), researching and analyzing the available ICTs, gearing the technologies to the specific psychological and pedagogical conditions, independently building and modeling ICTs, enlarging and developing their use in the learning environment. The visualization of scientific research has been determined to be part of the educational support for building students' ICT competence during teaching and learning and is essential to the methodology culture. There have been specified main tasks for pedagogy technologies (PTs) to develop the skills of adaptability to the global digital space in students, their effective database operation and using the data bases as necessary elements for learning and as part of professional training for research. We provided rationalization for implementing the latest ICTs into the Ukrainian universities' curricula, as well as creating modern methods for using the technologies in the learning / teaching process and scientific activities.

교과과정 개발을 위한 기초로서의 개발연구에 대한 고찰 (Reflections on Developmental Research as a Research Methodology)

  • 본 연구는 수학교육의 연구 방법론에 대한 많은 변화와 더불어 교과과정 개발의 과학적 접근에 대한 필요성이 증대되는 수학교육 연구 경향에 비추어, RME의 개발연구를 고찰함으로써, 우리나라의 좀더 발전적인 수학 교과과정 개발을 위한 시사점을 제시하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위하여 RME 개발연구의 배경과 이론적 틀, 개발연구의 목표, 절차, 자료수집, 자료분석, 정당화 과정을 포함한 개발연구의 방법론에 대해 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 우리나라의 수학 교과과정 개발의 개선을 위해 수학교육의 이론과 실제를 반영한 교육과정 문서의 구성, 교과과정 개발 배경에 대한 충실한 보고, 교과과정 개발 절차 개정의 필요성을 논하였다.

Q 방법론을 사용한 유아교사의 과학교육에 대한 불안 탐색 (Exploring Science Education Anxiety Among Early Childhood Teachers Using Q-Methodology)

  • Objective: This study aimed to explore early childhood educators' anxiety regarding science education via Q-methodology. Methods: As the first step, 268 Q samples were collected from resources such as books and research papers related to science education for young children. Through five stages of excluding and modifying, a set of 33 Q statements was finalized. The P sample consisted of 40 early childhood educators and was based on educational levels, years of teaching experiences and types of centers. The collected data were analyzed using QUANL statistical program. Results: The results of this study indicate that science anxiety among early childhood educators are classified into four types, explaining 45.13% of the total variance. Conclusion: We conclude that early childhood educators' science anxiety stems from "preparing educational environment and materials," "instructional methods focused on process and scientific inquiry skills," "lack of understanding regarding early childhood science education," and "simple science avoidance."

  • Conducting polymers have been attracting considerable attention from both scientific and industrial perspectives by virtue of the beneficial electrical and optical properties originating from their unique ${\pi}-conjugated$ system. Many efforts have been devoted toward fabricating conducting polymer nanomaterials. Of the various synthetic methodologies, soft template method has emerged as a very promising tool in fabricating conducting polymer nanomaterials. For last a few years, our research group has intensively studied the fabrication and application of conducting polymer nanomaterials. In this talk, the recent achievement in the synthetic methodology based on the use of soft templates will be discussed.

포스트 케인지언 경제학의 전개과정과 대안 경제학으로서의 가능성 (Perspectives on the Post Keynesian Economics and their Possibilities as Alternative Economic Theory)

  • 본 연구는 포스트 케인지언 경제학의 전개과정과 대안 경제학으로서의 가능성을 살펴본다. 비주류 경제학 중에서도 비주류 경제학이라고 칭해지는 포스트 케인지언 경제학은 현재 대안적 거시경제학으로서의 가능성을 어느 정도 인정받으며 외국에서는 비교적 활발한 논의가 되고 있다. 한국에서도 그간 여러 선행 연구가 있었지만, 여전히 학파에 대한 일반적인 소개가 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본 연구의 일차적 과제는 포스트 케인지언 경제학의 전개과정을 통해 학파의 현황을 소개하는 것이다. 이를 통해 비주류경제학인 포스트 케인지언 경제학이 대안 경제학으로 자리매김할지를 라카토슈의 '과학적 연구프로그램 방법론(methodology of scientific research programmes)'을 이용해서 확인하는 것이 본 연구의 이차적 과제이다. 연구의 순서는 다음과 같다. 먼저 포스트 케인지언 경제학의 전개과정을 살펴보고 포스트 케인지언 경제학의 특징을 주류경제학과 비교해서 분석한다. 이를 통해 포스트 케인지언 경제학과 주류경제학의 경계를 긋는다. 다음으로 라카토슈의 연구프로그램 방법론을 이용하여 포스트 케인지언 경제학의 연구프로그램으로의 완결성을 가름해 본다. 마지막으로 포스트 케인지언 경제학의 한계 및 앞으로의 과제를 제시한다.

소셜 컴퓨팅 연구동향 분석 - 블로그와 소셜 네트워크 서비스를 중심으로 - (A Review of Research on Social Computing: Focused on Blogs and Social Network Services)

  • 본 연구는 소셜 컴퓨팅에 대한 기존의 연구동향을 분석하고, 향후 연구방향을 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 2006년부터 최근까지 사회분야 학술지에 게재된 51편의 논문을 대상으로 연구주제 및 세부주제, 연구방법, 분석단위, 응용분야 측면에서 분석하였다. 분석결과, 소셜 컴퓨팅 분야에 대한 국내 연구의 몇 가지 경향이 발견되었다. 연구주제 측면에서는 조직 개념을 다룬 연구보다 사회 개념을 다룬 연구가 많았다. 조직 개념 분야의 연구에서는 기술 이전에 대한 연구가 많았으며, 사회 개념 분야의 연구에서는 문화적 이슈에 대한 연구가 많이 수행되었다. 연구방법으로는 현장 연구를, 분석단위로는 개인을 분석단위로 하는 연구가 지배적이었다. 응용분야 측면에서는 블로그에 대한 연구가 주를 이루고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 향후 소셜 컴퓨팅 연구의 발전을 위해서는 연구의 다양화가 요구된다.

계량서지학적 분석과 키워드 기반의 메타 분석을 통한 수산경영학 관련연구의 분석 (A Bibliometric Analysis and Keyword-based Meta-Analysis of Fisheries Management Research)

  • The improvement and richness of research in a particular domain are fundamentally based on their own various research topics and scientific or systematic research methodology. Especially considering fisheries business administration as a branch of business administration, the interdisciplinary concept will be a important factor in the research of fisheries business administration. This study analyzes fisheries business administration research through bibliometric analysis and meta-analysis to examine meta-data including research trends, researcher characteristics, and keywords. The 225 source articles are all papers published from 1990 to 2006 in the Journal of Fisheries Business Administration Society of Korea. Comparing previous research from the 80s, the major areas of Korean fisheries business administration research have changed and the rate of co-researched papers has also increased. In keyword-based meta-analysis, the topics of recent research are well balanced and diversified but some structural and editorial problems still remain. The result from meta-data and bibliometric information gathered in this study will help create guidelines for carrying out further rigorous research and enhancing the quality of research in fisheries business administration.

Optimization, Purification, and Characterization of Haloalkaline Serine Protease from a Haloalkaliphilic Archaeon Natrialba hulunbeirensis Strain WNHS14

  • The present study addresses isolation, optimization, partial purification, and characterization of a haloalkaline serine protease from a newly isolated haloarchaeal strain isolated from Wadi El Natrun in Egypt. We expected that a two-step sequential statistical approach (one variable at a time, followed by response surface methodology) might maximize the production of the haloalkaline serine protease. The enzyme was partially purified using Hiprep 16/60 sephacryl S-100 HR gel filtration column. Molecular identification revealed the newly isolated haloarchaeon to be Natrialba hulunbeirensis strain WNHS14. Among several tested physicochemical determinants, casamino acids, KCl, and NaCl showed the most significant effects on enzyme production as determined from results of the One-Variable-At-A-time (OVAT) study. The BoxBehnken design localized the optimal levels of the three key determinants; casamino acids, KCl, and NaCl to be 0.5% (w/v), 0.02% (w/v), and 15% (w/v), respectively, obtaining 62.9 U/ml as the maximal amount of protease produced after treatment at 40℃, and pH 9 for 9 days with 6-fold enhancement in yield. The enzyme was partially purified after size exclusion chromatography with specific activity, purification fold, and yield of 1282.63 U/mg, 8.9, and 23%, respectively. The enzyme showed its maximal activity at pH, temperature, and NaCl concentration optima of 10, 75℃, and 2 M, respectively. Phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF, 5 mM) completely inhibited enzyme activity.
